Why this must be read:
I wasn't going to do crossover day, but then I remembered all the QL crossovers I love (several of which have already been recced here), and I caved. This is another fic by Azar (really just read all her stuff), and it's everything I want in a QL crossover.

Which is this: Sam goes in, makes a genuine connection with the universe, where everyone's in character, helps something there, but doesn't have a smug authorial-sounding voice about how he knows what's better for everyone and the canon. Here he touches Jack and Sara's lives at a crucial point, and it matters, but in the end, well, you'll see in...

COLONEL DAVE DIXON AND SG-13

To finish out our round of tributes to minor characters, here's a light and humorous piece on SG-13 and their cynical and hilarious leader, Colonel Dixon. I love how this fic shows how blasé the members of the SG teams get about the weirdest stuff. Radioactive hamsters? Robotic sphinxes? Huge ass flying dinosaurs that like to eat paleontologists for lunch? No prob for Dixon and his team. The author has their voices down wonderfully, and I chuckled all the way through.

JENNIFER HAILEY, ELLIOTT, GROGAN, AND SATTERFIELD

This is a really nice reality check for the up-and-comers of the Stargate Program, and it gives us a look into the daily lives of those waiting for the coveted SGA team spots. The ho-hum-ness of TV shows and dinner makes you smile and really relate to Hailey, Satterfield, Grogan, and Elliot. Seeing the reaction of Elliot's contemporaries to his death, the people he trained with and was friends with, was heartbreaking and makes you think of the sacrifices the men and women of the SGA make for our betterment. No age or group is safe in such an operation. Their final salute to heroes leaves you doing some serious thinking.

SHA'RE/SHA'URI

Sha're is beautifully explored in this collection of five vignettes that explore her life and herself as an individual. She's given a strength of character and a deep well of motivation that canon just doesn't deliver. She's more than just the catalyst that got Daniel further into the Stargate program and the fight with the Goa'uld; she's a mature woman who knows how to show defiance and strength just as well as she knows how to love. From the uplifting to the tragic, these looks at Sha're will please and inspire.

SARAH GARDNER

This intimate look at Sarah's road to recovery from being a Goa'uld host zings with sadness, pain, healing, and love. Canon didn't give us any closure at all for her character, so this fic is a huge boon to fans of her character. The author gives us glimpses of what Sarah is going through in her recovery: her re-discovery of the beauty of human touch, the simple pleasure of controlling her own body, overcoming the horrors thousands of years of Goa'uld memories has left on her mind, and finding herself again in a familiar, and yet alien, Earth. [livejournal.com profile] beatrice_otter brings Sarah's struggles to life and rounds out her character into a three-dimensional woman who we can all relate to and cheer for as she re-finds her balance.

COLONEL LIONEL PENDERGAST

This characters is one of those that I'm sure some are going "Who?!" about. He's only in six episodes and even in those he doesn't really have a big part; until that is, he dies which seems to be the way Stargate operates a lot of the times. But, [livejournal.com profile] stringertheory has given us a rich and vivid background to this brave Colonel we barely got to know. We get to learn his background, his motivations, his utter bravery in the face of death, and his never-ending sense of awe at the circumstances and the places in which he finds himeself. He's a man with a heart, a sense of humor, and a sense of purpose in his mission saving those serving under him and others. He's a man to be admired and missed. Author's Summary : Catherine is becoming the kind of person who can spearhead the Stargate program. Susan is looking somewhere new for her answers.

CATHERINE LANGFORD

In this beautiful crossover, Catherine finds herself after Ernest "dies" by going to school and discovering the beauty of physics, knowledge, and independence. So much backstory is packed into this little piece that I felt like I was learning Catherine through and through, her ambitions, her motivation, and her drive. She's a woman with a mind of her own, independent of her father and now dead fiancee, and with goals of her own.

Finding a kindred spirit in a young and damaged Susan Pevensie seems like a match made in heaven. They coalesce into a compatriat-ship/friendship of scientific support. They drive each other in their theories of other worlds and how they both feel differently on how you get there. While my knowledge of The Last Battle is very spotty in the mists of time, I really felt Susan come to life as well. Her pain at losing contact with her family and their attitudes towards her for her decisions. You can feel her drive to try and find them again, no matter the effort needed or the pain involved. One can only hope she eventually gets there.

