Hello, my name is [livejournal.com profile] cloudtrader and I'll be driving two vans again this month (really, people, go sign up for a chance to drive the van -- Doctor Who drivers are particularly needed!). I will be recommending stories for a nice little fandom you may have heard of called Xena: Warrior Princess (and Hercules, too, don't worry). This was my first online fandom, starting back in 1995 and wow, it's been awhile! The van is old and a bit decrepit, so help me out, please, and point me towards any stories you think must be recommended. And enjoy!

(PS: ALL of Xena: Warrior Princess and MOST of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys are available Watch-It-Now on Netflix, FYI!)

Why this must be read:
Let's start out the Herc & Xena recs RIGHT, with some hardcore crack and wacky godly hijinks! :D

This little gem of a story makes me giggle, because it could have been taken straight from either show, with a pissy Ares, a pissed-off Aphrodite, a bitchy Discord, and Strife there to stir the pot. Just a little something from one of the fandom's best authors to whet your appetite.

Yes, yes, yes! We are there yet!

I don't know about you, but I'm a bit boggled. When I set out with the crazy idea of reccing a vid every single day this month, I wasn't entirely sure we'd make it this far. But here we are. The very last rec of this monster set!

The really scary thing is that I could have kept right on reccing for a while yet before running out of good small fandom or multi-fandom songvids. There are just so many awesome vidders out there, and I hope this set has given you some inkling of the amazing quality and range of their work.

Anyway, enough from me. I hope you've all enjoyed the trip as much as I have. Happy new year!

Why this vid kicks ass: Was there any other songvid I could have ended the set with? I think not. This is the ultimate vid about vidding. It's sharply edited, it's funny, it has all our favourite characters doin' their thang... but most of all, it's a celebration of the grassroots, newfangled awesomeness of songvids.

Why this vid kicks ass: We've already touched on my love of zombies once in this rec set, so I'm sure you're not terribly surprised to see I'm reccing a whole zombie-themed songvid today. The thing you need to know about this songvid, the thing that makes it stand head and shoul... various body parts above other zombie songvids, is that "Zombie Jamboree" has dancing zombies.

Yes. I know! That was my first reaction too.

Fandom: HERCULES: THE LEGENDARY JOURNEYS
Author on LJ:[livejournal.com profile] ltlj
Author Website: The Less Than Legendary Journeys
Why this must be read:

This is my last rec for Hercules: the Legendary Journeys, and I'm going out with a bang.

After the fifth season broke my heart and I thought nobody was even writing Hercules fanfiction anymore, I discovered this fantastic story, and I fell in love with Hercules and Iolaus all over again.

Home Is Where The Heart Is begins after Iolaus' death in Sumeria, and then takes off into a storyline that effortlessly trumps anything that actually happened in the series' Dahak arc. This story works on all levels - as a thrilling fantasy adventure in a beautifully realized setting, as a portrait of an uprooted Hercules who has lost his other self, as a heartwrenching story of a love greater than death.

Also, as if that weren't enough, there is Kheper Djedi, one of the best original characters I've ever encountered in fanfic. If you want to know why I like him so much, just read the bit below. Then go read the whole story, and rejoice in the knowledge that when you're done, there are more stories waiting for you, set in the same universe.

I hope you have enjoyed these stories. And if you'd like more recs or more Hercules and Iolaus discussion, I hope you'll join us at the [livejournal.com profile] herc_iolaus LJ community.

Fandom: HERCULES: THE LEGENDARY JOURNEYS

Why this must be read:

A Young Hercules story told in Hercules', Iolaus' and Jason's letters home. I've never seen epistolary form used in this fandom before, but this is just perfectly done and very funny. Liz Sharpe makes excellent use of the different points of view in telling her tale. She drops a hint here, then another there, and builds joke upon joke, managing to save the best joke for last.

Fandom: HERCULES: THE LEGENDARY JOURNEYS
Author Website: Heroes' Path
Why this must be read:

Angela Field's Argonauts are a bunch of appealingly rowdy young men, having the kind of adventures that the Young Hercules crew only wished they had the budget to film.

