Why this must be read: Because it takes a popular fic cliche in this fandom - Brian, who doesn't give a crap about animals, gets a pet - and actually makes it work. It works because it's well-written, and handles the subject with a great deal of humour :D Brian, being Brian, doesn't want the dog at all to begin with.

It's set between seasons four and five, and I honestly find it a great read. I've read it a bunch of times :)

Fandom: QUEER AS FOLK: US
Pairing: Brian/Justin
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] xie_xie_xie
Author Website: Fic index on her LJ
Why this must be read: Because - as those in the fandom would say - it's an excellent example of a fic that's all about Teh Love :D

Set post-series, it starts with Justin in New York and Brian in Pittsburgh - with Justin trying to do his darndest to let Brian know that their relationship is still very much alive, despite the 400 miles between them. Of course, this is Brian Kinney he's dealing with. Eschewing anything that might possibly be regarded as romantic, he lets Brian know that he's thinking about him by sending him a blank e-mail. Every day.

To say anything else would spoil it, but it's a decent-sized read, the characters are in character, the sex is hot, the other characters actually have stuff to do, it's well thought-out and very well written. And very enjoyable ;)

'Plans' is actually the first in a post-series series Xie is writing. All of the stories written so far are in the LJ link above, and none of the stories are cliffhangers. The latest part, 'Families', is currently a WiP.

Definitely recommended. I've re-read 'Plans' a few times now already, and it's a relatively new fic.

Why this must be read: Because this fic is so very, very Brian and Justin.

They break up for the eleventh time. Yes, eleventh :D This time it is absolutely, definitely, over for good.

As usual, they're fooling nobody.

Excerpt:

He sighs and hangs his damp jacket over Brian's Armani, kicks his shoes off and steps into the loft.

And is met by the sight of Brian and a trick (what else?) on the *kitchen counter*. Where Justin likes to *cook*.

And that is the eleventh time they break up. (Why else?)

I love it because it's so completely how I can see them ending up some day. They're both such a pair of drama queens ;D

Why this must be read: Very funny and very clever :D It is, quite literally, about what Justin keeps in his scrapbox. We actually get to see a visual representation of each item, and then read a fic that goes along with it, telling us how it relates to his relationship with Brian.

Justin, as always, kicks butt.

Excerpt:

“But did you have to use that word?”

“What? Boyfriend?” He smiles as Brian shudders, “Oh, drop the act Brian, you’re such a drama queen. Anyway what would you prefer? … Significant other? Partner? Light of my li-”

Brian interrupts him with raised eyebrows, “I’m warning you…”

But Justin continues “-life? Cupcake? Honeybunch?”

Lots of fun :D

Fandom: QUEER AS FOLK: US
Pairing: Brian/Justin
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] darksylvia

Why this must be read: Oh. My. God. It's a QAF/Friends crossover, and it actually works. Better than that, it works FANTASTICALLY. It's almost all from the PoV of the Friends characters as Ugly Naked Guy moves out - and Hot Naked Guy moves in.

Yes, he's Brian. And he has a lot of sex ;)

Excerpt:

Joey squinted out the window in disbelief. "I didn't know anybody could get their legs up that far."

"Wow," said Chandler. "In a completely literal sense, that is the gayest thing I've ever seen."

Although it's a crossover it's definitely about Brian and Justin. I've re-read this I don't know how many times, and it always makes me laugh :D

Hi! I'm Suz, and I'm driving the Queer as Folk: US van this month. I love Brian/Justin and hate any character/pairing bashing of any kind. I'm very happy to be sharing the QAF love - I'm another one who's posting recs while she's on vacation :D

Author Website: LJ memories
Why this must be read: This was one of the first fics I ever read in this fandom, and still remains one of my absolute favourites.

I'm not going to quote from it because it's quite short, but it's very powerful and one of the surprisingly few fics that deals with the possible consequences of casual drug use frequently seen in the show and in its fic. That should probably give you some warning about the content of the fic, too. There's nothing graphic, but it is quite shocking. Or I thought it was anyway ;)

Highly recommended. Angst.

Why this must be read:

Russell T. Davies begat Queer as Folk UK, which begat Queer as Folk US, which begat Brian Kinney.

Russell T. Davies begat New Who, which begat Jack Harkness.

Yet only in fanfic will the two ever meet. Tragic, really, because if two characters ever shared a world view (not to mention an assurance of their own desirability), it's Jack and Brian.

