13th-Feb-2013 04:54 pm Easy With Daemons In by newredshoes (PG-13)
Fandom: Band of Brothers
Pairing: Gen
Length: 9,348
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: spoilers for the series
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] newredshoes
Author's Website: newredshoes on AO3
Summary: How would having your soul on the outside change how we look at war?

Why this must be read: Newredshoes put together an inspiring collection of shorts based off the concept of showing how war really affects people's souls. Each piece is for a different character, so there's no guarantee you'll like them all, but I thought each character was portrayed realistically and with quite a lot of thought and effort put into their characterization. I'm a huge Winters/Nixon fan, and though the series stays gen, I found there to be enough subtext to satisfy shippers of all types.

Each story in this series in titled with character, place, & date so you have a good sense going into it exactly how everything fits together. This is vital because it lends a sense of order to an otherwise random collection of shorts, which can actually be read in basically any order you choose. Read separately, each fic is a fantastic character study, but when taken together the stories end up forming a view of how much war stresses and changes people--which fits in perfectly with both daemons and with the overall plotline in canon.

Easy With Daemons In on AO3 & on LJ

Note: Because this is a series of shorts, newredshoes lists this as a WIP. I have to disagree. Because each fic is independant of the others, you could easily only read one (or as many as you like) without reading all of them. There's no singular plot running through them, so knowledge of canon is all you need.

30th-Mar-2012 10:52 pm VID REC: GENERATION KILL (Band of Brothers Crossover) - Super Trailer
Vidder: hippowithnoodles444
Musical artist: Massive Attack, Craig Armstrong, Sigur Rós
Pairing: None
Vidder on LJ: Unknown
Vidder's website: hippowithnoodles444 on youtube
Why this vid kicks ass:

It's an HBO war miniseries mash-up of awesome! Band of Brothers is the fandom most analogous to Generation Kill - a fictionalized account of real military guys who didn't ask to be written about, etc - and the vidder here seamlessly moves between 1944 and 2003, between the Army and the Marines, between two vastly different wars, showing us how war has changed. And how it really hasn't. A fantastic take on the bonds of brotherhood, then and now.

Fandom: BAND OF BROTHERS
Pairing: Lewis Nixon-centric, with Winters/Nixon
Length: 2,749
Author on LJ: [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]

Why this must be read:

This piece is amazing, there's a lot of romance-in-Bastogne-foxholes type stories in fandom but this one definitely stands out from the rest. Nixon's characterization, the dialogue, I love everything about this piece and wholeheartedly recommend it.

He stumbles into the nearest foxhole, not at all surprised to find Dick there. "Hey," Nixon says, voice thick with cold. "You all right?"

"Yeah," Dick replies, huddling under his sorry excuse for a blanket. "Long day, huh?"

"Something like that. Christ, Dick, gimme some of that – I thought I signed up for
Europe, not the goddamned tundra."

Dick's lips twitch, the closest to a smile Nixon can get out of him these days, and lifts the edge of the blanket enough for Nixon to scoot in beside him. It doesn't actually make him any warmer, but what the hell.

He closes his eyes and the lines of the map are still there, imprinted behind his eyelids. He dreams of endless planes of cartography, X marking the spot of God knows what, and it doesn't matter because Nixon knows he'll never reach it.

Why this must be read:

Because this author has Speirs down so well, with his quite detachment from the rest of the characters while keeping a sense that he does actually care about his fellow soldiers. There's a mystery to Ronald Speirs throughout the miniseries, and I liked that the author kept that mystery alive here.

Fandom: BAND OF BROTHERS

Length: 5,028
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] eudaimon

Why this must be read:

Because [livejournal.com profile] eudaimon writes such a great characterization of Joe Liebgott, and this piece will just break your heart with its portrayal of picking up the pieces and life after the war. This author knows her characters and the intimacy of some of the scenes with Webster and the Liebgott family really touched me, creating a poignant piece that everyone should read.

Why this must be read:

Because Band of Brothers has approximately 2.3 women in the entire miniseries and yet this author somehow manages to bring these very minor background characters together and create this wonderful piece about the various women who knew the men of Easy Company.

When they came for her, she held her head high.

