Why this must be read: This story is like the fandom hattrick that will win my heart forever, MFU+NCIS+S&S=PURE WIN!!! In my own personal world of the imagination, Ducky is really Illya in Witness Protection, and [livejournal.com profile] hearts_blood takes this idea another step further and does it in a wholly beautiful and lovely way. Honestly, if I say more I will give it away. This story is full of (surprises) sweet caring moments and humour and grumpy!Illya and worried!Napoleon and is beautiful and lovely and needs to be read if you are at all a fan of MFU, NCIS and/or S&S. Her little world in this story explains so much and is worth a visit.

31st-Jan-2010 10:49 pm False Heart by Susan M. Garrett [PG-13]
It's time to pull Nick's Caddy back into the garage. The sun's coming up.

Sorry for the last minute deluge of fic recs. The frequent stops to stuff several vampires into the Caddy's trunk was not pleasant for anybody involved. Plus, Schanke kept insisting on regular souvlaki stops, Janette was annoyed with our mode of transportation, Nick turned interesting shades of green from Natalie's veggie shakes, Tracy was annoyed at the month long Nightcrawler monologues from LaCroix, and Vachon bailed on us a while back because in his opinion that we never went anywhere interesting. Everyone's a critic.

Why this must be read: A collection of Forever Knight fanfic recommendations would not be complete without what is perhaps the best received series in the fandom. Their author is the Queen of Forever Knight fanfiction with good reason. Her writings are the best if you want entrance into the world of Forever Knight. When Dorian, the vampire archivist, comes to Toronto looking to interview Nick, every character involved is affected. Janette remembers the traumatizing brutality of Dorian's attempted interview of LaCroix and her own, Natalie finds herself caught in the middle of Nick and Dorian's power struggle, and Nick finds himself at odds with the vampire law Dorian represents and his own transgressions.  This series is not to be missed.

Pairing: Nick/Nat
Length:  15,957 words each
Author on LJ: n/a
Author Website: Ophelia5's Forever Knight story page
Why this must be read: This is an interesting one. It certainly involves odd subject matter (bondage=Nick/Nat intimacy) but it works really well and its a fantastic and sexy read. At the heart of the lack of intimate relations between Nick and Natalie is the simple fact that the vampire in Nick could choose that vulnerable moment to feed and kill Natalie. With Natalie being a resourceful woman, she introduces the idea of using bondage chains to help control Nick's feeding instinct, so that the two of them can introduce physical intimacy into their relationship. This is the first in a series of six stories dealing with the repercussions of their acts, especially once LaCroix becomes privy to their activities.

Author Website: website, fic journal and archived
Why this must be read: Nowadays everyone knows USA Network as the home to quirky, character driven dramedies, "Characters Welcome!" their motto cheerfully proclaims. Yeah, not so much in the mid 1990s. Fans saved Forever Knight from cancellation but in return they had to contend with a few "changes" mandated from the high up highs. In turn fans redirected their frustration about new character and content into fiction. In this example of Forever Knight breaks the fourth wall, a pragmatic Jim Parriott, the show's creator, has a one on one conversation with Nick about the new changes in store for the show.

Why this must be read: Exploring the Nick and LaCroix dynamic never gets old. Over the course of 800 year those two have had a volatile relationship. Violence was not an uncommon occurrence. On the flip side, it was LaCroix who expanded Nick's world by encouraging the younger man's artistic pursuits. Their relationship was one of contradictions and in this story, two pivotal events in the show's history, one at the beginning and one at the end, force the characters to reflect on the loss of the other.

Why this must be read: This is an exhilarating post-series finale story. It's got it all: Internal Affairs and the Dawkins shooting, the Enforcers, Commissioner Vetter wanting justice for Tracy, Captain Reese being crafty, and that's not including the situation with Nick, LaCroix, and Natalie. It takes the world of Forever Knight and the concepts it created and expands them. It's a fascinating read all around. The vampiric repercussions from Nick and Natalie's actions at the end of "Last Knight" raises the stakes for everybody and takes them into brand new terroritory. The story was to be the first in a trilogy. Sadly the other two parts were to my knowledge never posted but it's nevertheless a satisfying read.

Fandom: FOREVER KNIGHT
Pairing: gen
Length: 7226 words
Author on LJ: n/a
Author Website: Lurker Site
Why this must be read: Straight out comedic Forever Knight fics are a rare bird. What's so fantastic and entertaining about this fic is how regular show conventions are twisted to create a wacky 'Weekly News of the Warped' feature story by a pair of boozing tabloid journalists on a sugar high. Empty wine bottles in Nick's garbage? He must be a vampire! Natalie eats in the morgue? How gross! She must be an alien! The original characters of reporters Kennedy and Chandler are a real treat and their back story and shenanigans are as enjoyable as their increasingly convoluted attempts to draft a story worthy of the tabloid name. Writing duo The Lurkers even use their story to offer a clever reasoning for the cast change leading into season three. This story is not to be missed.

