Why this must be read: In the grand tradition of leaving the best for last, I present to you one of the most loved stories in the fandom. I’ve been reccing a lot by [livejournal.com profile] alinewrites , and there’s a good reason for it: if you want hot and angsty, you can’t do better. This story, known when a WIP only as “The Spanish AU” is presented here as it appeared in our fanzine, Fquie #4, as a fully developed novella. It is a true AU, where Thomas Doughtie is born a Spaniard, Tomas Valiente. Purporting to be an actual historical record, it is full of delightful details, including supposedly “found” correspondence between Drake and Valiente. Ironically, positioning Drake and Valiente as enemies on the political spectrum does nothing but improve their relationship, and although there is much, much angst on the road to happiness, this tale has one of the most satisfying endings in all of DV fiction. As always, Aline’s writing is rich and full of sensuous detail, as in this passage from the episode titled, “Solace,” which just happens to be one of the hottest scenes I’ve ever read:

Length: ~1200 words

Why this must be read: Another story that touches on the legend of Francis Drake, this time the story that he was a wizard who sold his soul to the devil to gain the power to control the winds. Odsbodkins recasts the story of Drake and Doughtie as an old sea tale, leaving us with a sense of mystery and wonder at the end.

Why this must be read: Thomas and Francis, together again and again in a series of vignettes, linked by an image, cloaked in a sense of mystery and inescapable destiny. This prose-poem by Blakefancier takes the genre of reincarnation fic and both expands and contracts it to a logical conclusion. It’s all the rain’s fault.

What Thomas remembers most was that he tasted like rain.

Why this must be read: I really wanted to rec “Humpback” with “A Brief Corruption,” by [livejournal.com profile] alinewrites , but I couldn’t stretch the rules of the comm to include it…after all, they aren’t by the same author, aren’t in the same series – hell, they aren’t about the same thing at all. But this story was written in response to Aline’s fic, and I think you’ll agree that it’s the perfect companion piece, setting the qualities of the first story into relief by contrast – dreamy, mystical and hopeful where “A Brief Corruption” is brutal, lusty and bitter. Also, this is one of the most unusual reincarnations for our boyz that I’ve ever read…

He sang of the past, the present and the future, all at once. Ocean and sky and land. Flying and swimming and running. Love and trust, betrayal and hate, forgiveness and guilt. It all blended into his voice, deep and eternal, pushing out into the endless waves, seeking.

Length: ~1900

Why this must be read:  Want a double dose of angst, violence and raw, primal sex?  The reincarnation AU is a staple of this fandom. Given their tragic canon, we just can’t resist the chance to give Thom and Fran a do-over.  Usually, we lead our boyz to a happie ending...but in this fic by Alinewrites, nothing has changed for our heroes.  All the old conflicts of desire, class and temperament lead to a bitter resolution.   At least this time Thomas survives!

Only when they were very close to the whale did Tom start to worry. He knew the danger; a whale would never attack them, pacific animals as they were, but it could be annoyed by their presence. It was swimming very close to the surface – a single brush of the wooden hull against her skin and it would send them flying with a single movement of its powerful tail. He turned, wanting to warn Cisco – and froze. What had been hidden before under thick tarps – the sharp harpoons, the chains, the fixed block - and the merciless expression on the sailor’s face, his sardonic grin – Tom saw it all, and the other boats around as well that had joined them, equally armed and ready, with the men aboard, their gazes fixed on the still quiet whale.

A Brief Corruption

But stick around for the next rec…Humpback by [livejournal.com profile] entropy_house , a story written in response to this one…

Fandom: DRAKE’S VENTURE
Pairing: Thomas/Leonard
Length: ~2600
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] nautile26
Author Website: None
Why this must be read:

Drake’s Venture is the story of a relationship going down in flames. “Stories about a ship on a boat,”[livejournal.com profile] dv_ficarchive  proclaims; our essay for [livejournal.com profile] ship_manifesto  entitled “One Terminal Pairing.”  So is it any wonder that 90% of the fanfic ships Thomas/Francis? But Nautile26 is one of the rare authors who loves to lavish attention on the minor characters, a meticulous attention to detail and a poignant exploration of emotion establishing her as the master in this area of the fandom. In this story, set before the events of the movie, we see Thomas and his friend Leonard Vicarye as young law students at the Inner Temple.

[The PG rating is, BTW, conservative. There’s a boycrush and a boykiss – that’s about all.]

