Why this must be read:

This short, jab-punch-jab-rhythmed, SEXY fic is just the thing for those who want to understand the appeal of Lydia/Peter, but don't want to be traumatized by it. (Especially if that trauma is induced by bad writing.) This Lydia isn't traumatized, either. She's over it. She is a warrior. In a legitimate way that expresses her very canon meanness and cunning. She is no example of faux girl power.

This fic deserves your attention for this image alone:

She stockpiles weapons in her parents’ garden shed, lets Peter get on his knees for her there one morning before school. Afterward, he straightens out her dress with gentle hands. His mouth is still shiny and slick when he kisses her goodbye.

I mean . . . the symmetry and metaphor and contradiction all wrapped up in that one image is just . . . precious. Not in the condescending sense, but in the sense that it is something to treasure.

This fic was written well before S3, but it dovetails nicely with where Lydia's mindset is right now.

Why this must be read:

[Sneaking this rec in while I still can, since crack_van is coming to an end (::sobs::).]

Don't let that rating fool you. This fic contains very little outright violence, contains no rape or sex. But what it does contain is the unrelenting assualt against the mind a living nightmare can inflict on you. For Lydia Martin, Peter Hale is literally that living nightmare. What makes this fic stand out is the fact the author doesn't shy away from the true horror of Lydia's situation when Peter was using her as a catalyst for coming back from the dead. This is a Lydia POV that goes DEEP into her psyche as she tries with everything she has (all of which is controlled by Peter) to fight him off if only in the smallest of gestures. Because Lydia is canonically so smart, we get to see every mannerism of Peter's dissected with a scalpel's precision.

But flesh_and_bone_telephone doesn't stop there. Because relegating Peter to a category of beast of cunning brutality would be too simple. And Peter is anything but simple. He's probably the most complicated character on TW. The author's Peter is obsessed with Lydia's hair, seemingly for the perverse reason that it reminds him of his greatest enemy, fire. This Peter is intrigued by Lydia's intelligence and perversely praises and uses her inner strength even as he shreds it to ribbons.

But even stopping there would be too simple, Read more )

1st-Dec-2013 12:00 am Informed Mistakes series by Febricant (Explicit)
Fandom: TEEN WOLF
Pairing: Chris Argent/Peter Hale + a little Derek Hale/Stiles Stilinski in the first part
Length: first part is 13028 words, second is 1512
Author on LJ: tumblr: http://febricant.tumblr.com
Author Website: http://archiveofourown.org/users/Febricant/pseuds/Febricant
Why this must be read:

The "Informed Mistakes" series is really two connected Peter POV stories that could stand apart, but each make the other richer. The first part, "It's Bad Enough We Get Along", starts out pretty bleak in tone as Peter slowly regains and maintains a level of control of himself, all while silently cataloguing everything he's lost. He takes it upon himself to pick up Derek's slack and maneuver the Beacon Hills kids into a functioning pack, complete with a truce with the Argents, in his "special" Peter way. Easier said than done, of course. Though Peter exercises a great deal of restraint, he is far from domesticated. As Chris angrily says to Peter: "You're not as defanged as everyone seems to think you are."

It's a strange duality of behaviors that Peter exhibits, using his own brand of logic. He nudges Derek into lessons in restraint, while Peter himself is constantly goading and molding Chris into someone he can be unrestrained with. The first part of the series can be summed up with this excerpt: The thing is, everything here is beginning to chafe now that the house is restored, now that the pack is solidifying. Peter's got a great deal of self-control but a limited willingness to restrain himself. He'll always be tied here in a way, but he doesn't truly need to stay now that he's left pieces of himself to hold his place.

The second part of the series is "Shedding All My Old Regrets". It is much shorter, but has a faster, more taut rhythm. Chris and Peter leave Beacon Hills and embark on an extended bloodlust- and just plain lust-fueled roadtrip that features them in a constant pattern of slaying-and-fucking, fucking-and-leaving. They take turns ditching each other in sleazy motel rooms after nights of vicious, not-quite-hatesex, only to pick each other's trails up again in the pursuit of more monsters. They kill, they fight, they fuck, rinse and repeat in a savage kind of beauty and almost-romance.

This is pro-level writing with a perfect ending that is already one of my favorite Chris Argent tropes, and tropes in general, in the TW fandom.