Length: 3101words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] brightknightie
Author Website: Bright Knight: Amy's FK Fiction
Why this must be read: Natalie as a vampire is an interesting genre in Forever Knight fanfiction. With it comes the potential to explore scenarios with Nick and Natalie as a couple, Natalie as a member of Nick's vampire family--namely LaCroix's role, and the complications of the heart that arise when immortality causes lovers to grow in and out of love. With this story, Amy R. asks the question: What kind of existence would a vampiric Natalie have if she was forced to face eternity alone without Nick, knowing that she can't follow him back to mortality. It has a melancholic mood and the scenario is one I haven't seen explored by another author. Be on the look out for a fantastic ironic twist in that the one thing that made it possible for a mortal Natalie to be allowed into Nick's vampire world as a spectator, is the one thing that traps her in that world forever. And the ending...chilling.

Why this must be read: This story could effortlessly slip into season 1 canon and it offers some fantastic interaction between Janette and Natalie. The tension between the two is not one of danger but of two women slowly discovering fascinating elements about each other and themselves. In the series their common link was Nick and their love of him but by the story's end, the two ladies quickly realize that they could genuinely be friends.

Why this must be read: Tracy Vetter had the unenviable task of replacing Don Schanke as Nick's partner in the third and final season. That was her professional role. Personally, her quasi romantic relationship with the transient vampire Vachon left Tracy emotionally affected, despite the their obvious differences. This fic explores Tracy's state of mind in the days after Vachon's "departure" and her coping methods that are uniquely Tracy. It's a short, heartbreaking and effective songfic

Length: 18,150 words
Author on LJ: n/a
Author Website: Klytaimnestra's Site
Why this must be read: For me there's something very intriguing about Natalie/LaCroix. These two should never be together but the idea of them together appeals to a twisted part of the brain. I love the idea of those two characters butting heads but I never quite crossed the line into thinking of the two of them engaging in anything other than a meeting of the minds. However because Klytaimnestra's writing is so engaging I decided to give this story a try. I liked it. It's interesting. Set just prior to the series finale, LaCroix is still reeling from his recent personal loss and Natalie has come to some conclusions regarding her relationship with Nick and his commitment to his current incarnation. It just goes to show that competent, engaging writers can make unusual scenarios work.

Why this must be read: One of the pleasures of Forever Knight fanfiction is how creatively the authors will expand on topics and characters  that were only lightly touched upon on in the series. All it takes is one appearance and they are forever cemented into the FK universe. The story of Nick Knight's mortal sister, Fleur, is no exception. The potency of this story lies in its short length. It's fleeting and over before you know it, just like Nick's chance encounter with Kate Heightmeyer, who is the spitting image of his baby sister. The painful loss of Nick's mortal family almost 800 years prior is a private memory. He guards it from everyone, even from those closest to him. Seeing Kate, happy, vibrant and youthful is enough for Nick to open himself up and share his memories with Natalie. That's the gift of Kate Heightmeyer to Nick Knight and she didn't even know it.

Why this must be read: I adore this story. Actually, I adore anything that Eve writes but this one in particular is special. I have my NNPacker tendencies but I'm especially drawn to the friendship between them. With that being said, season one does occasionally dabble with the romantic feelings Nick and Natalie have, and that's where this story, set in the aftermath of "Only the Lonely", resides. In it, Nick mulls over the nature of his relationship with Natalie, how its evolved, and the obstacles a romantic relationship would create.

Why this must be read: This fic is a personal favorite. There's a quiet simplicity to it. There are no great big revelations or disasters. Just a simple conversation between a husband and wife in the early minutes of the dawn. Told through the POV of Myra Schanke, it deftly hits upon how those unfamiliar with Nick's vampiric state would view his "eccentricities". What Myra deducts is a picture of Nick that isn't entirely off the mark and it helps her appreciate the blessings she has in her own life.

Why this must be read: Fic by this author really needs no introduction. Pick any Forever Knight story by her and you're bound to pick a winner. I find this particular story appealing because of the wonderful way Susan builds on the world of show by fleshing out characters that only talked about but never seen. In this case, it's Jenny Schanke, the young daughter of Nick's partner. Through her Nick begins to get an idea of how he has unintentionally weaved his way into the lives of a lot of people.

Why this must be read: This is another post finale story, only this one looks at the lives of the characters after the passage of a substantial amount of time. Fifteen years to be exact. In the eyes of the world Natalie has moved on--to a different continent, to a new life, to a new man--or has she? An invitation to Jenny Schanke's baby shower brings her back to Toronto and its ghosts for one last time. This story does a lovely job of etching the curiousity that surrounds Natalie and in creating a wonderful presence in Myra Schanke.

Why this must be read: Femslash is not something that strongly figures in Forever Knight fandom, but that doesn't mean the potenial isn't there, as this story aptly demonstrates. Throughout the run of the series Janette and Natalie had very few scenes together. It's one the show's greatest tragedies. Knightshade uses the events and the Natalie and Janette interaction from "A More Permanent Hell" to weave a sexy and plausible scenario that keeps both characters true to themselves. Janette controls the situation with her usual grace and Natalie never lets go of the curiousity that is so much a part of her.

