Fandom: SKINS
Pairing: Tony/Effy
Length: 2:45

Vidder website: youtube channel.
Why this vid kicks ass: It's such a haunting, sharp portrayal of their beautifully fucked-up relationship. This is everything you need to know about Tony/Effy, not just in basic fact, but in atmosphere and subtleties, too, which is what makes up most of their dynamic. Not to mention that dazzleme7 is probably one of the best fan vidders on youtube.

Pairing: Naomi/Michelle (gen 1 + 2)
Length: 43,000 words
Author on lj: [livejournal.com profile] eskimo_jo
Author website: [livejournal.com profile] rabbithearts (author's fic journal)
Why this must be read: This is the most epic fic I have read in this fandom, hands down. Not only is Naomi and Michelle's relationship beautiful and complicated, it's also believable - which is quite a feat, considering the two characters have never met. There's excellent characterization all around - as it contains a cast of various characters from both gens 1 and 2 - but Effy's voice is particular spot on, which is a hard thing to do. It's a wild ride, and it will probably make you cry, but it is so worth the read.

19th-Aug-2012 05:48 pm you asked what's wrong with me by miss_bennie (PG-13)
Fandom: SKINS
Pairing: Gen (gen 1)
Length: 2,600 words
Author on lj: [livejournal.com profile] miss_bennie
Author website: (author's fanfic tag)
Why this must be read: I don't know about anyone else, but I just about sobbed my way through the first few episodes of season two, and a lot of it was because there was such a stark disconnect between the end of season one and the beginning of season two - and obviously that was done on purpose and makes for excellent television - but you get the feeling like you missed a whole lot between those two episodes. This fic fills in the blanks. And does so perfectly, it takes place between season's one and two and is centered on Tony's issues. The voices are perfect, and the characterization is scarily accurate for every single person. Probably the best gen fic I have read in the fandom.

14th-Aug-2012 11:20 pm the beginning after the end by bugbitten (PG-13)
Fandom: SKINS
Pairing: Katie/Effy (gen 2)
Length: 5,000 words
Author on lj: [livejournal.com profile] bugbitten
Author website: (author's fic tag)
Why this must be read: If there's any fandom that needs fix-it fic, it's Skins, and fix-it fic that is cautiously optimistic in a way that fits in with canon, with delicious, believable femslash on top is just all the more wonderful. It's set post-season three, and takes things in a direction that I would have loved to see explored more fully in the show (with or without the romance.) The Katie voice is sharp and deft, and the whole thing is completely enjoyable, beginning to end (pun intended).

9th-Aug-2012 08:18 pm Not Exactly An Epistolary Romance by iridescentglow (R)
Fandom: SKINS
Pairing: Tony/Effy (gen 1 + 2)
Length: 5,200 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] iridescentglow
Author Website: (fanfic tag)
Why this must be read: Tony and Effy's relationship has so many layers to it - whether or not you're including the quasi-canon incest factor - that it's hard to find fic that captures that, while still maintaing the bizarre humor that is inherent in Skins canon. This fic weaves both of those together seamlessly, giving a glimpse at a post-gen 1 casually incestuous relationship between that fits in so well with canon, you'll barely even notice you're not watching it play out onscreen. Also, there's the bonus brilliant Cook characterization.

Pairing: Mini/Franky (gen 3)
Length: 7,300 words

Why this must be read: And here be more femslash. This fic is - in my humble opinion - quite simply, how it should have gone post-season five. It's everything the show could have made the relationship, told in short glimpses, sparse prose, and lovely imagery. There's a quiet, languid feel to the storytelling that fits in with the atmosphere of season five much better, in my opinion, than the loud, intense drama of season six.

It deals with their issues, individual and shared, without blowing them up to extreme proportions, and they learn to get along through the constant push and pull of their contrasting personalities. Best of all, it's told through the ever-observant eyes of a quiet, clever S5!Franky, who is believably quite enamored with Mini, the same way Mini obviously is with her at the end of season five, and weaves their differing but complimentary appreciations for one another expertly.

Hello there, kids, I'm Jaye and I'll be behind the wheel of the Skins van this month, so it'll probably be in everyone's best interest to look both ways before crossing the street. Fandom overview soon to come, but I thought I'd start off with a few quick recs before that. I'm going to try my best to keep it balanced between the three generations (with a few cross-gen) and skate across as many genres as I can. There will be het, slash, femslash (a surprisingly large amount of femslash, actually, considering that it's usually a rather pronounced minority) and gen. Hopefully you can find something in there that you'll like. Cheers!

Fandom: SKINS
Pairing: Cassie/Effy (gen 1)
Length: 500 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] kyrafic
Author Website: (fic masterlist here)
Why this must be read: The wonderful sense that this rare!pair makes is already tantalizing in theory, but in practice, this short fic makes it absolutely delicious. The Cassie voice of this author is like something straight out of the show, the word choice, the beautiful stream-of-conciousness sort of narration that flows naturally from beginning to end. It fits brilliantly with Cassie and Effy's brief interaction in 2.07, without really focusing on the two of them, so much as it does Cassie's insane headspace at this point in the show. It's short, but just as long as it needs to be, and well worth the read.