Fandom: BAND OF BROTHERS
Pairing: Winters/Nixon
Length: 2,016
Author on LJ: [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]
Author Website: 'fanfiction' tag
Why this must be read:

I love the dream-like quality that the author has created for this piece, how Dick is ever slowly falling for Nix but he can't see it for what it really is as its happening. Meredith is subtle in her storytelling, she knows her characters and the way that she brings Winters and Nixon together in this piece is truly breathtaking.

He wonders why he remembers this-- something so calm, so trivial. Wonders why, in the chilled, narled claws of a Bastogne foxhole, he looks down at Nixon sleeping slouched against him and thinks about a baby-faced boy kicking his feet, squirming and scribbling mocking rhymes in illicit pen. He brushes a finger against Lewis' cheek, too numb to feel texture; those dark eyes open, recognizing, sleepy and so briefly full of trust, as if the years haven't yet caught up with Nixon's dreaming.
Someone says, "Go back to sleep." Someone else presses lips to a chilled forehead, breathing easing back into the peril of dreams.

Title: Appropriate Responses by CrimsonQuills
Pairing: Gen; Ronald Speirs, Carwood Lipton
Length: 1,295
Author on LJ: [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]
Author Website: CrimsonQuills.com
Why this must be read:

The premise is so very cracky, yet the thought of Speirs as a Terminator from the future is just too perfect a scenario to pass up. I'll admit these are not two fandoms that automatically scream out 'crossover', but the author does a great job bringing these very different canons together.

In all his months of training and battle with Dog Company, no one had ever noticed anything out of the ordinary. Speirs had never even had to lie. The subject simply never came up. The complete success of his efforts at passing must have made him complacent, thrown off his calculations, because Lipton notices right after Foy.

Why this must be read:

Six months after the end of the war Joe Liebgott is woken up by a phone call in the middle of the night and is drawn back to someone that he's tried so hard to forget. Why this must be read:

Because the author has Doc Roe's voice nailed down, with the cold and heartbreak that should accompany any Bastogne related story. There's hardly any het in this fandom, so you could imagine my happiness when I stumbled upon this piece. [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] has done such a great job with these two, the world needs more Renée!fic and this piece definitely sets the bar high on that account.

And it’s here where he starts to think back to her, finally – he thinks it’s sorta that thing, you see a pretty girl and you know, you know you can’t help yourself even though there’s a something waitin’ tight and ready for him at home. It’s the hands definitely and he’s glancing down at his own, rewritin’ the sorta thing he might go and say to her.

“Renée,” he mumbles.

But he likes the way
she says his name, that fancy French and none of that Cajun shit that he loves and learns. He feels his mouth start right on movin’, the slur of her name lost again to the shelter of his hands

Gotta be that he’s too far away from anything now and the loneliness is startin’ to eat way at him, thin between the trees and the occasional duck and fire from the fuckin’ Germans that like to leave him with a couple bodies or two, if he’s lucky.

They’re gonna need morphine soon.

Fandom: BAND OF BROTHERS
Pairing: Winters/Nixon
Length: 3,100
Author on LJ: [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]
Author Website: 'fic' tag
Why this must be read:

Because the author manages to capture all the tiny details of Bastogne, and the beauty of the intimate relationship between Nixon and Winters in this piece never fails to make me smile. This is a character driven story that all fans of the mini-series will enjoy.

When he does sleep, he sleeps lightly -- they all do, really. Can't afford not to, not with the way the Germans are walking right through their lines like they're not even there. He tries not to think about it. He tries not to think about a lot of things these days. Nixon jostles awake the second he hears someone approaching his foxhole. The footsteps are too quiet, too careful to be anyone but Dick. That doesn't stop him from reaching for his rifle when he sits up.

"You alive in there?" Dick asks, hovering at the lip of the hole and pulling the tarp back to peer inside. Nixon glares at him before a yawn starts to split his jaw in two. "You've been asleep for a while."

"Sure doesn't feel like it."

Dick doesn't say anything. He stares at Nixon in that way, like if he looks at Nix's nose and lips and eyebrows long enough he'll be able to tell if he's lost his mind yet. He probably could, is the thing. They'd all be able to, just from looking. Nixon watches the snow stick to Dick's helmet, flexes his fingers and tries to return feeling to his hands while he waits out Dick's stare. After a minute he blinks, satisfied, and reaches out like he's going to touch Nixon's cheek but he hesitates, brushes the frozen dirt out of Nixon's hair instead.

