28th-Sep-2013 01:18 am VID REC - Star Trek: I Will Survive
Fandom: STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION
Song: I Will Survive, performed by Gloria Gaynor, written by Freddie Perren and Dino Fekaris
Length: 3 minutes, 23 seconds
Author Website: Paul Harper on YouTube
Why this must be seen:
This is a fandom classic. Vidding in the 1990's was WAY different than it is now, and in more ways than just the quality (vidding with video cassette tapes was a monstrous job). This video is just fun, with literal juxtapositions of the song lyrics with scenes from the show. There isn't really a narrative story in the vid, but it doesn't need one. This vid (and other vids on the channel, which I also recommend) were shown at a sci-fi themed bar. I think this vid in particular reflects the fandom of 20 years ago -- fun, campy, lovely. Watch it for the blast to the past and for the simple joy it will bring you as you recognize scenes from various episodes of Next Gen.

Why this must be read:
Of course Data has a sexuality once he has the emotion chip! This is a very interesting take on the reaction of some of the crew of the Enterprise when they find out he's gay. Some of them don't deal with it well, and Data's emotions are dealt with extremely well. I love love love Data and Troi's interactions when he goes to her for a counseling session to deal with his anger, confusion, sadness, and fear (which feelings he breaks down into precise percentages, PERFECT).

This is just a lovely gem of a story that touches on big issues from both the show and our modern reality. Good stuff!

Summary: Doctor Bashir, marooned for over six months, is discovered by the Enterprise. Starfleet counted him dead. Section 31 made sure of that. Can he get his life back?

Why this must be read: One thing that intrigued me about DS9 was the idea of Section 31, but the show didn't really show the possible ramifications of such an organization existing - it was touched on, but kind of abandoned. This trilogy takes (in my opinion) a more realistic viewpoint on what they would have done to Bashir after they attempt to recruit him. It also lets us see how other characters in the ST universe would react if they found about about Section 31's existence.

Fandom: STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION/Battlestar Galactica
Pairing: Mostly canon pairings
Length: 156,591 words
Author Website: Rap541 (fanfiction.net)
Summary: What do you do when you're a lost Starfleet officer in the Beta Quadrant? You blend in and hope for the best.

Why this must be read: This story is amazing. It's well-written, well-plotted, handles both sets of characters brilliantly, and includes a ton of background from both series to make the crossover work. You can also read this with minimal knowledge of either show without getting lost.

Basically, one of the characters on the Battlestar is really a very lost Starfleet officer, trying to get home. Once he does, however, things don't really go as expected.

A warning - chapters 65-67 (the last 3 chapters) are really a prequel. They can be read either before or after the main story, it just depends on whether you enjoy being thrown into the story in media res or would prefer a slow buildup. Going Native also has a sequel, which is an ongoing WIP.

Pairing: Scotty/Uhura, Spock
Length: 1555
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] thistlerose
Author Website: AO3
Why this must be read:

One of the things that I love about Star Trek is that while we do get to see the characters at their prime going on deep space missions and being heroic and diplomatic across the galaxy, we also get to see some of the characters' waning years as well. The notable example being Ambassador Spock.  This piece takes place after Bones' funeral where Scotty, who was stuck 75 years in a transporter buffer, runs into Spock.  It's bittersweet and heartbreaking and [livejournal.com profile] thistlerose does a wonderful job of capturing Scotty's and Spock's voices. The grief is palpable and Scotty's love for Uhura shines through.  The sublte details about the scenary, Scotty's inner thoughts and observations of Spock are all a lovely touch.  The fic is somewhat episode related so having knowledge of the TNG episode "Relics" is great but not required.