30th-Nov-2013 10:59 pm SERIAL KILLER ON THE PHONE by Rrrowr (Mature, by my own estimate)
Fandom: TEEN WOLF
Pairing: Peter Hale/Stiles Stilinski
Length: two short tumblr entries
Author on LJ: none, as far as I know
Author Website: http://archiveofourown.org/users/Rrrowr/
and her TW fic tag on tumblr: http://rrrowr.tumblr.com/tagged/my%20teen%20wolf%20fic
Why this must be read:

This is a Stiles POV with a fantastic premise, brilliant in its creepy simplicity that fits Peter to a T. An anon prompted Rrrowr with this gem: ...what if stiles wants to order a pizza late one night like he’s studying for finals but it’s so late that he misdials and a man picks up and he’s like “oh sorry wrong number” and hangs up real quick but then the guy calls him back and talks to him and after a few minutes of creepyweird convo stiles can hear this screaming in the background and peter is a serial killer and he interrupted him and now every time peter murders someone he calls stiles.

To which Rrrowr completes the thought with: ...the real question would be if Stiles likes it too. He probably shouldn’t, to be honest. He’s the son of the sheriff, after all. He should try to do the right thing and tell someone or something — his dad at the very least.

Peter and Stiles never actually meet in person, but they certainly leave their respective marks on each other. Stiles is simultaneously held hostage emotionally by the mysterious caller and serving as conflicted enabler. This is a fun, angst-free (well, if you're anything like me and are the type of person who watches Dexter to cure bouts of depression), viciously friendly little bit o' pyschological cat-and-mouse. It's just the thing if you're feeling mean and dangerous and want to safely exorcise the demon inside.

Fandom: TEEN WOLF
Pairing: Chris Argent/Peter Hale
Length: 592 words
Author on LJ: none that I know of
Author Website: http://archiveofourown.org/users/postcardmystery/pseuds/postcardmystery
Why this must be read:

Chris Argent has become one of my favorite TW characters; every season he just gets more and more complex. It is fascinating to watch his ever-evolving, ever-shifting allegiances onscreen. Besides Allison, he's the only Argent with a true moral compass. It is that dark-but-honorable mentality that has always separated him from Kate, Gerard, and Victoria. "guns & drums" expresses these traits in a way that feels like Chris gradually coming to terms with who he is in his heart-of-hearts. Which leads to a fantastic, thrilling perspective on Peter. Peter and Chris rightly regard each other as the truly dangerous ones to watch out for, rather than the "kids" of Teen Wolf. A scarily competent, complex Chris Argent is in full force here, especially when slashed with Peter Hale. Basically, two great vicious tastes, that taste even better and more vicious together.

postcardmystery's fic has a rhythm that is almost poetic or musical, which is fitting, given the title. Its blunt, but not heartless style suits the Chris POV perfectly. I won't spoil the ending, but will just say it is delightfully fitting.

Read "guns & drums and guns & drums and the enemy never slew you":
You watch and you wait and you sharpen your axe, and if someone’s afraid of the big bad wolf, it sure as shit isn’t you.

Fandom: TEEN WOLF
Pairing: listed as one-sided Peter/Stiles, Peter/Lydia, & Peter/Isaac, but reads more the first pair imo
Length: 1107 words
Author on LJ: none, as far as I know
Author Website: http://archiveofourown.org/users/joanses/pseuds/deerie
Why this must be read:

First, I have to apologize for the ridiculously late start. I'm just now clear of a nasty sinus infection that led me to keep putting this off due to general misery. The upside is that I noticed a huge dearth of Peter Hale recs on crack_van and I am here to remedy that. I love Derek/Stiles as much as the next guy, but I am constantly frustrated by the challenge of finding well-written yet still enjoyable (to me) TW fics that revolve around a pairing that isn't that one. Aside from Stiles, Peter is my faaavorite -- which I'm sure says a lot about me. He's kinda like my TW Krycek (the little black dress). I'll read him paired up with pretty much anyone. I'm gonna have to spam you guys some with the TW recs, but it's all in the interest of not depriving you of a full quota.

On to the rec: "paint a vulgar picture" is a deceptively simple concept of Peter Hale dabbling in digital photography. Some cultures have feared the danger of the soul being captured by the camera lens, but it seems deerie manages the reverse (inverse?) as well here. Every time Peter takes another series of photos, more of his soul is revealed. "paint..." is a Peter POV, which is a POV I could happily exist in for a long time. I guess there's something wrong with me, 'cause I wasn't nearly as creeped out by his/her Peter as (s)he was, judging by the author notes. This was a beautifully (gorily, at times) written set of character studies of both Peter and the people he studies. There are fascinating pyschological insights sprinkled throughout that show how perceptive a creature Peter is. He may be arguably insane, but his insanity is a clear-eyed, self-aware kind that he is just as capable of aiming at himself as well as the world. Which makes him uniquely dangerous.

