Musical artist: I think he wrote it himself
Pairing:  None
Vidder on LJ: none known.
Vidder's website:  http://www.itsjustsomerandomfansite.com/
Why this vid kicks ass:

When Batman and Iron Man get together to discuss sequels, Iron Man reveals a unique way to respond to his critics and explain the bigger
picture for his company's (as well as other company's) film slate.  (Marvel/DC/Mac/PC Parody/Review )

This guy has done a ton of vids, spoofing the Marvel and DC movieverses using the Mac/PC commercial format.  They're good vids, but far and away the best one is this one, which turns into a musical of Iron Man explaining the Marvel movie strategy to Batman, while Superman tries to defend the DC movies.  It's hilarious, partly because it's so true.  The more you know about comic book movies the funnier it is, but my parents who know almost nothing about comic book movies still enjoyed it.

Well this is the last rec I have for you guys this month. I've really enjoyed my turn at the wheel and I hope you've enjoyed at least some of the fics I've recced here.

Fandom: DCU- Superman Returns

Length: 3,895

Why this must be read:

I'm a huge fan of stories that take extraordinary events, in this case, Superman's hospitalization at the end of SR and look at them through the eyes of the average person. The feelings and thoughts of the two people presented in this amazing fic are so real and honest that it literally feels like you're in their heads as they try and deal with what's going on. When I read this fic the first thing I did was make it an eBook and put it on my iPhone so I could read it any time I need a pick-me-up. It's that good.

30th-Jan-2010 06:34 pm VID REC: DCU: Superman- The Lois Lane Song
Vidder: margotgabriele
Musical Artist: Unknown (If you do know who sang it, please comment!)
Pairing: Clark/Lois
Vidder on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] kalalanekent
Vidder's website: YouTube Profile
Why this vid kicks ass:

I'm not a huge fan of four minute long vids that are just a love song and a ship. I don't have the patience for them. Fortunately this vid manages to be short, entertaining, shippy and makes you laugh. The song itself is amusing (unfortunately not even the vidder knows where it's from) but the clips put to the music really make it feel like the singer could have seen the vid first then sung the song to fit it instead of the other way around.

In short: the Clois relationship in one, easy to swallow, very entertaining video.

Why this must be read:

It's really the little touches in this story that make it a great read. Through the eyes of Jason Lane's teacher we get to see the aftermath the events of the movie have had on a five year old child. I don't know what more I can say about this oneshot except it's such a wonderful fic to read. It leaves you feeling happy and comforted by the fact that there are good people in the world. So if you want a happy feeling to keep you through the day then this is the fic for you.

Fandom: DCU- Superman Returns
Pairing: Implied Richard/Lois & Clark/Lois
Length: Four fics of about 1,300 words each
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] darth_stitch

Why this must be read:

This scene (from four different perspectives) would have been really cool in the movie- But there's no way a movie could have captured the thoughts and feelings of the characters in such and incredible and realistic way.

When you read these fics feels like you're reading the character's minds. The little things they see and sometimes don't even know they see. A must read in the fandom- just look at the number of reviews each one of these short little oneshots have gotten.

Why this must be read:

I love reading fics from different points of veiw than the norm. Sometimes, no matter how good the fic is, you do get tired of the same characters over and over again. This fic is pretty much everything I'd been looking for in a multiple perspective story. It tells the story of the aftermath of the movie from many different points of veiw- if the title hadn't clues you in already (seven to be exact).

While the plot isn't too original when you think hard about it, the way of telling the story is so interesting you don't even realize. The author manages to get into the heads of the characters so well you feel as if you're actually there int eh story feeling what they feel and seeing what they see.

5th-Jan-2010 10:19 pm Searching For Clark Kent by Wahoogal06 (M)
Hey, I’m [livejournal.com profile] repmetsyrrah, and I’ll be you DCU reccer for January. I’m an avid reader of the comics but my fanfic tastes lean more towards the movieverse- mostly the Superman movies and I’m a die-hard clois fan so that’s what you’re likely to see the most of this month. However I do have a few other ones to keep it interesting.

Fandom: DC- Superman Returns
Pairing: Clark/Lois
Length: ~ 200,000 words
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website: Wahoogal06 on FF.Net
Why this must be read:

Hope I’m not being too ambitious starting with an epic but in my opinion this is one of the very best fics by one of the very best authors in this little corner of the fandom. I know fans were divided over the latest movie but this fic takes a realistic look at the aftermath of Superman Returns as well as having an extremely original plot to weave it into.

One of the few fics I've read where I almost haven't been able to believe what the author's doing with the characters. She puts them through so much and pushes them right to the edge of but she does it so well and believably that you won't be able to help but read on. The first of a five-part series of which three are completed, this is a fantastic fic if you want something to really sink you teeth into.

