It’s time for Crack Van Collisions!! This one's a real treat:

Title: Intelligent Designs by Auburn
Fandoms: White Collar, Chuck, Fringe
Pairing: Author notes none, but I’d call it Neal Caffrey/Bryce Larkin
Length: 117k
Author on AO3: auburn
Author Website: Auburn’s works on AO3
Why this must be read:

This fic is an epic merging of three fandoms so diverse I wouldn’t have thought it possible in a hundred years – in fact, when my pal [livejournal.com profile] winterstar95 recommended it to me I initially resisted it, citing the fact it couldn’t possibly work – yet it does! And very, very well.

The author’s premise is an amazingly imaginative one, particularly for fans of the actor Matt Bomer, who portrays Neal Caffrey on White Collarand Bryce Larkin on Chuck : imagine all of the characters Bomer has ever played (Neal, Bryce, Luc from Tru Calling, Jay Burchell from Traveler, and more) are all clones based on the same “stock,” an experiment overseen by Fringe’s Walter Bishop many years ago to produce super soldiers, and one that has failed mightily. Imagine also that rogue scientist David Robert Jones knows about the Intersect from Chuck and wants to use it to find the tech that made those clones. Imagine again that Bryce Larkin never died on Chuck, and he’s out to stop Jones at all costs. Now mash it all together. The result is part adventure/casefic, part horror show, part family relationship story, and 100% excellent.

The thing that resonates the most for me with this story – besides the sheer talent it took to write it – is the relationship between Neal and Bryce. They are brothers and yet not; they know each other with an intimacy only two beings raised within a hive-like cooperative can; and they are utterly devoted to each other in ways so touching and inspiring it will make your chest hurt. Theirs is a connection and love that almost defies description, really, and fascinates me to this day, over a year since I read the story.

Now, let me assuage the fears of any reader who might be intimidated by the fact they may not be familiar with one or two of these shows: the author takes pains to orient you in the narrative of each of them – you will not be lost. I guarantee, in fact, that you will be swept away. This is a work of genius.

For my final Fringe rec this month I bring you a fic in the spirit of one of the upcoming holidays.

Fandoms: FRINGE
Characters/Pairings: Astrid Farnsworth, Walter Bishop, Peter Bishop, Olivia Dunham
Length: 2047 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] wasabi_girl1
Author Website: on Ao3
Why this must be read:

This is a holiday fic that manages to be just a nice level of sweet without becoming too fluffly, mostly because the holiday theme and cheer is offset by a background tension between Peter/Olivia from mid-S3 events. It has touching moments between Astrid and Walter, Walter and Peter and also the not often seen interaction of Astrid and Olivia that lend a roundness to this, making it feel like a true teamfic even though it isn't case related in this instance as you'd usually expect teamfic to be.

29th-Nov-2013 01:19 pm Vid Rec: Fringe - Hysteria
Vidder: lastonthelist
Musical Artist: "Hysteria" by Muse
Length: 3:45
Vidder on LJ: unknown
Vidder's Website: on Youtube
Why this must be viewed:

I am biased when it comes to the features of this vid - I love Muse and I obviously love Fringe too, with the featured Season 3 that is the focus of this also being my favourite Fringe season too. Ultimately this vid feels like an action packed trailer for the season, the energy of the song fitting so well for the wonderful madness of everything the season packed into it. The lyrics too are very appropriate for the themes of the season - change, control, faith - and it feels like an emotional rollercoaster of a vid.

P.S. In case anyone is sensitive to it, there are many very fast cuts in this vid.

Characters/Pairings: Ella Blake, Peter Bishop/Olivia Dunham
Length: 1050 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] petit_filous22

Why this must be read:

A sweet little fic that manages to have Peter being cute with Ella as its mainstay but is also nicely implies Olivia/Peter and revealing a little of how his childhood with Walter was too.

28th-Nov-2013 07:47 pm "You Were Once A Friend And Father, Then My World Was Shattered" by tellshannon815 (PG)
Fandoms: FRINGE
Characters/Pairings: Chris Broyles, Alternate!Phillip Broyles
Length: 745 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] tellshannon815
Author Website: on Ao3
Why this must be read:

Alt!Broyles' storylines effectively shut off in 4x18 - we never see or hear of the aftermath of those events related to him, but here in this fic we get his son Chris' perspective on all that happened and a nice nod as well to the idea non-Fringe Division people might have an inkling of how the timelines have changed.