17th-Nov-2013 12:43 am Welcome to Night Vale/Teen Wolf, by HalfFizzbin and otter (PG)
Title: Full Moon Radio
Pairing: Gen
Length: currently two episodes, each approximately 2,000 words/15 to 20 minutes
Authors on LJ: unknown
Authors’ Websites: HalfFizzbin on Tumblr, Soundcloud, and on AO3; otter on tumblr and on AO3
Notes: Spoilery for the first half of season three of Teen Wolf
Why this must be read (and heard):

The moon is round tonight, yellow and full, so close and so bright. Perhaps you're thinking, wasn't the moon full last night? And the night before that? And didn't I hear some mysterious howling? We don't talk about the howling. Don't say anything about the howling. But you're right about the moon. The moon was full last night. And last week. And the week before that. The moon is always full, here. Welcome to Beacon Hills.

In this clever mash-up, events from Teen Wolf are reported in the style of Welcome to Night Vale, complete with music. Otter has sly fun highlighting the TV show’s mounting body count and the absurdities of the ostensibly “realistic” setting (seriously, what’s the deal with that abandoned shopping mall?), and the material is admirably served by HalfFizzbin’s sardonic delivery.

The series is ongoing, but the episodes work as standalone pieces.

And this will be my last rec of the month. I wish I'd been able to rec more but grad school + free time don't always mix! Still, I hope you enjoyed the fics and that the variety was as good as I tried to make it. Now, without further ado . . .

Length: 15,800+
Author on LJ: Unlisted
Author Website: AO3
Why this must be read: Yes, you read that pairing correctly. And since my goal this month was to include as many various pairings as possible, I thought it only fitting to end with a fic that literally ships all the things.

This fic follows Derek's discovery not only of what his pack gets up to in private and sometimes semi-public places, but of how he fits into the dynamic. What I appreciate most about this fic, and what makes me love it so much, is that it truly does allow Derek the room to grow. This was written pre-S3 so the depth of Derek's issues weren't quite known to us, but it still takes a look at his reluctance to enter into a relationship and in particular, a complicated tangle of emotions and people that could ruin his pack. The fact that there's an actual adult conversation (or intervention, depending on how you want to look at it) gives one the sense that they can really do this. This is for the best. It's all gonna work out.

At once a little awkward, a lot sexy, and cute as hell, this fic takes all the things I love most about poly ships and makes me laugh, too. Hopefully it can do the same for you.

Length: 37,500+ words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] shetiger
Author Website: AO3
Why this must be read: So, I'm finally reccing something of length. It also happens to be 37,000 words of pure porn. Then again, pure porn might be underselling what is actually a lovely look at not only Stiles, but everyone he has these intimate interactions with, the basic premise being that, after Boyd invites Stiles to join him and Erica for a threesome on her birthday, the rest of the pack (and Danny) finds out and decides to jump on that train before it leaves the station.

What amazes me the most about this fic isn't that it's blisteringly hot (even though it's BLISTERINGLY hot), it's that the author manages to reveal so much about each character through what they're like in bed. And they're all fantastically in character. It has one of my favorite portrayals of Isaac, in particular, as well as delightful dynamics within the couples. The sex is playful and educational and comes free of judgment or bias, there's a bisexual character enjoying the full spectrum of his sexuality, there's communication (and, between Derek and Stiles in particular it's a lovely negotiation of what they want), and above all there's friendship.

Though Derek/Stiles is presumed to be the endgame by the last chapter, this is really a story about Stiles and his sexual exploration and his relationship with the pack. It's an insightful look at casual sex and friend-sex and feelings-sex and the differences between them. And did I mention it's hot?

Musical Artist: "Run This Town" (amended album version) by Jay-Z, Rihanna, and Kanye West

Why this must be viewed: There are some pretty amazing Teen Wolf vids out there and a lot of my favorites are either shippy or Stiles-centric (some funny, some not). These are all awesome, but I really wanted to rec an ensemble vid. Many of my faves only include scenes through S2 and I wanted something a little more recent, so I chose this fantastic vid for you guys.

