Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH/ALIAS SMITH & JONES
Pairing: Starsky/Hutch
Length: approx 22,000 words

Why this must be read: I love Alias Smith and Jones, so to read a Dawnwind story crossing over with them is such a treat. She does an excellent job of giving a plausible story in spite of the two totally different programmes. Really a fun story.

There's an earthquake in Bay City. Starsky is knocked unconscious and when he wakes, he's being tended by none other than Heyes and Curry... in the old west of Bay City. Starsky remembers who he is but everybody else is 100 years in the past, including a fascinating man by the name of Kennet.

Note: Since the story wasn't rated by the author, I've chosen PG.

A little teaser:

Starsky pushed against the ground, and managed to rise up on his forearms. In the deepening twilight, he saw a blurry forest of horses' legs, restless hooves flashing sharp metal shoes, and scuttled back to avoid being stepped on by one thousand pounds of animal. Where had they come from?

Someone swung down from the saddle, but Starsky still wasn't focusing well.

"Hey, mister, you need some help?" This was a third voice, not as deep as the second, and far closer to the ground than the others. Must be the guy who dismounted.

"Guess I hit my head," Starsky mumbled, turning slowly to see his rescuer without jarring his already sizable headache. A young man was crouched next to him, close enough that Starsky could see his smooth cheeks in the darkness. A cowboy hat hid most of the rest of his face. The man looked vaguely familiar, but Starsky couldn't place him.

Why this must be read: I'm a sucker for episode-related fic. In this tag to "The Fifth Victim" Heyes is cold, still recovering from his injuries and Curry is comforting him by curling up with him and telling him a story. Heyes certainly finds the story stimulating. So did I.. This is just marvelous, naughty and extremely hot. It certainly warmed Heyes right up.

Why this must be read: Today is the 38th anniversary of Pete Duel's death and I wanted to mark this sad occasion with a few final recs. This first one is written in the style of a series of letters from Heyes to Curry. I really enjoyed this short piece and especially the final post script by the Kid. Read this one with a cup of your favorite warm beverage and a cookie (or biscuit). Enjoy!

Sincerely, Hannibal Heyes

Why this must be read: A short but oh-so delightful scene set entirely in a hotel room. I don't want to give too much away, but here's the set-up: Heyes comes back early from a job surprising Kid in the night. It's a tiny nugget of pure reading pleasure.

Why this must be read: I adore this piece set immediately following "The McCreedy Bust" as the boys leave town without the $20,000 they'd won from the devious landowner. Heyes is stewing in guilt and Kid is trying to get him to snap out of it when they reach the next town. This is another fine character piece with dialog you can hear when you're reading it. I just love this story to bits, especially the ending. Fills me with warm and fuzzies.

Why this vid kicks ass:  Such a perfect song for the characters and the show. Nicely edited with a slew of terrific clips of our outlaw duo. For fans of the show, the video will evoke a schload of memories. For those of you who've never seen the show, after watching this you'll understand why it's still a cult favorite - a lot of the reasons having to do with adorable dimples, tight pants and gorgeous smiles.

Why this must be read: All is not what it seems when Curry abandons an injured Heyes and makes off with $2,500. Heyes tracks Curry down and demands answers - and the answers he gets are not at all what he expected. This is a nicely put together tale that rolls right along and holds your interest until the very last word. She captures Curry's "voice" particularly well, I feel. There's plenty of angst in this story, good conversation and a happy ending. And that is a good deal.

Why this must be read: Heyes and Curry are exhausted, holed up in some small town ruminating over the events that brought them to this particular town and whether or not they'll get their amnesty over a friendly glass of whiskey while Heyes attempts to read a dime novel he found in their room. Just the kind of scene we'd see in the show. It's filled with warmth, friendly banter and the camaraderie that made the chemistry between the two former outlaws so memorable. Honestly, this could be a missing scene from an episode, it's just that good.

Why this must be read: This is an established relationship story with plenty of hurt/comfort, angst with an added dash of discipline in the form of a well-delivered spanking. Corijea's well-written story has a nice set-up and strong character moments. Her interpretation of Kid Curry is especially strong; making, for me, the story all that more believable. If the discipline aspect squicks you out, I can assure you that when it's all said and done this tale is about the love and respect that these two men have for one another.

Why this must be read: Ah where to begin? This is such a marvelous look at the partnership between Heyes and Curry. It's a quiet, complative piece where the boys are spending some time camped out alone while Curry recovers from an injury and deeper emotions rise to the surface. I love how the story unfolds, how she gets into Heyes' head and it all feels so right. It's so vividly told that I felt like I was watching it instead of reading it. It's just that good.

Why this must be read:

When I first proposed submitting "Alias Smith and Jones" for small fandom month here on [livejournal.com profile] crack_van , I asked the folks over at [livejournal.com profile] aliassmithjones for their favorite stories and authors. Tenaya was the author who was the most suggested and for good reason. She's a terrific storyteller with a fluid writing style and her characterization of the boys is spot on. In "The Point of No Return" Curry has just joined up with the Devil's Hole Gang after he recognizes Heyes as a kid he knew back in Kansas. Heyes has just recently taken up leadership of the gang after Jim Santana got caught and sent to prison and is cementing his position with the gang. Curry has a plan, however, to earn his place not only in the gang but at Heyes' side... and his bunk.

Why this must be read: I had a difficult time choosing which of the fabulous stories that are out there to start with, but I figured I should start with one that I've read more than once and one that has never ever failed to make me smile. It's a tag to the end of "The Girl in Boxcar #3" starting right as the girl leaves on the train leaving Heyes and Curry at the train station and we follow the boys to their hotel. The dialog feels just right and I can hear their voices in my head when I read it. Heck, I can see Curry smile as he says the last line of this delightful piece. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