26th-Nov-2013 07:20 pm "My Love Has Concrete Feet (The Discordant Symphony Remix)" by waketosleep (Mature)
Fandoms: FRINGE
Characters/Pairings: Peter Bishop/Olivia Dunham, Peter Bishop/Lincoln Lee
Length: 1417 words
Author on DW: waketosleep
Author Website: on Ao3
Why this must be read:

Peter hasn't always been one of the good guys, which can be easy to forget in most fic/canon situations. This fic gets an interesting look into how he views himself in relation to his past, in both the long and short term, as well as a nice diversion into a short lived 'it's complicated' with him discovering that despite his devotion to 'his' Olivia, he can have feelings/attraction to others like Lincoln too.

Fandoms: FRINGE
Characters/Pairings: Alternate Olivia Dunham, Alternate Lincoln Lee
Length: ~1700 words
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: on FanFiction.net
Why this must be read:

A post 4x17 fic for Alt!Olivia that shows her trying to come to terms with events. What I like here is how her feelings are related to her personal history that isn't often brought up on the show (and wasn't in episode 4x18 that this is essentially set during), as well as it making room for showing the differences of her world, not just after what happened with them in 4x17 but also of red/altverse in general.

Fandoms: FRINGE
Characters/Pairings: Olivia Dunham/Peter Bishop
Length: 1423 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] syd15
Author Website: unknown
Why this must be read:

Because it feels like this fic, concise as it is, really gets to the points of why, and how, Olivia was hurt by certain S3 events. It takes apart the trust between Olivia and Peter, examining it as it does, seeing how it was before and what went wrong without placing blame. It also focuses on how Olivia feels about it all, her considered but still emotional responses to everything, not just the betrayal but how she works around it and eventually works past it.

Fandoms: FRINGE
Characters/Pairings: Astrid Farnsworth, Walter Bishop
Length: 1188 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] geekcreative
Author Website: unknown
Why this must be read:

We know that in Astrid's job weird is the rule and that managing Walter requires a special form of learnt intuition; by later seasons, and in most fic featuring her, Astrid has dealt with those problems and slotted into the team seamlessly. This S1 fic I liked because it showed her considering herself still very out of place, trying her best yet frustrated at how little made sense and it just felt a realistic portrayal of early on Astrid that was good to read.

Characters/Pairings: Peter Bishop, mentions of his mother before her name was known
Length: 4496 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] kassrachel
Author Website: on Ao3
Why this must be read:

Despite all the potential in the pre-series wandering soul that was Peter before Fringe Division, this isn't something that often gets looked at in fic, and this fic stood out in particular for the fact Peter keeps himself rooted if not in one location, around the one person in his life he feels he can still depend upon. Given that it is more than a little bit crushing as the story here, told via his emails to his mom, unfolds.

Why this must be read:

A S3 Post-Marionette piece that balances the canon angst for Olivia that S3 is heavy with, that episode especially, with the rarely seen friendship for her and Astrid. It's nice to feel here that Olivia does have somewhere to turn other than just Peter.

Time for my crack_van fandom collision rec this month - Fringe/Skyfall with a dash of femslash.

Fandoms: FRINGE
Characters/Pairings: Alternate!Olivia Dunham/Female!M, Olivia Dunham, Nina Sharp/Female!M
Length: 2732 words
Author on DW: cleo
Author Website: on Ao3
Why this must be read:

Because for all the Fringe crossovers, I think I like the ones that are international best. The impact on the rest of the world seems largely ignored in the series and this, with it's face off between Nina and the Female!M of the newer Bond series, feels an appropriate tone for it. At times it is a little hard to tell which segments are which universe in this fic but overall the concept of this fic intrigues me and I like the differences between how Olivia and alt!Olivia are needed and deal with M and her alternate in very different ways.

Length: 877 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] anivad
Author Website: http://www.whoaisnotme.net
Why this must be read:

The Fringe fandom tends to do gender in fics in the form of bodyswaps or temporary gender switch sometimes, but this ficlet is the only one I've read so far Fringe-wise dealing with the idea one of the characters could be transgender. It is an interesting look at both Olivia's in the light of that idea, which packs a lot into its brief space.