I really felt this piece form beginning to end. It's a nice exploration of these two intriguing women finding themselves.

Why this must be read: - Blair and Daniel are old friends. At Cheyenne Mountain, Jack is pushing Daniel away; in Cascade, Jim is pushing Blair away. Daniel resigns, but then goes to Cascade to see Blair, because Blair has specialised knowledge that Daniel needs.

This is basically a story about Jim and Jack being over-protective, with Blair and Daniel insisting that they can look out for themselves. The voices are, for me, spot-on.

Dangermouse writes in several fandoms, and doesn't seem to have written Sentinel for some time (pity).

Author's Summary : The CIA has a memorial wall...does the SGC?

GENERAL GEORGE HAMMOND

This man has been an integral part of the Stargate program from almost the get go. He's the grandfatherly head of the SGC, it's military leader who knows what it takes to run a program like this and still stay diplomatic about it. We don't get to see how he deals with those he has lost under his command much in canon. That is what makes this fic so endearing and just felt in the gut. The reader gets a real sense of how deeply Hammond feels the loss of each and every soul, civilian or soldier, alien or human. His sense of responsibility to them shines out as we see how each member of the SGC is remembered. Denise really knows how to draw the reader in with her sparse but extremely vivid writing style. You'll feel this one long after reading.

Why this must be read:
John opened the closed record that Stargate Command had on him and skipped over its content: "Dr John Sheppard, Civilian Consultant to the U.S. Air Force, member of SG-1, PhD in Applied Mathematics and PhD in Computer Science, gifted mathematician with a penchant for stealing, trustworthy." A small, satisfied smirk crooked John's lips. He struck the last part out and added a correction in red: "Gifted thief with a penchant for mathematics, not to trust." He saved the document and erased all traces of his presence in the system. It'd take a while for McKay to figure out that John had found yet another weakness in the SGC network. He ordered pizza and waited for the rest of the SG-1 to arrive. It was Mitchell's turn to pick the movie.

AU- John Sheppard as a chaotic neutral(ish) mathematician genius criminal. Who ends up working for the SGC as Rodney’s math assistant and catches SG-1’s attention, mostly in a friendly way.
It’s an interesting and different take on John Sheppard, one who’s putting all his talents to use and is used to coming out on top. He have to be a little more on his toes when he’s spending time with a mountain fill of geniuses/highly competent people. And Sheppard is mostly in it for the thrills and the payday until he starts making some real friends. Fantastic General O'Neil in this fic as well.

Why this must be read:
Someone is assassinating everyone ever associated with the Stargate program. It’s not just a small number: dozens are dead before the alert even goes up. It’s up to those left to figure out who’s behind the murders and stop them before Earth’s line of defense against invasion is nothing more than a distant memory.

Members of both SG-1 and Atlantis are scrambling to find their friends and loved ones as it seems like one by one, they are all being hunted down and killed. A murder mystery with the cast of the entire rest of the universe as a possibility for the villain, and it seems like the whole world gets thrown into chaos. There are character death of more than just minor characters.
This is an interestingly done genre fic that feels familiar in a comfortable way- cold open, drama, conflict, resolution- you might not get every twist that happens, but the fic takes what works in the medium and uses it.

Why this must be read:
Atlantis wasn't Cam's first choice for reassignment; he probably wasn't Atlantis' first choice for the new expedition leader either. Sometimes you work with what you've got anyway, even if what you've got includes seers, ill-advised rescue missions, replicators, wraith in the city and John Sheppard.

AU where season 4 of SGA takes place with Cam as commander on Atlantis instead of Sam Carter. It's mostly from Cam's POV, who feels entirely out of place and is trying to find his footing at first in a city where is distinctly an outsider to the community that existed there for the 3 years. Cam doesn't have the 10 years of experience at the SGC like Sam did, and his relationship with McKay and Sheppard are different from what her's would have been (McKay especially, who hasn't entirely gotten over the lemon incident), so his approach to action differs from Sam's. Where the differences between events here and in canon are subtle at first, but the developing relationships between all the characters and their slightly different approaches to events lead to different outcomes.