Oh, and there's plot about alien technology, too. )

Title: The Man Who Wasn't There by Chase
Pairings Brian/Michael, Brian/Wesley, Brian/Spike at various times
Author on LJ [livejournal.com profile] chase820
Author Web site: Chase's LJ Memories

Why this must be read:
The story takes place after Queer As Folk U.S. Season Three and after Angel Season Four. No real spoilers for AtS Season Five, except the general situation. Brian Kinney leaves Pittsburgh and goes to work at Wolfram & Hart--a brilliant idea, handled so very well by Chase. This would work for fans of either series, but fans of both shows will be especially pleased. (The QAF prequel is The Man Who Sold the World, a nearly finished WIP, Brian/Michael. It's definitely worth reading.)

Why this must be read:

There's nothing better in the Brian/Michael ship than pre-series fic, in my opinion. Because there's still so much hope for the future! That's one of the things that I love about this fic, how aware Brian is of the future. How he pushes it away and yet keeps it close at the same time. He knows that someday is soon enough for him and Michael. The dialogue, the sweetness, the history, the caring, the bullshit, the friendship: everything that I adore about the pairing can be found in this fic. So that's why I chose it for my last rec for this month, because it represents my love for the fandom so well.

World Enough and Time

Anyways, I had a good time being your QAF driver for this month and I hope anyone checking out these recs found some great fic. :D

Pairing: Brian/Ethan
Author on LJ: [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]
Author Website: unknown
Why this must be read:

My one rule about reading rare pairings is that the author has to make it believable. That these two people who never came together in canon, came together for this fic. I think that was achieved remarkably in "Segue". I not only believed that Brian and Ethan would be in the kind of situation that the plot speaks of, I was also really disappointed when the fic was over. I was so intrigued by the fic and it rang so true for me, that it left me wanting more. So even though this is a pairing that most people would probably never think of reading, I had to recommend it.

Author Website: relative-virtue
Why this must be read:

I just enjoy the pairing. And it's definitely a rare one. I think this may be the only Brian/Emmett fic I've ever seen, so thankfully it's a good one. It really plays up the odd dynamic between the two of them; not quite friends and not quite enemies. Add sex into the mix and it only becomes more interesting. I also like how the fic, in its own way, actually fits into canon. That's obviously hard to do with a non-canon pairing, but it works here, and that's all that matters. The fic is dark and hot, and poignant. I think that more QAF fans should experience the Brian/Emmett love. Because they're both tall. ;)

Why this must be read:

This is one of those stories that just grabbed me from the first words. I loved the premise, which I won't ruin for those who haven't read the story. I will say that Justin and Ben are essential to the plot, which is enjoyable and it's something you don't see all the time in Brian/Michael fic. I loved the execution of the story. The dynamics between the characters were realized very well by the author. She managed to integrate personality and motivation into the fic at a level that I also don't see very often in these kinds of stories. It's a good read.

Why this must be read:

It's hard to find good fic about Hunter. Mostly because no one bothers to write it. But what interests me about him as a character (in the show, and especially in this fic) are the parallels that can be drawn between him and Brian. This little glimpse into the inner workings of Hunter's mind is dark and intelligent; the ficlet also scores major points for capturing that hint of vulnerability under the bravado. It's just extremely well-written, characterized, etc. And any Hunter fans out there should definitely read it and marvel.

You know that you love a story when you feel the need to rec it even though you hate both the characters that it features. And I really do hate both Lindsay and Sam. Yet I find myself feeling sorry for them in this fic, and for once, I actually understood their motivation. Which is something that the show never did for me. So yes, the writing of this fic is killer; beautiful imagery and in-depth characterization. Wonderful all around.

Why this must be read:

Pre-series is my favorite genre of QAF fiction. Mostly because we learn so little through canon and it's nice to see some of the holes filled in. "Under Construction" starts with Brian's loft and how he made it his own. From there is spins into an AU history of a Brian/Michael romance, which hits all the right notes: realistic characterization, interesting plot and hot sex scenes. I wanted to rec the fic for its creativity and for the basic superiority of its writing. And because I just love it.

Why this must be read:

When I first read the story I told the author that the fic was great - in a weird, traumatizing way. That description still holds. Well-written, and more importantly, interesting. And even though the pairing is complete crack, the fic stays true to the characters and their voices. Then somehow Ethan and Blake being together suddenly just works. I have no idea how. Alright! I'm [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] and I'll be driving the QAF US van for the month of March. I'm a Brian/Michael shipper with a soft spot for rare pairings and gen fic. Fandom: QUEER AS FOLK US
Pairing: Brian/Michael (unrequited)
Author on LJ: [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]
Author Website: Obsessive Tendencies
Why this must be read:

The fic is very much in line with how the show turned out, in terms of Michael's development. And I do love this fic, despite my shipping tendencies. It's the quiet angst that gets me every time. It's a story where the ending doesn't have to be happy, and love doesn't have to be requited because that's what's realistic. Life doesn't work the way Michael expected it to and he learns to accept that. And maybe it's better for him that he does.