Why this must be read:
This story is 16 years old, but really good (within the first few paragraphs, there is mention of using a modem... ahh, I don't miss the good old days of fanfic where it took about 5 minutes for me to load a page...). Anyway, this is the first story of a series. The first part of this story is set in the "modern day" world of Highlander and X-Files, while the second part and the next two stories are set in the future world of Star Trek. I absolutely adore the theories that Mulder comes up with for what is going on! It fits so well with the mindset of that show and his character. Guinan is lovely and her interaction with both Joe and Duncan is spot-on. This story has everything: Guinan, the mysterious woman with a knack for listening; an Immortal hunting Duncan McLeod and Joe Dawson helping him out; and Mulder and Scully on the case! The later stories are also worth a read. Good stuff here, highly recommended!

Fandom: DOCTOR WHO/STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION
Pairing: The Doctor (multiple incarnations), Guinan
Length: 5k
Author on LJ: [personal profile] selenak
Author Website:  Master Post, AO3
Why this must be read:

Because it's awesome to watch people try to handle things happening out of the right order due to time travel, and we rarely see that in the show except for the thing with River Song.  Because Guinan is awesome, and wise, and has a surprising amount in common with the Doctor.  Because [personal profile] selenak is a great author and her entry into the most recent [community profile] multiverse5000 challenge doesn't disappoint.

The Doctor and Guinan keep meeting, not quite by accident, and never in the right order for either of them.  Along the way they deal with the destruction of their respective homeworlds, and tea, and home (or Stockholm Syndrome, whichever), and talking oneself into (or out of) things.  And a space wedding.

Fandom: STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION
Pairing: Riker/Troi
Length: 23 000 words
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: Her Riker/Troi fic is archived here
Why this must be read:

One of the reasons Star Trek's Mirror Universe (MU) is so fascinating is the glimpses it gives us of our good guys being unrelentingly bad. Fans were never lucky enough to see the MU filmed with TNG characters, but fiction, both professional and fannish, exists to compensate for this oversight.

"Both Sides of the Mirror" is my favourite take on the TNG MU because of its focus on characters over technology. In it, the Mirror!Riker slowly comes to realize that he's transported into a world very different from his own. As he struggles with this realization, our crew come to learn some very unsettling truths about their Mirror counterparts. It turns out the two Rikers have in fact switched places, and the trouble really starts when the Mirror!Riker finds our existence so comfortable that he refuses to return to his own.

BEKi's Rikers are more fleshed-out and likable than the aired version ever was, and even with the focus on the Riker/Troi relationship, I think this is plotty enough to have gen appeal. Definitely give this a try if you like good plotting, sharp characterizations, and lots and lots of angst.

Pairing: Jean-Luc Picard/Beverly Crusher/Jack Crusher
Length: 2 500 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] yahtzee63
Author Website: Yahtzee's Fic
Why this must be read:

This well-crafted, melancholy story begins in the closing moments of "Attached" but soon fades back to the time of Picard's command of the Stargazer. Jack Crusher, unfortunately, isn't a character who gets a lot of respect in TNG fic, so it's especially nice to see how well he and Beverly get on here. When they try to draw Jean-Luc Picard into their relationship, it's to Yahtzee's credit that it seems like it should be canon, dammit entirely plausible. She does a particularly good job with Picard's characterization, her details of 24th century life help bring this story to life, and there are bonus literary references.

Why this must be read:

Leyenn’s thoughtful, spot-on characterizations place her among my favourite writers in this fandom, and her “Icarus and Psyche” is one of my go-to R/T fixes. Set just after Riker’s father’s visit in S2, this quiet fic sees Riker and Troi having a late-night conversation about, well, lots of things. The dialogue (particularly the early banter) is wonderful, and their relationship is presented as the complicated thing it ought to be at this point in the series.

Why this must be read:

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that characters in possession of a holodeck, must be in want of pornography writers.

This fic is the result of a fandom challenge in which Picard and Crusher carry on an affair that exists only on the holodeck. The characters (and writers) take it in turns to come up with different roles and scenarios.

AdmiralTAG specializes in edgy, character-driven P/C porn, and TtC is no exception. Picard and Crusher may be playing at student and teacher (the fic is set just after “Rascals”), but their real lives have ways of bleeding into their fantasies, whether they want them to or not.