Pairing: Jason Lane (Kon-El)/Tim Drake (Robin III)
Length: 22,496 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] hackthis
Author Website: dysfunctional
Why this must be read:
I was absolutely amazed to see this story has never been rec'ed here. Jason "Kon-El" Lane goes to Gotham University where he meets the boy of his dreams, Robin - no, Tim Drake. An examination of identity, self-definition and acceptance of others, "The Way I Was Made" is set following SUPERMAN RETURNS canon with Smallville backstory, yet is firmly planted in the DC Universe. Although Zahra successfully weaves the differing Superman canons together, the story is thought provoking, moving and HOT even without the reader knowing the characters or their histories. It's one of the first stories I read in this fandom and it is as rewarding on re-read as it is compelling the first time.

Fandom: DC COMICS
Pairing: Richard White
Length: Vignette
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] likeadeuce
Author Website: Buffy/Angel fics by character, Buffy/Angel fics by timeline and spoiler, X-Men and other comics stories
Why this must be read:

Because Richard White was an awesome character, beautifully played by James Marsden. But given the dynamics of the Superman Returns fandom, he's usually seen solely as an obstacle to Superman and Lois. At best, his character is there only as Jason's step-father and Lois' fiance, with no real agency of his own. This short piece by [livejournal.com profile] likeadeuce takes the glimpses we have of his life in the movie and turns them into a plausible, intriguing look at who he is and what got him to the Daily Planet as an editor for his uncle.

23rd-Mar-2008 01:29 am In the Shadow of My Father by Alphie (PG-13)
Fandom: DC COMICS
Pairing: Lois/Richard, Superman, Jaso
Length: ten chapters
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] alphielj
Author Website: http://alphielj.livejournal.com/tag/fan+fic
Why this must be read:

Because Alphie does a beautiful, realistic, heartbreaking job of laying out what happens to a relationship built on misunderstandings, half-truths, and lies of omission. And all you have to do is take the situation at the end of Superman Returns, assume Clark is as bad at talking with people as he always is, and project things fifteen years into the future.

At the end of Superman Returns, five-year-old Jason knows that Superman is Clark Kent, but neither his mother Lois nor his step-father Richard do. He's kept that secret ever since. In fifteen years, his biological father Superman never told Jason he loves him. Superman hadn't tried to be a father to him, and seemed disappointed in how human Jason is. Jason responded by growing angry and resentful, and cutting off all contact. Now, he's about to get married, and to make things work with the woman he loves, he has to deal with his relationship with his father.

Pairing: Richard/Lois, Clark/Lois, Scott/Jean
Author on LJ: [profile] xenokattz
Author Website: Katt's Aerie
Why this must be read:
Most crossovers that use the gimmick of the same actor playing characters in two shows end up as just that--gimmicks.  They depend on weird coincidences or double lives or identical twins who somehow were separated at birth.  It almost never works.

This one does.

This story (actually, it's two stories and a vignette) crosses Superman Returns with the X-Men Movieverse based on the fact that James Marsden played both Scott Summers and Richard White.  In this story Richard suffers an aneurysm, which leaves him with persistent hallucinations of a school for mutants.  Meanwhile, Scott Summers finds himself trapped in Richard's head, with no idea how he got there or how to call his fellow mutants for help.  This story is about them learning to live with what's happened, and move on with their lives, together.  It's beautifully written, and sometimes you're not sure who you're dealing with (Richard or Scott).  But that's okay, because sometime they're not sure, either.

Pairing: Lois/Superman, Lois/Richard
Length: medium length one-shot.
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] trollprincess
Author Website: Memories
Why this must be read:
For some reason, way too many people who try to write Lois Lane make her either whiny or a bitch. She's neither. What she is, is a smart, strong, tough woman who can take care of herself but still has a heart. [livejournal.com profile] trollprincess captures her beautifully in this character study that explores the time between Superman II and Superman Returns, as Lois deals with the fact that her lover disappeared, and that she's pregnant with an alien child. This story lets her be real, and vibrantly alive. Wonder of wonders, this story also lets Richard be the nice guy he is in the movie, without turning him into a jerk for horning in on Superman's girl.

Why this must be read:

Okay, I admit it, she got the idea for this one from a plot-bunny I released into the wild. I swear I'm not biased, you really need to read this one any way. She portrays the movieverse Superman characters perfectly, while managing to make Clark just a little bit more alien than he is in the movies, and watching the consequences unfold from there. The writing is dry and droll, yet still evocative at critical moments.

4th-Mar-2008 08:38 am Father, who Art in Heaven by Imadra Blue (PG)
Fandom: DC COMICS
Pairing: none
Length: 4.5k words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] imadra_blue
Author Website: just about everything is at the Archive
Why this must be read:

While Smallville is dominated by slashers, the Superman fandom has a very strong het contingent, mostly focused on Superman/Lois Lane. After Superman Returns, with its love triangle--Lois Lane has a fiance named Richard White with whom she is raising Superman's son Jason--a lot of people wrote stories in which Richard died, was understanding and left so Lois could be with Superman, or turned into a jerk so Lois could dump him for Superman without guilt. None of which Richard deserves, because he's a genuinely good guy.

Imadra didn't do that. This is about Superman, and Richard, and fatherhood, and accepting the way things are even if it's not the way you want them to be. It's a lyrical character study with a bittersweet ending.