Angela excels at getting Iolaus into trouble, and this story is one of her best, foreshadowing Iolaus' later troubles in the episode Web of Desire and bringing tons of hurt/comfort, angst and adventure.

Warning: if you're an arachnophobic, you might want to skip this one. Or carry a really big shoe.

Why this must be read:

This story pulls the rug out from under you in the very first scene, and the madness never stops after that. In Vino Salacitas is a well-plotted mix of farce and adventure story; there's a large cast of characters, but Hercules and Iolaus take center stage...and how.

Why this must be read:

The author's first story in this fandom is called Many Deaths, was written before 1999 and already recced here. And then, in 2004, the author resurfaced and wrote another lovely snarky, sexy fic, and there was much rejoicing.

To appreciate this story to the fullest, you should know that 'Hercules and Iolaus spend a romantic night at an inn' is something of a cliché in the fandom. In the series, what they mostly do at inns is get into brawls, but apparently no slashfic is complete without feather beds, rose petal strewn baths and a gourmet meal or two. There's an inn in this story too, but it's...different.

Also? Snark = foreplay. I'm just saying.

Why this must be read:

Far in the future, a pair of archaeologists discovers the body of a man frozen in the ice of Northern Siberia. A man who appears to be 2500 years old, whose clothes don't match his supposed origins. A man who claims to be a mythological hero...

If you don't count crossovers, this may be the only science-fiction AU we have in this corner of the fandom. This is one of those stories where I don't want to give too much of the plot away; let me just say that it's a long, satisfying read. The worldbuilding is meticulous, and I love the way the story keeps you hanging on the edge until the very end.

Why this must be read:

This is a Hercules: the Legendary Journeys/Stargate crossover where Iolaus gets stranded in the SG universe. I adore it. I've never seen SG beyond the movie and an episode or two, and that didn't hinder my enjoyment of this story at all, nor do I think an SG fan who has never seen Hercules would have any trouble. It's got great snark, especially between Jack and Iolaus, great character moments, and an appearance by one of my all time favorite original characters. Also, this story reinforced my conviction that Iolaus is incredibly sexy when he's pissed off. *g*

13th-Jun-2005 08:46 pm A Prize of War, by Sheffield (NC-17)
Fandom: HERCULES: THE LEGENDARY JOURNEYS
Pairing: Ares/Iolaus, Hercules/Iolaus
Author Website: Dreamtime
Why this must be read:

I had some qualms about reccing this story. Not because it's not good; I think it's fantastic. But if you're anything like me, you're going to read this story alternately shuddering in horror at what the author puts the characters through and sighing at the excellent writing and characterisation. If you have nightmares, I don't wish to be held responsible.

The bombastic intro to Hercules: the Legendary Journeys begins, 'In a time of myth and legend, when the ancient gods were petty and cruel and they plagued mankind with suffering...' and in A Prize of War, Sheffield shows us what that really means. What a god can really do, with an endless cold cruelty at his disposal.

The plot sounds hackneyed - Ares captures, tortures and rapes Iolaus, to get back at Hercules - but the execution is brilliantly, terrifyingly original. It's not just Ares who is the villain here. Both Zeus and Hephaestus play ambiguous parts, and it's clear that they are very nearly as cold as Ares is when it comes to mortals: they are tools, toys, weapons. Xena, Autolycus, Salmoneus and others show up to help Hercules, who nearly goes mad trying to find Iolaus, while Iolaus uses all his audacity and cleverness to try to escape. But mortals can also be turned into weapons against each other...

Fandom: HERCULES: THE LEGENDARY JOURNEYS
Pairing: Hercules/Iolaus
Author Website: The Less Than Legendary Journeys
Why this must be read:

As I mentioned earlier, I do love stories which give an outsider's POV on the heroes' relationship.

The POV character here is Bellerphon, a young prince and soldier-in-training. He meets Hercules and Iolaus as they arrive at an army encampment on the eve of battle, to discuss strategy with allied kings and warriors like Achilles, Philoctetes and Agamemnon. I love the witty contrast between Bellerphon's expectations of famous heroes like Hercules and Iolaus and the somewhat scruffier reality.