There is an interesting mix of familiar and unfamiliar in this season 4, and there's a a slow building Sheppard/Mitchell here that introduced me to and sold me on the pairing. The writing style really made reading through this fic go a lot faster than I anticipated which is to say that it's great and worked at least for me and hopefully for you.

This is not so much a "fic" as much a script for what Stargate Command's automated answering machine could sound like, in all its utter thoroughness. In which John Sheppard hates cricket and accidentally starts an intramural soccer league, and Cameron Mitchell thinks McKay's sister sucks.
&
In which: John is appalled by SG-1, Cameron is relentlessly cheerful, Jack drinks beer, Teal'c roots for Florida, Sam flirts with Wisconsin fans, Vala tries to show her breasts to basketball players, and Daniel is mostly oblivious to all of it.

Basically, the 2 fics (the 2nd being the sequel) boil down to 'John Sheppard and Cam Mitchell bond over sports'. No actual knowledge of sports seems necessary considering it's pretty much a foreign language for me and it wasn't a bar to enjoying the story. The first part is mostly gen while the sequel comes with the pairing.

'The Towers...' takes place on Atlantic and works really well as a long-distance friendship fic where John finds one of the things he strangely misses most about Earth is access to ESPN. John ends up email-ing back and forth with Cam about college football mostly, but their interactions involve mocking teams and each other, sports news, bitching about soccer, and somehow becoming friends while John sulks about Cam's team stealing John's team's coach. Meanwhile, we get to see a community building in Pegasus that goes beyond the explore+survive nature of the show. It's a nice chance to see characters making Atlantis feel a little more like home and John connecting with someone over non-Atlantis related topics.

The sequel involved John on earth going to games with the entirety of SG-1. There is some hilarious SG-1 team bonding and mocking, a lot of drinking, and a really comfortable dynamic between John and Cam that works for the actual laid back sides of their personality that comes through.

Not all the SGC's psychologists are stupid.

If the Stargate program is throwing everything the sciences know about the work on its head, why should psychology be any different? For one psychologist working under Cheyenne Mountain, her days involve dealing with patients run into issues of “DID” (goa'uld infestation), exposure to mind altering substances (sex pollen) and breakdowns in public by servicemen. Her shopping list really says it all.

This fic is made up of mostly OC’s (with a brief mention of a Dr. Keller), and manages to work a lot of world building into so little space- mainly emails, letters, and session notes. Plus, it’s pretty hilarious.

There is also a fantastically deadpan podfic version of the fic at the top of the link that works just as well if not better than the text version. It's mostly because of the inflections.

Dira knows how to reel your emotions in and keep them front and center; this story delivers on that. Why this must be read:

Author's Summary: Charlie Kawalsky and Samantha Carter are astonished at the differences they find in this perfect alternate reality where their friends are alive and the Goa'uld attack has been averted. After they return home, they are faced with the enormous task of rebuilding Earth's failed defenses and they know they need to make some changes. Number one on their list..recruit Daniel Jackson.

This is one of those stories that is truly among the best that Stargate SG-1 ficcage can offer. It builds on the Season 3 episode "Point of View" in an extremely intriguing way. Not only do we get to explore that episode through the eyes of alterate!Kawalsky (a truly unique and gratifying POV), we get to see how his reality starts to rebuild after the defeat of the Goa'uld. Redbyrd explores the impact of this utterly defining event, the way society is reshaped, how people take such a explosive revealing of the Stargate program, and we get to see how slowly, and at times jarringly, Earth starts to rebuild both itself and their Stargate program.

And yet, Redbyrd still keeps the story intimate as she explores the impact of this episode's events on Kawalsky, his Sam, his Daniel, and the others from his reality. Among the epic missions and rebuilding, we get scenes like friends relaxing over conversation and a friendly glass of brandy. We end the fic with a feeling that this reality is headed in the right direction with a bright future all around. For a fic that revolves around a completely alternate reality than the one we know, the reader is rivited to every word and utterly wants to know the outcome for our alternate team.