Title: Echoing Street Signs
Pairing: Richard/Chloe
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] familyarchives
Author Website: The Peach Tree
Why this must be read:

Every now and then, I consider the character of Chloe Sullivan and the HUGE smack in the romantic face she's got coming. She thought the matter of Lana was harsh? All she has to do is wait. It's inevitable.

In this story you'll find the aftermath and it hits that tiny, uncharitable feeling every Chloe fan probably has somewhere in her. The "how the hell can they *DO* it to her" and when it hits that feeling, you double it because, yes, Richard's in for more of the same. This story just *NAILS* that feeling. The little irrational flare of pissed off that's as inevitable as the cause. Most days I'm happy to ignore that inevitability and play in AU or with other pairings or what have you...

Other days I want this. This story, that anger, that bitterness. Because yeah.

It's for that reason that I LOVE this story. It hits a visceral place and it's one I needed.

Pairing: Lois/Superman
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] bijoux
Author Website: none
Why this must be read: This is a Lois Lane you can believe in: hardbitten reporter, madly in love, merciless on herself, blind to Clark (for the most part). The byplay between the lovers is wonderful, but it's the anchoring character of Lois Lane that makes this short story work its magic on the reader.

Why this must be read: Jason's one of the new characters introduced in Superman Returns and he occupies an important role in many relationships. Here it's the unacknowledged father and son dynamic that plays so well off of Clark Kent's alienation. Jason's a kid, being a kid, and Clark just can't resist a chance to connect more closely with his son. This story takes that moment and runs with it in a way that will tug at your heartstrings.

Why this vid kicks ass: It broke my heart to be able to only rec one Superman movieverse vid. There are many great ones out there, especially for this song. Why this must be read: Another seasonal story from the [livejournal.com profile] 12days_of_clois community. Superman Returns is predicated on the hero's five year absence from Earth and, consequently, the life of Lois Lane (and, later, her son, Jason). What happens when, after his return and reconciliation with Lois, Clark tries to make up for five years of missed Christmas? There are trips around the globe (and to Smallville, of course!) but the most important journey is that of the heart. This story, set in [livejournal.com profile] htbthomas' Déjà Vu universe, is a perfect, sweet holiday treat.

Why this must be read: I'm going to take the run-up to the holidays as a theme and promote some of the great fic that's been appearing this month at the [livejournal.com profile] 12days_of_clois community. Superman Returns is amply represented by some talented writers, including several who are taking a break from their ongoing epics to put on some festive cheer. This story's a great example of that. Set in community creator [livejournal.com profile] bistyboo1974's "Life Belongs to the Living" universe, "Winter Light" takes up the story of Lois, Clark and Jason preparing for and spending their first Christmas as a family. Touching but not cloying, romantic yet not sentimental, this is a wonderful exploration of what might yet be. . . .

Why this must be read: This story's all about family and that's a wonderfully domestic take on the aftermath of Superman Returns. Why this must be read: Although the Superman movies are ostensibly about the superhero, it's the character of Lois Lane around who much of the story revolves. How does Lois deal with Superman's disappearance? There's a big question the movies left largely unanswered. Here, the author lets you in on Lois' secret. She's a woman who veers between absurdly applying white-out to his photograph and morbidly contemplating her health as her life takes ever stranger turns. Lois Lane's story may be blackly comic at times but it always rings true to the character.

Why this must be read: Good sex is all about engaging the mind, right? Then this psychological examination of Superman's emotional relationship with Lois Lane is very, very good. In this six-part series, [livejournal.com profile] bodeewan constructs a believable back-story that heightens the romantic tension between a man who's attracted to a woman, but fearful of the consequences of giving in to that emotion, and a woman who has to revise her "full steam ahead" philosophy in order to make a real connection with the man she loves. The intimate encounter slowly unfolds as they each struggle with their insecurities and presuppositions in a compelling, emotionally honest manner.

Why this must be read: The triangle (quandrangle? polygon!) that ensues in Superman Returns with Lois Lane, engaged to Richard, while coping with the return of her former lover and all unawares of his secret identity could be fodder for cheesy excess. Instead, [livejournal.com profile] thedeadparrot treats all the characters respectfully, painting an emotionally realistic picture of the fallout. Best of all, this story meets the difficult challenge of showing Lois falling for the bumbling but true blue Clark Kent. Surprised? So was I, but pleasantly so as the story sets that pairing up in such a way that you can believe it, every step of the way.

You'll Believe a Man Can Fly

Superman Movies: The Background
In 1978, the Superman franchise made a memorable leap to the big screen. With four films airing up through 1987 and a Supergirl spin-off, the Superman movies left an indelible mark on popular culture. Conforming to the pre-Crisis conventions of the DC universe (which considered Superman the "real character" and Clark the alter-ego), Superman battled a range of movie villains while also wrestling with a complicated love life. The first film laid out Superman's origin story and introduced the hero's amazing powers to the grateful citizens of Metropolis and his love interest, Lois Lane ("You've got me? Who's got you?"). In subsequent movies, other familiar franchise characters appear (General Zod, Lana Lang) as well as some more uneven, original characters (Gus Gorman, Nuclear Man).

In 2006, the franchise revived under the direction of Bryan Singer (The Usual Suspects, X-Men). Superman Returns )