From the crisp editing to the fantastic song choice, Whisper of Dreams' first (but not last!) Teen Wolf vid is the kind of piece that reminds me of how much sexy-wild-violent fun this show can be. And it celebrates just how badass my faves are. Definitely check this one out!

P.S. Most of the vid involves a pulsing effect that may be a little tough on the eyes and many of the cuts are quick so please be careful if you're sensitive to these kinds of effects.

Pairing: Lydia Martin/Cora Hale
Length: 3800+ words

Why this must be read: Sure, Teen Wolf may be the kind of show where the question isn't "which characters have chemistry" but "which characters don't have chemistry", but some sizzle just a little more than others. Cora and Lydia are two such characters.

Set sometime after S3a in a future where Derek and Cora are back in Beacon Hills, this is a little peek at What Could Be. With Stiles and Derek gone for a while, it's up to Lydia, Cora, and company to handle the monster of the week. But, like Lydia says, anything Stiles Stilinski can do, she can do better and in heels. Of course, not everything goes according to plan but it all works out in the end.

What I love about this fic is that it doesn't water Lydia or Cora down. They're still the BAMFs we know and love in canon and the way they come together feels inevitable in the best way. It's also nice to see a Lydia who's come into her powers and get a closer look at Cora and what motivates her. And, of course, any time two awesome ladies get to be sexy together, I'm there.

There isn't too much Cora/Lydia fic out there yet (as far as I can tell, though the tumblr gifsets are amazing), which is a travesty. But enjoy this little gem and then encourage fandom to give us more!

Why this must be read: Since some amazing Derek/Stiles fics have already been recced here, when picking my own to share with you I'm trying to go a little outside of the box. In this case, I'm reccing a story that's not so much about Derek and Stiles as it is about the pack.

This is another fic set post-S2 and, therefore, AU to S3 in the best ways. If you weren't in the fandom back then, you missed out on a very hopeful time in fic during which Boyd and Erica were present and happy, the pack was a family, and nobody had been cursed with an eternal heart of darkness (except maybe Derek). This one is a perfect example of the warm-and-fuzzy potential we all took for granted pre-S3. It also incorporates one of my favorite canon aspects of Stiles - that he is part of an online gaming community that battles mythical creatures.

Though the premise might feel like a stretch - that Stiles gets the whole pack hooked on World of Warcraft - it works. The characterization is delightful, the dialogue is funny, and it's one of my favorite pack-learns-to-work-together-and-love-each-other fics ever written. It helps that the ensemble is always at the forefront of this fic and, ultimately, that's why I chose it. Because although Derek and Stiles end up together, the fic starts and ends with the pack. And that makes it kind of perfect.

Pairing: Gen (some hints of Vernon Boyd/Erica Reyes)
Length: 1500+
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website: AO3
Why this must be read: In a different vein than my previous two recs, this fic is a quieter (and shorter) character study.

Here we have a story that takes the headcanon of Boyd being Muslim and expands on it - what motivates him, what makes him tick, what he feels and thinks, what his faith means to him. It's a stunning portrayal of a character - and a faith - that rarely gets this kind of representation in the fandom. It's revealing and perfectly paced and beautiful.

The best part, though, is that even for a fic written pre-S3 it's almost prescient. Some of the details woven throughout the fic reflect what was revealed later in canon in a way that feels a bit like being slapped across the mouth.

This is a bittersweet fic in a different way from my first rec in that the reality of canon sharpens its edges and makes it melancholy. But in a way that also makes it even more lovely.

Why this must be read: I was asked if I had any Scott-centric recs for you guys this month and as he is my one true lord and alpha, I couldn't wait to oblige. This little gem is one I read recently and what the author describes as crack I consider a true delight from start to finish.

Here we have an AU in which werewolves still exist and Isaac goes to college where he unexpectedly encounters an alpha in his Comparative Lit class and what really stands out in this for me is Scott's characterization (which is revealed through Isaac's POV and only serves to make Scott MORE endearing). It's always interesting to take a look at what these characters would be like without the weight of canon on their shoulders and this fic gives us a Scott who is a wonderful extension of the sweet, dorky, earnest boy we meet in the pilot but with serious game. Like. Serious. I dare you not to fall a little bit in love with Scott in this fic.

Isaac is also great here - a little sweet, a little snarky, and so totally done for as soon as Scott smiles at him. Plus his interactions with his pack are fun and made me giggle more than once. And the references to canon, not to mention Lydia's cameo, are all ridiculously fabulous little moments that make this college AU come to life.