Why this must be read: When I first re-entered the fandom I consumed all the fic I could get my hands on. Stories that take place after the series finale are very popular but as satisfying as they were, I found myself looking for a certain type of post-Last Knight story.  I was itching for something that looked at "Last Knight" within the context of what very likely happened. As devastating as the finale was, I wanted it addressed. In the wake of the finale's events, characters were left behind, namely Captain Reese, as well as the one time or supporting characters that were never revisited like Natalie's family or Grace Balthezar. How did they deal with the mystery of it all? Dorothy's "All the Rest is Silence" trilogy could not have been more perfect. Tragic, fitting, and heart breaking.

Why this must be read: Stories by this author have an edge that is so inviting to me. "Trio" is one of many, many stories the fandom has that uses the series finale as a new beginning for the characters, in this case LaCroix, Nick and Natalie. All the old character boundaries have been wiped away and in its place is a new reality, free from restrictions. This story is evocative and very hot, but I also appreciate the characterization of LaCroix. He's not the unflinching, overbearing father figure often presented in the series, but a vampire who misses the companionship of his beloved son.

Length: 7550 words

Why this must be read: A Forever Knight episode has a fairly simple setup: Nick and Schanke (or Nick and Tracy) investigate a homicide, while something pertaining to the case causes Nick to reflect on a similar incident or theme from his 800 year history. This story could be eased in quite smoothly into season 2 canon, especially where the interaction between Nick, Schanke and Natalie are concerned. The reader gets a very entertaining story involving a young witness' infatuation with Nick and a flashback to Nick's first love when he was young and mortal. How can you resist a story with teenage!Nick? There aren't a lot of stories that can claim an appearance by young Nick and this one delivers in spades.

Why this vid kicks ass: I just can't get enough of this video. It's Janette-centric but one of the things I love about it  is the decision to focus on the relationship between Janette and LaCroix. The vidder uses some extremely striking clips of Janette and LaCroix both together and individually.

Yet I think when you get into an exploration of Janette and LaCroix' s relationship, you can't really look at it without looking at the impact that Nick's introduction to their relationship has had. The creation of a son pretty much displaced Janette as the favored "child" and now sets her in the role of someone who is used as a means to control the reluctant third.  There are several great and very isolating shots of Janette observing the countless power struggles between Nick and LaCroix. Every time I see the video I find something new to love about it. It's that good.

Why this must be read: It sounds fairly silly on the surface: Nick teaches LaCroix to drive on his precious Duesenberg while Janette tags along. Then, hilarity ensues. This story is set immediately after the flashback from 'Father's Day' and further builds on the claustrophobia Nick feels with his "family". It's a wonderful read that showcases the dynamic between our favorite vampirc trio and come on, Nick, LaCroix and Janette all looked breathtakingly beautiful in their 1920s garb, so all that is icing on the cake when it comes to visualizing this story.

Length: 5188 words

Author Website: Eve's "Forever Knight" Fan Fiction
Why this must be read: The Nick and LaCroix dynamic on Forever Knight is one of the series' most interesting and intriguing relationships. Many a fanfic have been written about these two, whether it be a look at the father/son dynamic, the antagonis/hero, or the teacher/pupil, to name just a few. What makes this LaCroix POV story so appealing is that it fills in the blanks of Nick, Janette and LaCroix's travels through the centuries. It depicts instances in their history in which Nick and LaCroix weren't entirely antagonistic but enjoyed and grew from each others company. It also paints a wonderful portrait of Nick, the person, and why his character is so appealing. Shades of Nick's romantic relationships over the years are also touched upon, with special care given to the show's two main female characters. Nick and Janette are two young vampires in love who bring out the best in each other and Nick and Natalie are a headstrong and idealistic pair. A fair warning: the story references events from the series finale and offers a scenario on how those events played out years later.

Why this must be read: I adore stories that take place before the series premiere, particularly those that deal with the Nick and Natalie dynamic. In this story, author Kathy Whelton peels back the layers to Nick and Natalie's "rocky" first encounters and explores the characters' insecurities and hopes. We are treated to a Nick who wields the persona of a cold, emotionless vampire to protect himself from false promises and a Natalie who tries to balance her desire to rise up to a scientific challenge with her inherent curiosity. The story setup is simple but it packs an emotional punch. Nick and Nat's very proper and detached early forays into finding a cure to Nick's vampirism get derailed by a medical emergency. Pre-series stories are all special and unique but this one stands out as wonderful introduction to the genre.

Why this must be read: Set during the first season, I couldn't think of another story more fitting to get Forever Knight on crackvan rolling. It has a little bit of just about everything: a homicide investigation, Natalie's work on Nick's "condition", a Myra story and even the insinuation that Nick is going into flashback mode. The main focus here is the Nick and Schanke partnership. It is a large and significant aspect of the show and Amy R. does a wonderful job of weaving in small touches that regular viewers of the show would pick up on. At the same time, those touches serve as a good introduction for anyone looking to explore the world of FK fanfiction. Forever Knight is sometimes summerized as the "Vampire Cop" show and Amy R's decision to tell this story through a Schanke POV doesn't ignore the vampire element of the show. Instead, she subtely references it as it would appear to Schanke, who is not privy to that information about Nick.