Length: 32559 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] eretria
Author Website: on Ao3
Why this must be read:

Because this is 30k+ words of well considered, angsty and even sciencey where required, build up to the threesome featured. This fic also fills in a number of gaps in canon like how the other alt!team members learn about the news Liv received in the S3 episode 'Immortality' and about Charlie's background over there. It's a little bit casefic that is reminiscent of the S2's 'What Lies Below' but mostly an interesting delve into the dynamics of the team members following the changes for Liv in early S3, with a good focus on Charlie as part of that.

Length: 2912 words

Why this must be read:

Because the overarching theme is Olivia searching/rescuing Peter, which for Fringe fits I think as it seems to be a universal truth seems that Olivia rescues herself as well as others, and this is a nice role reversal of what you usually get for pairings. The twist with this is it shows how she feels when it isn't easy to do so, how it reveals her growing feelings when he is in jeopardy each time.

Characters/Pairings: Astrid Farnsworth
Length: 1600 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] dotfic
Author Website: on Ao3
Why this must be read:

When there is Astrid fic what you get most of the time is reflection or drama, the internal thoughts of her on what happens in/to the department or perhaps some 'Let's Get Astrid Laid' fic. None of that is bad because more Astrid fic is generally good but what tends to be missing is the obligatory weird things happen to characters stuff, so rarely do I see fic with those happening to Astrid (unless it's part of the 'LGAL' efforts i.e. sex pollen). So I found this fic great to read as one where something decidedly odd does happen to her, which also doubles as a not often seen kind of comedy Fringe fic too given what the something odd is. It brought a smile to my face for multiple reasons.

Why this must be read:

Not many shows have much mention of eating habits - Fringe does at least show a few which is nice for those who are interested in really knowing as much as possible about characters - and by extension it's not really a big thing for most fandoms. What made this fic special was it extrapolated what we already knew about Olivia's likes in the show, melded with how we know she works and lives. What comes from that is some good insight into her character by way of the unexpected medium of her relationship to food. I'd never have thought 'What I really need to read is a fic about Olivia & food' but now I found it, I'm happy I did.

It's not like partners working together have to have UST but it is a pretty commonly done, and enjoyed, trope that hasn't missed these two characters from Season 4's ep19 either. This pre-ep ficlet has a little slice of their tough life, that is a part nice camaderie, with hints of brewing UST, and part bittersweetly angst by the end.

This is an action packed Olivia-centric ficlet that was written long enough ago to play on the multiple universes idea in a fairly different way to canon's approach. It is dark as the title implies and it definitely messes with you, with a very turning twist in it, but it does so in a very enjoyable manner if you are prone to like this kind of fic.

This is I reckon a gem of a S5 AU, of which there are admittedly few right now seeing as that season only just aired earlier this year but this was the most interesting one I've read so far. Why this must be read:

The thing that stands out about this fic, apart from the novelty of Liv actually trying drinking, is how it treads a fine line post-Immortality of Liv's attraction to Lincoln and why she continues to do nothing about. The overarching theme of fire/fever also feels particularly fitting for her.

Why this must be read:

Because each of the short sections in a different character POV provides very decent insight in such a small space of how they are each affected by early S3 events. I love too that we get essentially a compare/contract in this fic between the pairs of blue/redverse characters, and the bookending of the fic with each Astrid perspective is an especially good touch for that.

Why this must be read:

Firstly because it's darn rare to read either of these characters slashed with anyone other than Lincoln Lee. Secondly, despite being quite short, it's an interestingly grittier snapshot of a different altverse team based on a slightly different ending to S2 where Nick survives, which gives a bit more dimension to Nick and how effected he is by everything going on.

Why this must be read:

Back in early S1 of Fringe there was a sense that Peter and Astrid got on perhaps better than any of the others in their department, and this fic exploring that feels like it could well still fit into canon from a time before his focus went elsewhere to Olivia, if you choose to see it that way. Either way this is simply a good fic for the above pairing.

We get in this not only some exploration of Astrid and the Astrid/Peter friendship but of Peter as he was, a charmer seeking connection, with the bonus of bondage.

Because this is one of the most detailed character studies of the character around. Why this must be read:

Observer based fic isn't that common for the fandom surprisingly, and hasn't really come up much past the first season airing, but this fic comes based off one of the interesting changes in Season 5 regarding the character September. It manages to be both insightful into the differences in habits/mental state of Observer being and also into the peculiarities of humanity as seen from someone with another perspective, with a side of smut and slash worked in there too.