This is set shortly after Ro's arrival on the Enterprise. She attracts the attention of Deanna Troi, who is interested in how Ro is getting along, and just plain interested. “Candlelight” is a desperately bleak AU where romance is a traitor to survival, and where Deanna Troi sets out to seduce not so much a live man, but a dead way of life. 3rd-Jun-2009 09:46 pm Too Many Stars and Not Enough Sky by Kaite (R)
Hi, I’m idella, and I’ll be driving the Star Trek: The Next Generation van this month.

[livejournal.com profile] perclexed did a great overview of TNG in 2003, and to quote Leonard Cohen, nothing much has happened since. We may not have a shiny new movie, but we have lots of shiny fic! (Not nearly enough shiny new fic, mind you, but we have lots of shiny classics that haven't been recc'd here yet.)

You can expect me to showcase mostly canon het, with occasional forays into gen, femslash, and fic that focuses on TNG's female characters. I'm also into angst, plot, and Trek's deliciously twisted Mirror Universe.

On to the recs!

Fandom: STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION
Pairing: Troi/Worf
Length: one-shot
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: You can find more of Kaite's fic here (scroll down)
Why this must be read:

This is one of several stories from Kaite that breathes new life into one of TNG's most underused and underdeveloped characters. (She gets bonus points for taking on one of the show's most unpopular pairings, too.)

Here, Deanna Troi has personality to spare, and she sees through everyone, especially herself. If she were ever to publish a monograph on the sex lives of her colleagues, this would be her snarky brainstorming session.

Why this must be read:

It's a DS9 crossover that doesn't involve Garak, and story that makes Will Riker interesting!  (Nothing wrong with Garak, but just try to find a crossover without him. As for Will Riker ... sorry, Riker fans. If you exist.)

Snark aside, this story perfectly juxtaposes the idealism of TNG with the reality of DS9.  In "Emissary," it's a revealing moment when we learn Sisko won't forgive Picard for Wolf 359.  "Into the Breach" explores the clash of world views when Riker asks Sisko to do just that.

Why this must be read:

The majority of Garak/Bashir fics portray Garak as the dominant partner, while Bashir is cast as the inexperienced newcomer to hot man-on-man action. The First Time reverses these roles, and creates a very different yet utterly believable version of this pairing. Olivia Monteith also captures all of the overwhelming emotions and physical sensations of a 'first time', and balances them with gentle humour and witty dialogue. The result is a poignant and sexy tale of two very different cultures, species and men colliding behind closed doors.

Why this must be read:

Because Rishi Baba is far more than just a hypertext 'choose your own adventure' for adults. It's a story that explores the nature of fantasies and reality, or in this case, realities. Depending on the choices you make, the characters will experience dreams or nightmares, love or betrayal, life or death. Author on LJ: [profile] zakhad
Author Website: A Good Universe Next Door
Why this must be read:

Because [profile] zakhad  is a good enough writer to take a fairly unlikely, unusual pairing (Captain Picard and Counselor Troi), and make you not only believe it's possible but make it seem inevitable. Her stories are beautifully written, tightly plotted, and she has the knack of making all her characters (even the original ones) feel real. This series has two gen short stories during the series itself, and goes AU before the ninth movie, "Insurrection." On an Enterprise which most of their friends have left, Captain Picard and Counselor Troi find themselves drawn together in friendship and something more. It's not an easy path; both have to grow as people and as officers together to make it work. And the Enterprise's usual adventures don't help.

(Also, I appreciate the fact that [profile] zakhad  actually puts some effort into trying to give Counselor Troi an actual code of ethics to accompany her duties as counselor--when I think of some of the utterly unprofessional things the show had her do, I have to cringe. And she also does an excellent job of showing us the inner lives of both Jean-Luc and Deanna, including how Deanna's empathy fits into her relationships with others.)