Pairing: Lydia Martin/Erica Reyes
Length: 6900+ words

Why this must be read: This is a story, first and foremost, about self discovery and coming of age. It's a story about friendship, specifically between teenage girls and even more specifically between three brilliant, beautiful, deadly young women navigating the new world they've been thrust into.

Set post-S2 (and AU to S3), this fic takes the time to explore Erica's motivations and fears and insecurities. It's a wonderful take on a character who, despite having great depths hinted at, was presented to us virtually one-note. It's especially fantastic because it doesn't go the obvious route, though beware some shades of dub-con in the interpretation of certain canon events.

In addition to being a great character-study, this fic embraces and celebrates female friendship in a way that's rarely seen in fandom. In fact, the boys are barely on the page and the author's take on them (and Derek in particular) is unique and suits the story well. Plus, there's an interesting and subtle exploration of ethnicity that adds depth not only to Erica's character, but to the narrative as a whole.

And while this is certainly a love story, it's a story about love in all its forms and that's what makes it at times bittersweet but always beautiful.

Why this must be read: I'm not sure where it started, but the inclination to make Stiles a were-beast, but not of the wolf variety, is strong in this fandom, and for some reason, more often than not, Stiles becomes a were-fox. This is one of the animal transformation stories that I absolutely adore. It seems to capture both the frustration that comes with such a drastic change in one's life, and the feeling of freedom and delight at suddenly having access to new senses and experiences. Stiles has to learn to control his shifts and new instincts, while the pack is trying to sort out the intention behind the bite. It's not an accident Stiles is bitten, and the underlying plot to take Stiles away from the pack is what really drives the first part of the story. Even after that particular plot is resolved, the story continues exploring the pack's lives, as well as Stiles and Derek's growing closeness. Throughout, Derek as Alpha is the one Stiles turns to for protection, understanding, comfort, and then he wants more.

The relationship build in this is so slow as to be almost glacial, but it's beautifully done. Both Stiles and Derek are so careful with one another, and every step forward in the relationship feels exquisitely earned. It's intense and romantic. If you need something to get caught up in for hours, you won't be disappointed with this story.

'Oh my god,' Stiles said. 'Oh my god.' He’d been bitten by a werefox. 'I’ve been bitten by a werefox.' )

Why this must be read: Peter is one of the most interesting characters around, but a lot of writers aren't sure what to do with him in fic, so he often ends up being the creepy, bad guy. As much as creepy suits him, I like the Peter in this fic much more. He's smart, funny, and bored. Smart, funny people are dangerous when they're bored - they usually like to shake things up to make the world more entertaining for themselves - and that's exactly what Peter does. With Barry Manilow. Who Peter knows is "the greatest romancer of all time." Trust me, this story has everything - plot, sirens and warlocks, humour, banter, hurt/comfort, and the sweet slow build of Barry-Manilow-assisted romance. What more could you possibly want?

This story is kind of a crossover, but it's not necessary to know anything about Transformers to enjoy the story because Stiles and Derek don't know anything about them either. However, the boys are forced to figure things out pretty fast when Stiles's Jeep appears to have developed a mind of its own.

It was the summary (the cut-tag text) that really got me on this one because, honestly, this is totally Stiles and Derek. The excerpt will give you a clear idea of what to expect, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Why this must be read: I admire writers who can take two quite different canons, and blend them together in a way that makes perfect sense, the kind of sense that makes you go, "oh, of course, it's like that!" Canon-compliant with the Avengers and TW (to S2), Clint Barton is the Hale that got away. Convinced he contributed to the fire that killed the family, and that Laura and Derek were better off without him, Clint changed his name and went to work for SHIELD. Like Derek, Clint's got that tough guy/lone wolf thing working for him, and more than enough guilt to go around. I don't want to reveal too much of the story because it unfolds in a way that really makes you believe Clinton (Barton) Hale is Derek's older brother. There's plot, emotional turbulence, and sweet moments in between, all of it written in Morgan's easy-flowing style that demonstrates she gets these characters, all of them - 'cause even the Avengers make an appearance (much to fanboy Stiles' delight.)

'You're supposed to be dead,' Derek growls, not backing down despite Clint's show of submission.' )

Why this must be read: Because any story that starts out with Stiles and Derek running through the forest, injured and desperately looking for a refuge, is promising, in my books. Yes, it's a "forced to get wolf-married" story, but rather than a bout of sex, Derek marks Stiles with a handprint. (Supernatural fans, you know how a profound bond can be established by a handprint!)