Dick claps his hand on Nixon's head and stands up. "I have to go meet with Lieutenant Dike," he says. "He wants to talk about the way his men are sleeping three to a foxhole. It seems he doesn't approve."

Nixon shakes his head, rolls his eyes and says, "Yeah, good luck with that." Dick half-smiles at him; Nixon's smile turns into another yawn and then Dick's gone, disappearing into the the forest like he never existed in the first place.

Length: 4,959

Why this must be read:

I love this story's transitions from the past to the present and how the author keeps a some-what tragic feeling to her writing. Post-war Band of Brothers fiction somehow seem to hit me the hardest, and this piece is no different. Watching as the boys have reconcile who they were during the war, while having to pick up the pieces of their respective lives back home; Webster finishing his degree and Liebgott reaching out years after they last spoke. They're both broken in their own ways, and [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]'s stark depiction of them in this piece makes it a must-read for any reader.

Last rec of the month! It's been fun, guys. I'm sorry there weren't more BoB recs -- life kinda ate me, and I didn't have time to post as much as I should've. But I hope you've enjoyed the fics here!

Why this must be read: Speirs remains an enigma for the entirety of the series -- ruthless, fearless, and extraordinarily proficient as both soldier and leader. 24th-Nov-2009 11:33 pm This Book Is Not About Heroes by Ishmael Tonight (R)
Fandom: BAND OF BROTHERS
Pairing: Winters/Nixon
Length: one-shot
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] ishmael_tonight
Author Website: unknown
Why this must be read: Nixon finally takes Winters to Chicago, but that's really not the point at all. Told in fragments of internal monologues, this short fic packs a real punch. It gives us an unsentimental glimpse of Nixon after the war, how he's just barely keeping himself together, which rings very true; the moments of grace with Winters are all the more poignant in contrast. Train-of-thought is a hard style to pull off, but Ishmael nails it.

Home: is where the heart is, is where the name on town hall matches your own. Dick sits across the table from you, reading the paper and drinking coffee. He does this, sometimes, after the wives and girlfriends pack their things and leave, after the bad nights (and how he always knows, well, is something you're not looking into too deeply). You always offer him (more) eggs, or pancakes, or, hell, a hamburger or filet mignon or escar-fucking-gots; he always smiles that smile and says, “just coffee's fine, I ate at home.”

Home, according to Richard Winters: a place to call one's own. An honest day's work for an honest day's pay; a homecooked meal, and friends with whom to share it. You read the sports page; Dick is engrossed in current events.

Why this must be read: Albert Blithe has never been a fandom favorite, but this fic will make you wonder why on earth not. He's young and lost and not a warrior, but so very, very human and familiar. This fic will make you ache for Blithe, for everything he was and wasn't and could have been, and maybe there's a bit of you in Blithe and his impossible situation. A straightforward and beautiful character study.

“You’re too damn smart for your own damn good sometimes,” she says, “but you can’t just go thinking yourself through a war, Albert. You can’t just jump out of a plane and hope it’ll make you something you’re not. You’ve got to fight and get your hands dirty and claw your way through other men. Are you prepared to do that?” When she looks at you, her cheeks are wet and her eyes are dark and red, the makeup around them smudged and running in dirty streaks down her face. She grips you firmly at the shoulders, shaking you hard as she forces the words out between her teeth. “Because I am your mother, Albert, and I know that you haven’t got it in you.”

Why this must be read: Because sometimes you just need some damn good romance to counteract all the angst in this fandom. Title: Free Until They Cut Me Down by newredshoes
Pairing: ensemble gen
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] newredshoes
Author Website: newredfic
Why this must be read: This sprawling, beautiful Big Bang fic is a prime example of what a crossover should be. After a series of uncanny attacks, Private Dean Winchester, a new replacement joining Easy Company after Normandy, discovers that he may not have left his own war back on the home front after all. Newredshoes blends the two canons perfectly -- Dean is very recognizably himself, and flashbacks to his life leading up to the war show the choices that led him from hunting demons to joining the Airborne, and the consequences. The men of Easy Company are just as well drawn, particularly Babe, Winters, and Luz; the plot is intricate, tight, and rich in mythology. This fic works even if you're only familiar with one of the fandoms, so whether you're a fan of BoB, SPN, or just a damn good mystery, you should read this right now.