Why this must be read:

Don't run screaming. This might be one of the most perfect fics I have ever read in this fandom. The characterizations are possibly even better than the creators', and the subject is so imaginative. I'll just quote for you her summary and A/N:

Summary: Have you ever suddenly realized you forgot to do something really, really, really just ridiculously important?
Author's Note: All I know is that my mother would have murdered me.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I always wanted to see more of Ben's family, and, well, this fic doesn't really give that to us. It gives us something So. Much. Better.

From the opening lines, I was laughing 'til my sides split. Give it a read. You'll be so, so glad that you did.

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] suzvoy
Author Website: She just calls it "Queer as Folk", but I noticed I have it labeled in my favorites as "Queer as Suz".
Why this must be read:

It's sort of an AU, but not really. She messed with the timeline a bit, but considering how much the show's creators mess with the timelines, that doesn't mean anything. It's a post 309 fic, and it's one of my favorite fics ever. Suz writes the snappiest Justin and Brian, and gives their relationship such spunk ('scuse the pun) that it's nothing less than pure joy to read.

So if you wondered what Brian got for Justin for his 20th birthday after his disastrous gift for Justin's 19th, this is the place to find out. And if you didn't wonder, well, you should, and you should read this. And if you have no idea who I'm talking about when I say "Brian and Justin", well, then, you absolutely have GOT to read this, because you're totally missing out.

Why must this be read besides the fact that it's by Jane? It's a fun AU. Justin is even more of a spoiled brat than on the show. Brian's decided to take a break from his life, and he's gotten himself a job on... Ethan's yacht. Justin is Ethan's boytoy, and Brian meets what appears to be ultimate!princess!Justin, and he doesn't like him much. I'm sure you can guess where things would go from there. I recced her already here, and she's been recced here even before, anyway.

Quick backstory: Ted, who has always been insecure about his appearance, has plastic surgery in the fifth season of the show. And comes back looking... exactly the same. But, it has boosted his ego to Brian Kinney-ic proportions. This fic is a gap-filler for episode 509, based on when Brian said to Ted, "Fucking Christ, Theodore, is there anyone in this ‘burgh you haven’t boned since your extreme makeover?" Why this must be read:

I mentioned my whole unrequited Ted/Justin guilty pleasure, right?

While I, personally, never saw any hints of Ted/Justin on the show (though Scott Lowell, the actor who plays Ted says it was apparent since season 2), I could totally and truthfully picture it. Justin is, in every way, Ted's type. But then, I'm not out to prove to you that Ted/Justin could exist. I'm here to tell you you should read this fic.

And, perhaps, that I have an unhealthy desire for more Ted/Justin fics. And this fic is the reason why.

I don't feel like I need to blather on about why any Starla!fic should be read. She's been recced here multiple times before, and that should speak for itself. But in regard to this fic, she has this magical way of making you believe in this total non-canon pairing, while still keeping everyone fully in character.

This fic also has, in my opinion, the most perfect line ever to encapsulate Justin's personality: cut for line lifted directly from fic. )

Read the fic that spawned my fetish!

Hi. *waves* I'm driving the QaF:US van for the month of February. A little about me? Well, I'm a Brian/Justin shipper, with a thing for Ted/Justin. And I'm not anti-anyone, not even Ethan. *ducks flying shoe* So I'll be reccing fics that I feel show all the characters in a fair and realistic light. And? I don't do angst.

Except for this fic.

Fandom: QUEER AS FOLK: US
Pairing: Brian/Justin, Brian/Michael
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] mclachlan
Author Website: her stories on bjfic.net
Why this must be read:

R.C. is one of my favorite authors in fandom. While her fics do tend to be (really, really) angsty, she has, to me, an excellent grip of the characters as they're portrayed on the show. Her writing is balanced and doesn't favor any one character over any other, which is a quality I really appreciate.

As for why I chose this particular fic of hers (besides the fact that it's brand new), is that as much as I adore Brian, it made me hate him for just a brief moment. And then I remembered that THIS IS AN AU. It's not canon. And when a fic can make you forget that nothing like it ever happened on the show? That's the sign of an excellent story.

Quick synopsis: In episode 212, Michael finds out that Ben, his new boyfriend, had sex with Brian, Michael's best friend and unrequited love interest of... probably at least a decade, before Michael and Ben ever met. There is a scene where Brian offers to fuck Michael, so that Michael can see what it's like. And Michael turns him down. This fic answers the question: what if Michael hadn't stopped him?

If you like this story, and you surely will, make sure you leave R.C. some feedback!