The handprint gives them the ability to sense the other person and his emotions. It also means that Derek's instincts kick into high gear, including needing to be near Stiles to protect him, which causes some tension with Stiles' dad when Derek basically moves in. Of course, nothing's going on between the boys, but all those linked emotions, living together, and the continuous threats to their lives have to have some effect on them.

I love a story with a slow build, with great (hilarious) dialogue, with little turns of plot (Stiles, do you really want to go on a date with someone else?), and the whole backwards married-then-dating way of getting together that ends with a romantic gut-punch when the characters have to make a choice about the relationship they accidentally wound up in. This story has pretty much everything I love, and as a bonus it's really funny. Stiles' inner monologue is a joy to behold, and Derek's dry sarcasm is perfect.

It was, like, a platonic claim! Or the hags would have let the hunters kill us! )

Sorry for the bit of a late start ... Stiles' Jeep was in the shop, but now we're back on the road and ready for a month of mainly Derek/Stiles recs. Come along for the ride!

Why this must be read: A lot of stories that are marked Derek/Stiles aren't necessarily about that. In fact, I'd say this one is only even pre-slash if you squint the squintiest squint ever squinted. It's more about family and memories, that gut-wrenching moment when you are reconnected to your past, and suddenly you're both elated and miserable because for one instant you have the people you love back, but it makes their loss that much more painful.

Stiles is working a summer job at the library, and though he's stepped back from the werewolf shenanigans after Season 2, he can't help but reach out to Derek when he finds an old film in the archives. Of course, Stiles and Derek being who they are, Stiles can't give the footage to Derek directly, and Derek can't exactly say how much it means to him. (Boys!) The story also gives Peter a nice touch of humanity, and seems fitting for these end of summer days.

An Excerpt
[Stiles] freezes, crouched down by the DVD player, arm outstretched.

He’s pretty stupid. That’s all Stiles can think, eyes fixed on the screen. They always went to celebrate the Fourth of July, and those other DVDs had all had his dad sitting on the dais with Sheriff Ritter and the mayor, looking mostly bored out of his skull, so Stiles not realising – not even conceiving – that his
mother might be on there as well is stupid.

This is my last rec! Sadface. :( It's been an absolute blast reccing you all my favourite stories (so much so that I may or may not be off to sign up for another round), and I hope y'all got something out of it too. :) I'm leaving you with one of my absolute favourite favourite fics, I must have read it a dozen times by now, it would be a little embarrassing if I still had any shame left. See you around! :)

Fandom: TEEN WOLF
Pairing: Allison & Stiles bromance (with Stiles/Derek and Allison/Scott in the backgroud)
Length: 8683 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] magneticwave
Author Website: AO3
Summary: For their tenth birthday, Stiles had gotten Allison a mug from a kiosk at the mall with AREN’T YOU GLAD WE EVOLVED OUT OF NEIGHBORING CELLS on one side and a picture from their school trip to the zoo, the one where Allison was hitting a goat trying to eat Stiles’ shirt, on the other. It’s such a metaphor for their entire existence that Allison puts it on the mantle of every subsequent house that they live in, next to their parents’ wedding portrait.

Why this must be read: I love pairingfic, it's great, it's awesome. But sometimes you just want to read something that doesn't have all those clichéd romantic story happenings, you know? At least, I do. This story has Stiles and Allison as canonical twins, which is highly impossible but works so. fucking. well.

I love their relationship, typical sibling bickering and fierce protectiveness. I love that there's some relationship stuff in the background but it's not the main part of the story, I love the fact that there's backstory (explained in author's notes) that makes everthing make sense and most of all I just really love Stiles and Allison and their crazy sibling relationship. Did I mention that already? ♥

Really, the only thing not to love about this story is that there isn't more of it. :( Go forth and enjoy!

Are you seriously suggesting we just not tell Dad that we saw Mrs. Hale at the grocery store? Are you? )

Fandom: TEEN WOLF
Pairing: Stiles/Derek
Length: 25959 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] entangled_now
Author Website: AO3
Summary: He has no idea what you're supposed to say when you find one of your...werewolf acquaintances, completely out of their mind, growling like they're about to see what your insides taste like. There's no handbook for this. Stiles is thinking that if he survives he might write one.