The reason she is brought into the Stargate program is genius and dealt with in a manner that brings depth to her character and gives us a view into the future of the program itself. This is one of my favorite Stargate SG-1 fics hands down. With engaging characters (both original and SG1 characters), a very tense plot and struggle for survival, in-depth examination of loss, and an emotional pull that sucks you in fast, this fic engaged me multiple times and for hours on end.

Tiv'ester gets the perspective of the SNAFU situation developing from multiple viewpoints without losing the intimacy she has for these characters. She's able to balance the epic and the up-close-and-personal with deft skill. I literally had tears in my eyes as we got to see the rapidly deteriorating situation with Daniel's group struggling for survival and the other groups from Earth are oblivious till so close to the end. This is definitely a fic that will keep you on the edge of your seat and your brain engaged to the last word. This gem of a crossover features Stiles as a linguist with the SGC, Lydia as a physicist and Derek as a Luceren (shape-shifting alien) diplomat. The whole fic is fantastic and the voice is hilarious. Teen Wolf fans will love seeing the perfect ways the cast fits into the SGC. For Stargate fans, the fic is full of in-jokes that had me laughing out loud (including bullet-proof lab tables for the inevitable shoot-outs). But my favourite part was the Luceren culture, which is developed in a way I wish werewolf culture was on the show, and Stiles translating Derek’s body language (in both wolf and human form). The exploration of this culture and the development of Stiles’ relationship with Derek is framed by an action-filled Replicator take-over of the base that could be an episode of either show.

15th-Feb-2013 08:29 am Puzzle Pieces by Lady Ra (adult)
Fandom: THE SENTINEL, SG1
Pairing: Jim/Blair, Jack/Daniel
Length: 45150 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] ladyra
Author Website: http://www.visionsofprettyboys.com/
Why this must be read: - This story involves two universes. In universe A, Jack and Blair have both died; in universe B, a universe where sentinels are known about, Daniel and Jim have died. Jack and Blair (who works for SGC in universe B) find a way to get into A...

Although the development seems at first sight a little far-fetched, it does use Stargate canon.

Lady Ra has been recced here several times, and rightly so. This is another of her many successes. Basically she takes some aspect of each character and develops them according to those aspects, making two completely different, yet recogniseable, Jims, Blairs, Jacks and Daniels.

The story is available in PDF, Epub and mobi formats as well as HTML.

31st-Jan-2013 07:11 pm Chaos Theory by nanda, PG-13
Fandom: STARGATE SG-1
Pairing: Sam/Other, Sam/Jack
Length: 1832 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] nandamai
Author Website: http://nandamai.livejournal.com/
Why this must be read:

One of nanda's hallmarks is her ability to write Sam and Jack as realistic people, actual grown adults who have this thing between, but aren't consumed by it, as awkward as it sometimes gets. People who in fact had and have lives and relationships that don't include each other. Here she brings in a (likeable and well-fleshed-out) OC male friend-with-benefits of Sam's from grad school, and Jack finds out about them. And there's none of the melodramatic childish jealousy or out-of-proportion unrealistic expectations of broken commitments that would usually follow this scenario in most S/J fic. An utterly refreshing and sweet story with fantastic Sam characterization.

This is Sha're's story, but one in which Sam is a solid presence, and Sha're's recovery from Amaunet's possession brings out Sam's own demons. And a bonus tentative, beautiful friendship between these two very different women.

28th-Jan-2013 10:38 am Bird Stealing Bread by Jennghis Kahn, R
Fandom: STARGATE SG-1
Pairing: Sam/Jack, Sam/Pete
Length: 5930 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] surrealphantast
Author Website: http://surreallis-fic.livejournal.com/
Why this must be read:

Classic stranded-on-another planet, but this time with a twist - It's not just Sam and Jack who get stuck. Jenn takes a somewhat unbelievable premise and makes it an awkward, uncomfortable and utterly believable story about three people forced to confront two relationships that never devolves into caricature, cliche or melodrama, as most stories involving these three characters do.

Why this must be read:

This is such a perfect Sam Carter story, about her life a few years down the road, her relationships, her work, the decisions and choices she's made and how they define her world, from the first time she stepped through the gate until now, when she stands as the public face of the program.