15th-Oct-2008 06:10 pm Drake’s Venture/The Sweeney (NC-17)
Title by Author: Playing Games by Alinewrites
Pairing: Thomas/Francis
Length: 4 part series
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] alinewrites
Author Website: Index of Aline’s DV fic on LJ
Why this must be read: There have been plenty of DV crossover stories, but the most tempting targets are Blakes 7 (playing on Paul Darrow’s role as Avon) or The Sweeney (with John Thaw as D.I.Jack Regan). This is my personal favorite. Our hero is D.I. Frank Drake, substituting one John Thaw role for another – but the story is set in the Sweeneyverse, including other Sweeney favorites like George Carter. In the story, Drake goes undercover to solve a series of bdsm murders – a hot premise if I ever heard one – and he enlists the help of an old lover – who else – Thomas Doughty.

“We’ll go undercover. I’ll take so many precautions that even you will think you’re someone else.”

Untying the knots around Doughty’s wrists he added lightly, “Of course if you’re too scared…”

“Emotional blackmail doesn’t work,” Doughty said, wiping himself up with his ruined shirt before going to a closet, pulling out clean ironed clothes. He took his time dressing up. Clean shirt, new tie, a suit as sophisticated and well cut as the first one. “You want to use me as bait.”

“No,” Frank said. “Cross my heart; I wouldn’t risk you.”

“They’ll ask you to display your skills as a top,” he said. “I’ll be expected to play your sub. I know how they work.”

I can’t ask him that, Frank thought. Not after what I did to him before. Then he remembered the photographs and hardened himself. “Three men died; who will be the fourth, do you think?”

Why this must be read: A tiny story, more of a poem than a story, really. The images, economical and bladed, cut to the heart – and end on a note of surprising hopefulness.

Thomas closed his eyes and heard the beating of the drum. It reminded him of his heartbeat and then it was his heartbeat and he could taste it in his mouth.

It tasted of autumn apples: crisp and tart and firm.

Why this must be read: Written for the [livejournal.com profile] dv_squee  Requestathon on the prompt “Thomas is Persephone, Francis is Hades,” everyone immediately guessed that the author was [livejournal.com profile] alinewrites due to the stunningly gorgeous sensory detail (and the blue cloak!) This fic is a true AR – you don’t have to be familiar with Drake’s Venture to understand it. Take it as pure myth, if you like.

Tapping his fingers lightly against the thick wood of the conjugal bed, Persephonos watched as the darkness was progressively dispelled, pushed away into the furthest corners of the room. There were no torches, no lamps but the walls and the ceiling seemed to glow softly, more and more with every second, bathing the room in a quiet soft light not unlike the delicious brightness of a late summer afternoon on Earth. Near the bed was a basket of fresh fruits and scented herbs – every night a servant changed them as well as the flowers in the bowls. Closing his eyes again Persephonos revelled in the scent of mint, thyme and blooming roses. In crystal goblets, gems and diamonds cast coloured sparkles that seemed to dance on the walls like butterflies.

Aidoneos does this for me, he thought with a touch of pride and some amusement. The dark fearful God of the Dead goes to such lengths for me only.

Why this must be read: For a fandom as tragic as Drake’s Venture, there is a surprising amount of over-the-top crackfic. This hilarious short by Odsbodkins gives us an entirely new perspective on Drake’s circumnavigation – through the eyes – uh, masts? – of the Pelican, soon to be renamed Golden Hinde.

Day 23

Doughtie is back and Drake has gone away. Trying to 'command'. No-one commands me except Francis Motherf**king Drake. I'd sink just to spite him, if it wasn't for the indignity of becoming a coral reef.

Why this must be read: You may be familiar with the legend of Drake’s Drum: whenever England is in danger, Drake’s drum will sound and the old mariner will return to defend his country. This story is set during the Dunkirk evacuation of 1940, the last time that the drum was heard. I love the sense of history and lore in this story – furthermore, it’s poignant with its sense of Drake as a hero, something rare in DV fics.

He ran the Mary as close to the beach as he dared, feeling incredibly conspicuous. Bombs blasted the water all around him- dead fish floated on the surface, amid chunks of debris from other, unlucky vessels. The bigger ships waited offshore for him and the others like him, to ferry men. Lines of lifeboats from the destroyers filled the water. In places you could have walked from one to another for hundreds of yards without touching water.

"HERE!" He bellowed, waving his arms. "Here!" He grinned as the first lifeboats touched Mary, and men began climbing aboard. Young men, the future of Britain. God, so young, and so tired, and so damn beautiful, all of them. They crammed in shoulder to shoulder, the last ones being pulled aboard even as Mary backed water.