Why this must be read: If you're in Teen Wolf fandom, and you've never read anything by entanglednow, well, what are you still doing here? You should be reading already! If you're in Teen Wolf fandom and you have read some of her stuff, then you know how great she is.

Feral wolves is an interesting concept, and I'm always surprised it doesn't get used more often. Or maybe it does, and I just missed the fics, IDK. Whatever the situation, feral wolves is what this story is about. My favourite thing about it is probably how Stiles often has no idea what he's doing but he perseveres anyway, because it's important and someone has to do it. Also Derek is sometimes kinda cute with the grouchy stripped away. And lastly, I genuinely enjoy how they deal with the aftermatch and how it's not an immediate "OMG I LOVE YOU NAO" "NO I LOVE YOU" kind of thing. :)

Scott doesn't sound happy. He sounds out of breath, and a little panicked, through the phone. There's a mess of noise in the distance that sounds like the dry, cracking splinter of wood, and then someone shouting. )

29th-Jul-2013 01:10 pm you're the message i was heeding - magneticwave (PG-13)
Fandom: TEEN WOLF
Pairing: Stiles/Derek
Length: 12057 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] magneticwave
Author Website: AO3
Summary: Stiles Hale: Schrödinger’s widow.

Why this must be read: Genderswapped, always-a-girl!Stiles and alternate reality jumping are two tropes that are reasonably common on this fandom, and for good reason because they're both awesome. This story not only combines the two (which is a stroke of genius) but it's also written from the POV of genderswapped, reality-jumped Stiles (which makes it a genius masterpiece).

On top of that, the story has some twists and turns that are simultaneously amazing and heartbreaking. I love love love this story with all my heart, not because of the plot or the way Stiles is still perfectly in character, but because it feels so realistic. (In as much as dimension hopping, genderswapped stories about werewolves can, I mean.) It's not really a sad story, but it's so honest in terms of dealing with grief and the shittiness that everyday life can be like: it sucks and it's painful and there's absolutely nothing you can do about it.

I think it should be read for that reason alone, because often stories are too neat and have a happy ending and everything is great and everyone is happy. I usually don't mind that, reading stories is a way to escape from the shittiness of life. But it doesn't hurt to be reminded, every now and then.

The first person to come across Stiles is actually Scott McCall. )

27th-Jul-2013 09:50 pm may your path be the sound - magneticwave (PG)
Fandom: TEEN WOLF
Pairing: Sherriff Stilinski/Melissa McCall
Length: 13321 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] magneticwave
Author Website: AO3
Summary: This may make Melissa a terrible mother, but things were so much easier when Scott and Stiles were unpopular and spent their weekends on either her or John’s couch, playing Mario Kart and talking about all of the stuff they were never going to be cool enough to do. Scott and Stiles’ weekends now mostly involve blood and Derek Hale.

Why this must be read: Because the Sherriff and Melissa are really interesting characters that don't get enough screentime or character development in most fics. (Or in canon for that matter.) Because it's a third person POV on all the werewolf shenanigans, which makes it really interesting. Because it's a third person POV from someone invested, and that's even better. Because there's Stilinski family backstory and there's so much of it and it's so fascinating. Because it's like a fic where Mama Stilinski is still alive without her being, yknow, alive.

Or, yknow. All of the above.

John shows up at her door on a Friday night in September with a bottle of whiskey and two shot glasses.  )

26th-Jul-2013 12:42 am Stilinski's Home for Wayward Wolves - owlpostagain (PG/light R)
Fandom: TEEN WOLF
Pairing: Stiles/Derek
Length: 35197 words
Author on LJ: unknown, but she is on Tumblr
Author Website: AO3
Summary: In which Stiles Stilinski moves to Beacon Hills for his junior year of high school and accidentally adopts a pack of teenage werewolves.

Why this must be read: There's a whole stockpile of AUs in the Teen Wolf fandom, but this one seperates itself from the pack (see what I did there?) by being pretty unique. The summary pretty much says it all, this is a story of what would happen if Stiles hadn't been there during the first two seasons (ignoring, as the author says, that they'd probably all have died without him) and how he comes into the pack late.

There's a few other canon tweaks, mostly related to Peter, Jackson and Erica, but overall this is a highly enjoyable and amusing AU that paints a really interesting "how Stiles became part of the pack" picture.

Length: 17917 words

Author Website: AO3
Summary: Stiles is having the worst day of his life and it keeps happening.