The mood of the story slowly darkens as old campaigners are reunited and old grievances aired anew. Bellerphon doesn't know the backstory, but the bits and pieces slowly come together, and Bellerphon's perceptions change.

It's a sparely written story, with excellent eye for detail and characterization, and it brings Homeric myth and Hercules-the-series together in a very plausible way. It's bittersweet, but the ending always lifts me up, and when I finish it I sigh and long for the author to give us the whole story of Hercules and Iolaus at Troy.

8th-Jun-2005 10:10 am Hero Worship, by Nym (NC-17)
Fandom: HERCULES: THE LEGENDARY JOURNEYS
Pairing: Hercules/Iolaus
Author Website: Amplexus
Why this must be read:

The heart of this story is that Hercules and Iolaus are trying to rebuild their relationship in the face of mortality.

Nym writes tough, emotionally challenging, uncompromising stories, and her Hercules and Iolaus are more grim than we've usually seen them on the show, but she makes it work. She sets up tensions and undercurrents in their relationship that feel believable and real, not something the author tacked on to create Teh Angst.

There's something Iolaus says, near the end, that has moved me to tears several times. But it's not the line, not really - it's the way the whole story builds toward it. And no, I'm not quoting it here, but I think you'll know it when you see it.

Fandom: HERCULES: THE LEGENDARY JOURNEYS
Pairing: none
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] naomi1642
Author Website: The Less Than Legendary Journeys
Why this must be read:

Naomi Prince's stories balance between sharp-witted humor and a solid, serious adventure plot, and the characterization is always excellent. 'Ill Met By Moonlight' is one of her best, managing to be grim and hilarious by turns : the plot features a hapless journalist who wants to interview Hercules and gets dragged headlong into a nightmarish adventure concerning a midnight race, the goddess Hecate, a townful of ghosts and a pack of undead dogs.

I love stories where you get an outsider's perspective on the heroes' relationship, and the journalist's increasingly bewildered response to Hercules and Iolaus is priceless. Plus, there's the oh-so-married bickering between Hercules and Iolaus - why yes, I have a soft spot for bickering *g* - and the hurt/comfort, and the clever dialogue, and the inventive use of Hecate, a goddess sadly missing from the H:tLJ series.

Just a great, hugely entertaining story.

Why this must be read:

This story is loosely linked to Lightning, but it stands alone well enough. Both stories are A/U's, playing with possibilities. Here, Iolaus swears himself to Ares as a boy, and Hercules and Iolaus never meet - not until General Iolaus is tired of fighting, and a demigod with a death wish decides to join his army...

Excerpt )

Sometimes Valentin's style grows a bit too purple for me, but her vivid, sensual writing makes this story a joy to read. I love the many little character moments - Iolaus' and Hercules' inauspicious first meeting, Ares' annoyance and amusement at a young, insouciant Iolaus - and the portrait of Iolaus as a war-weary general. Plus, the banter is snarky, the hurt/comfort is delicious and the sex is sizzling. Go read!

I'll start things off with a favorite h/c adventure story.

Pairing: none, it's gen.
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] sivib
Author Website: Sivi's Fanfic
Why this must be read:

I love hurt/comfort stories, but there is an unfortunate tendency in part of the fandom to turn Iolaus into a wimp who can't take care of himself. (See also: Whiny!Blair, Abused!Methos, and Cult of the Pallid Hunter, The.) Hecate's Chalice isn't one of that ilk. Iolaus gets into trouble - gets seriously hurt, in fact - but he solves his own problems and remains his feisty self:

Excerpt )

Hecate's Chalice is a long, well-plotted adventure story with great original characters and a real episode feel to it, the kind of story you save to reread on a rainy day. Also, there's a sly nod to one of my favourite fantasy novels, Barry Hughart's Bridge of Birds, that makes me grin every time I see it. This is the author's only H:tLJ story, and I live in hope that she'll write more.