Fandom: BAND OF BROTHERS
Pairing: Winters/Nixon
Length: oneshot
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] apiphile
Author Website: Fic index on LJ
Why this must be read: In a fandom that is quite understandably full of angst, apiphile's fics are thoroughly refreshing -- quick, clever, and very, very funny. Lest we forget, Lewis Nixon is an alcoholic, and this author captures his sardonic sense of humor perfectly in rambling interior monologues, without losing the darker edges of his character. This ficlet has two sequels (rated PG-13), which follow Nix as he tries to figure out what exactly he did in Paris and why Winters is so damn disappointed in him. Light, fun, and unabashedly shippy.

When Lewis "What Do You Mean I Drank All The Scotch, There Was A Fucking Crate Of It" Nixon woke he was a little surprised to find himself back in familiar barracks. He'd been certain he was going back to Aldbourne, and he wasn't quite sure which day it was or whether he'd been. There was a troublesome gap in his memory that could have been one evening or a week, and his head felt like a whole company had used it for doing jumping jacks on.

Why this must be read: Written in the familiar style of 50 prompts, one sentence per prompt, except the prompts really don't matter here. The author does a fantastic job of summing up everything heartbreaking and wonderful about the show, and the non-linear, fractured storytelling imposed by the style perfectly captures the splintering chaos of warfare. Just beautiful.

Bravery can be realized in the strangest of moments, almost as though by accident – the unfurling of a parachute, the endless rat-a-tat-tat from a machine gunner, the snap of a branch in the pale shadows of the moonlight, the exploding shell from behind, the sight of blood, the slip of it, the taste, the blood, yes, the blood, the –

Fandom: BAND OF BROTHERS
Pairing: Winters/Nixon
Length: one-shot

Author Website: unknown
Why this must be read: From the original Berlin by Christmas treasure trove, this one follows Nixon through the chaos of D-Day, everything we didn't see him get up to in "Day of Days" before he showed up on that tank. It's spare and quick, with a restrained lyricism. Great Nixon portrayal, with bonus Perconte and just a light touch of implied Winters/Nixon.

As they crawl up the embankment towards the road, Nixon starts to think about all the different ways a paratrooper could die in France.

"Do you know where we are, sir?"

"As a matter of fact, I do," he says. "That's what I'm good for."

Why this must be read: if you watched emo!Winters alone in Paris, you know who was missing in it. This fic make everything right.

Paris was a beautiful, lively city, but he found it overpowering and didn’t know quite what to think of it all, or what to do with himself. [...] French was such a beautiful language, and it didn’t really matter that he couldn’t understand anything. It had a very different cadence from English; its words sounded so much more melodic and graceful. And it brought back Nix’s D-Day briefing, and the way the Normandy town names had rolled elegantly off his tongue. The memory sent a pang through him, and he suddenly, selfishly, wished Nix were there. They could have explored the city together, and Nix could have shown him his favorite places. But Nix wasn’t there. He was on his way back to Aldbourne, to someone else, and he carefully diverted his thoughts away from that fact, and the painful void it left in his stomach.

Last rec of the month, anything but least. It's been a privilege guys, I hope you enjoyed the ride as much as I did.

Homecoming is probably the most ambitious project in this fandom, certainly it is one of the best executed concepts in any fandom.

Picking up after the war ends, Homecoming traces the journeys of the men who left as boys and came back to interrupted lives only to learn that not all broken things can be mended. Read it because it's beautiful, intricate, funny and heartbreaking. Read it because it understands that epics are truly constructed out of the smallest of moments.

Why this must be read:

This is what the fic gods intended when they spawned the Five Things format. A series of AU's exploring a broad and wonderful spectrum of what ifs. What I love most about it is that they're the same men and yet they are not, that the varying butterfly effects depicted here are allowed to make subtle, delicate changes to such well established personalities. I am in endless awe of writers that can pull something like this off so well.

And also, it's hot.

Winters looks up at him, pale hard eyes softened, a face he has never seen smile smiling, and Lewis Nixon runs.