Why this must be read: This series is going to break your heart a little, I'm just gonna say it outright. If you don't like angst with a happy ending, this may not be for you, but if you don't mind a little sadness, this series is a-ma-zing. The sheer scope of emotions that Stiles and Derek go through is stunning, and it's a really original take on a Groudhog Day AU too.

It's written as a series, but really the two fics belong together. Stiles and Derek are affected by the same spell, and you get to see it from both sides, which creates very interesting comparisons between their personalities and how they deal with the problem.

Plus, the end makes up for EVERYTHING.

Stiles sits up, clutching the covers and blinking at the world as if that’d force it to make sense again. )

22nd-Jul-2013 08:47 pm DILF - twentysomething (NC-17)
Fandom: TEEN WOLF
Pairing: Stiles/Derek
Length: 30871 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] twsomething
Author Website: AO3
Summary: Today is Scott's first day of kindergarten and Derek is terrified.

Why this must be read: DILF is one of the defining fics in Teen Wolf fandom, imo, so much so that I was seriously surprised to see nobody has recced it here before. Thankfully, that's changed now.

It's hard to put my finger on exactly why DILF is so delightful. Excellent characterisation? Originality of casting Scott and Jackson as Derek's kids but still retaining their unique personality? Lightheartedness? Slow build romance? I don't know, but this fic has all of those things. And it's funny to boot. It's not a complicated storyline, but it's fleshed out and really well-written. Plus as an AU it reads perfectly without knowing anything about canon (I know this, because that's how I read it), but at the same time it's filled with winks and nudges to the show.

It's one of my favourite stories, always makes me laugh with the funnies and the cute, so if you haven't read it yet: get thee hence! In fact, I think I might too. It feels like a reread-DILF kinda night.

Derek goes to work because going home would just be depressing without Scott running all over the house, screaming at the top of his lungs that he wanted to play aliens and ninjas. )

Pairing: Stiles/Danny
Length: 18210 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] wldnst
Author Website: AO3
Summary: In which Stiles Stilinski has a werewolf for a best friend, a support group for that, hot chocolate with Lydia Martin and Danny Mahealani every Thursday evening, and an extremely anticlimactic coming out experience.

Why this must be read: Look, it's a non-Stiles/Derek fic! :D But honestly, if I had to pick any other pairing as my favourite, it'd be Stiles/Danny. What's not to love about Danny, amirite?

Wldnst has great character voices, her fics are well-written, contain loads of details and excellent world building and most of all, her fics are funny. I guarantee one or two giggles or chuckles in every one of her fics. (Meaning, yes, you definitely need to check out her other stuff.) I particularly adore her Lydia in this. I love it when Lydia railroads Stiles into being her BFF. :D

Stiles finds a note from Lydia in his locker on Thursday that tells him to be at the coffee shop two towns over at seven under threat of something vague but terrible happening. )

15th-Jul-2013 10:41 am The Strength of the Wolf Is the Pack - Dira Sudis (PG-13)
It's Crack Van Collision Day! :D

Fandom: TEEN WOLF/GENERATION KILL
Pairing: Boyd/Erica, Rudy Reyes/Pappy Patrick
Length: 9428 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] dsudis
Author Website: AO3
Summary: "Uncle Rudy," Erica said. "It's me."

Why this must be read: Most Teen Wolf crossovers are written with Supernatural, which I can understand because it's a pretty easy jump to make. But I didn't want to go the easy route (plus, I've never read SPN fic), so I went with this story. I love Generation Kill so fucking much, and Rudy is such a great character so when I heard Erica's last name was Reyes, it immediately became my headcanon that they're somehow related.

Dira Sudis (as per usual) gets all the character's voices perfect, I love her Erica and Boyd and I love how she seamlessly inserts the guys from Generation Kill in the story. Even more so, I love the way she seamlessly puts the Marines in Beacon Hills. Teen Wolf/Generation Kill isn't really an obvious crossover choice, but it works, it works like burning! Also I am eagerly awaiting the sequel where the rest of Bravo 2 makes an appearance. Ray + Stiles = yes please.

Note: the story is written from Boyd's POV which makes it an excellent read for people who aren't familiar with Generation Kill because he doesn't know them either. :) Even if you don't know the show, I'd rec this fic for the excellent Erica/Boyd characterisation!

Boyd knew he should take the phone from her, should spare her uncle from this and convince her to do something else, but... he'd been following Erica all night. He had no idea what else to do, and Erica was already pressing the phone to her ear. )