Why this must be read: This story focuses on the relationship between Hercules, Iolaus, and Jason, as the three men remember a fishing trip they took when they were younger that turned into a battle for their lives against Discord. There's angst and hurt/comfort in just the right amounts, as Discord disguises herself as Hercules and tries to make Iolaus think Herc has tried to kill him. It's well-written and a good look at how legendary friendships were formed.

(This is my last Hercules rec and I hope you enjoyed them! The next time our turn comes around, someone will be doing recs for stories about the other characters and showing different aspects of the fandom.)

This is a solid adventure story with good prose, good characterization, some very nice Hercules and Iolaus relationship moments, and lots of action. It's also a great story for hurt/comfort fans. Why this must be read: This is one of the first stories I found when I got into the fandom. It's an adventure story where Iolaus loses his memory and ends up a slave in a far away land, where Hercules eventually finds him. I know the plot sounds very typical, and I tend to dislike most of the Iolaus-as-slave stories I've found since they tend to be more Iolaus-as-pitiful-victim stories, but this one has some original concepts (the God of Madness and the sacrifice scene are effective and scary), good characterization, a sexy part for Aphrodite, and it's great watching Iolaus work through his initial distrust of Hercules and reinvent himself as a hero, even without his memory.

Why this must be read: Most of Pythia's stories are also action adventure with a good helping of hurt/comfort, and make inventive use of Greek mythology. All are original and well-plotted, drawing on history, fantasy, and science fiction elements to place the characters in rich well-described settings. In "The Spoils of War," Iolaus is captured by a harpy and Hercules has to rescue him. But things aren't quite that simple. Why this must be read: Though this is technically (sort of, kind of) a death story, it's also a great love story framed by an original concept. It's also probably one of the most recommended stories in the fandom, and is a perfect quick read for Valentine's Day. Fandom: HERCULES: THE LEGENDARY JOURNEYS
Pairing: Hercules/Iolaus
Author on LJ: n/a
Author Website: The Less Than Legendary Journeys
Why this must be read:
Randi writes slash stories with Hercules and Iolaus not as exclusive lovers, but as bisexual and having sex with each other as warrior-companions-friends -- not something you see in the fanfic very often, though it fits in seamlessly with the canon. In "Imagos," Iolaus is accidentally transported to another world, where Hercules is a warlord who has conquered Rome and has now returned with his army to rule a devastated Greece. Iolaus has to find a way to get himself home before the alternate Hercules discovers him, while back in his own world Hercules, Salmoneus and Xena frantically try to open the portal again to rescue him. This is a longer story than the short NC17 pieces that Randi normally writes, and there are cameo appearances by Borias, Gabrielle and Joxer.

Why this must be read: Most of Angela's stories are in print fanzines, but she's starting to put a few new ones online. She writes action-adventure with a side helping of hurt/comfort, and she doesn't neglect the fantasy and sword-and sorcery elements that really make Hercules fanfiction for me. My favorite of her online stories so far is the first of her Argosy stories, an AU version of how Hercules and Iolaus meet Jason and start the voyage on the Argo. This version uses a few more elements of the original mythology and combines it with a murder mystery plot, as Herc and Iolaus try to discover who is killing the heroes who have come together in a competition to join the Argo's crew.

Author Website: Handbasket Holidays (H:tLJ and YH stories moved to Less Than Legendary Journeys)
Why this must be read: "Future Perfect: Imperative" is one of my all time favorite Hercules stories and one of my many favorite Artemis Artemis stories, because it's funny. Fall down, laugh out loud, hurt yourself funny, and all the humor comes out of the natural canon characterizations. The plot concerns Aphrodite bringing the adult Hercules and Iolaus back in time to meet their younger selves from the Young Hercules era. The Aphrodite of the past is impatient for young Hercules and Iolaus to get together, and thinks showing them what a great couple their older selves are will expedite her desire for: "I want... flesh! I want carnage! I want naked boys rolling around next to the campfire! I want... I want... to exercise my divine right to voyeurism!!" Needless to say, no one cooperates. The humor and the mix of poignant moments, where the older characters see the young Iolaus and realize what he's got in store for him, make for an excellent story on all levels. Artemis Artemis has also written NC17 Hercules fiction, and also writes as Helena Handbasket.