Character: Thomas Doughtie
Length: ~1000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] nautile26

Why this must be read: Religion is a tough subject to handle in fanfiction. Yet in DV, the religious beliefs of the characters are integral to who they are. Nautile’s beautiful story addresses the subject of faith in extremity, the story of Thomas Doughtie’s last night:

He had spent the day of July 1 attending to his worldly affairs. His family, his friends, his servants, they would all be well provided for. Now there only remained the night. His last night. A night so long and desperate that it would test his faith and his resolve. The winter sun had set by 4 o'clock and would not rise until 8 on July 2. Sixteen hours of darkness and doubt. Hours when the icy fingers of despair could emerge from the dark corners of his mind and torment him with morbid imaginings. Hours in which he must prepare for the end of his life.

Fandom: Drake's venture
Pairing: Thomas/Francis (reincarnation fic)
Author's lj: [livejournal.com profile] shimere277
Author's website: index of fics

Why this must be read: It's long and gorgeous. It's an AU, a reincarnation fic where Thomas and Francis are climbers - daring brave ones. Climbing the highest moutain of Himalaya, without oxygen don't scare them. They don't scare Frank because he's prepared, and quite experienced, and conscious of the risks - a professional. They don't scare Thomas because, like it is often the case in Shimere's fics, he doesn't give a fuck about dying, since he seems to be quite disturbed. But still very brave. It's a wonderful fic (get a coat and boots, it's so well written and vivid you'll think you're there). So they climb, it doesn't go that well, they nearly die, they yell at each other, and finally... Well, let's say they're still alive at the end.

All you need is in this fic: a beautiful writing, a plot, sexual tension... so, read The fatal impact (the link to part two is at the end of part one. You would have guessed. You just have to click on it with your frozen little fingers.) When you're done, go read all her fics. You won't regret it.

Fandom: Drake's venture
Pairing: Thomas/Francis
Author's lj: blakefancier
Author's website: none that I know of

Why this *must* be read: Blakefancier has a rare gift: she can pack in a very short fic all the emotions and ambiguities it takes me pages to convey. This is why, although short, this fic is just perfect. It's a reincarnation fic, a high-school fic and our heroes are in bed; but it's not quite as simple as that.

Fandom: Drake's venture
Pairing: Thomas/Francis
Author on lj: [livejournal.com profile] shimere277
Author's website: Index of Shimere's fics

Why this *must* be read: Among all the -mostly false- accusations against Doughtie, the one of being a sorcerer, able to conjure storms is one of the most surprising ones. What if he really *had* this power? It's the premise of the fic. Luckily Doughtie has not been executed, only whipped (probably). Now comes the moment when Drake's small fleet has to face the terrible tempests of the Magellan Straights.

It's a very hot fic, and very clever. And you'll find an originality: it's rare enough that such a hot fic leaves one of the characters unsatisfied! The sex is quite... passionate.

I can't beging to tell you how I felt after reading this. Maybe like I had been punched in the guts, hard? "S'en mordre les doigts" is a French expression that means that you regret something - too late. This is exactly what Doughtie experiences here. Poor Thomas!

Why this must be read: This is a canon angsty fic. No last-minute change of mind - Thomas is going to die and this story tells you why, and who were the men who conspired, more or less consciously, to kill him - or sent him to his death. The motivations are clearly exposed, the characters are true to themselves, Thomas Dougthie's presence pervades the whole fic - and he's not even here. The situation is seen from four different POV.

You'll know everything here, and especially that SM here is not a joke. No safe words. That being said, the fic describes the meeting of one dom and his sub (guess who's who?) and their recognition. Title: He lays in the reins
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] shimere277
Author's website: index of Shimere's fics is here

Why this must be read: Because it's excellent, and much more than simple standing At first sight it's an AU, a reincarnation fic where our heroes live in opposite camps during America's civil war, although it's not quite, IMO, South against North; the conflict between the men is more subtle - is there even a conflict? Doughtie sounds so disillusioned in this fic, and much too open-minded and tolerant to take sides. Their meeting is full of angst and longing. The fic is historically perfectly accurate, and plotty, full of details that make it a real great reading one of those stories you can read ten times and still discover something new (I especially like the last part and Thomas' thoughts at the end). Fanfic at its best.

It is moderately slashy - sex is not what matters here. Note the presence of Thomas Dougthie's young brother John who plays a very important part here.

Why this must be read: The author is a classical writer in B7 where she works wonders. Same in DV. This fic is both hot, cruel and our heroes are portrayed in their flawed glory and their humanity (or lack of when it comes to Drake). The style is excellent and the story full of surprises, until the end. It's one of my classical "Squie Puppie" fic because Thomas Doughtie is brilliantly himself, and you'll feel sorry for him.

It's also a fic where Doughtie, obviously, does not die (PJS) and where the two men find - maybe - an acceptable modus vivendi. Or not.
