Why this must be read:

Leonardo ninja-bastards his way through conversations! Mikey acts like he actually has a brain! Donatello threatens revenge via mecha-toaster! Raphael may or may not have a Plan B that involved handcuffs! April Hatches diabolical plans!

It's pretty well acknowledged in just about every canon and pretty much all of the fanon that Donatello keeps things running around the lair. He's their mechanic, cable guy, plumber and doctor all rolled up with a healthy dash of mad scientist thrown in. So when his brothers push him into taking a few days off of being Mr. Fix-It, they're all a little surprised when things just keep getting... well, fixed.

"I mean, isn't there anything you'd rather be doing than cleaning up after everyone else?"

"Says the ninja who somehow managed to blow up the toaster," Raph muttered snidely, thirsting for vengeance for being startled. Leonardo didn't acknowledge the statement, sitting down across from his brother contemplatively. Donnie looked down at the table, considering the question.

"Well…I suppose I could take a few days off. I do have a few projects that I'd like to finish up with. And I've wanted to play around with different ideas for the security system. I was thinking I might try to install some kind of infrared sensors around the perimeter: nothing too sensitive, mind you, because I'm sure we don't want it going off every time a rat gets too close, but…you aren't listening to a word I'm saying, are you?" He asked his brothers suspiciously, having glanced up mid-explanation. Michelangelo, as it turned out, had somehow managed to sneak away from the table, and Leonardo was staring rather wistfully after him, mind completely elsewhere.

"I was listenin'," Raphael said idly. "Had no idea what you were sayin', but I heard ya." He spun one of his sai on his fingers before turning his gaze to Leo, who hadn't answered at all. Eyes narrowing mischievously, he picked up a spare piece of cereal from the table's surface and chucked it, hitting the eldest directly between the eyes.

Leonardo gave no indication that he'd noticed.

Characters: Raphael and Donatello, Leo, Mikey
Length: 21000 words

Why this must be read:

I have a weak spot for well-constructed fight scenes, and Blood Red Moon delivers. Donatello has a bad feeling on patrol one night, but lets Raphael talk him into ignoring it. The ambush they walk into is the worst they've ever faced. Sanru deals with the emotional consequences of walking into the trap as well as she does the actual fight. A great action story with a big dose of h/c at the end.

Because it's winter, and they're getting older, and maybe everything has changed.

Leo carefully gathers extra supplies with his father every other afternoon; they come home and drink green tea at the table, discussing the season as their numb fingers curl about the mugs. Raph sometimes joins them now. Pulls up a chair and sits, oddly out of place and yet perfectly at home, and sometimes he even agrees with something Leo says.

Most of us grew up watching the old TMNT cartoons (At least, I did - am I dating myself here?) where Shredder used robot Foot ninjas and hurled lots of empty threats. His favorite was that he was going to turn the guys into Turtle Soup. Well, in this fic, he does just that. Sort of.

It's a serious take ona silly idea, and it somehow ended up being a favorite story of mine. And hopefully, a good one to end the month on.

Length: 10,430 words

Why this must be read:

The CGI movie came out in March 2007 and spawned a whole new batch of fanfic. The movie was rather awesome and made many fans very, very happy, but there was just enough NOT covered to give writers incentive to write.

Early in the movie we see that Raph and Donatello aren't exactly getting along these days (Raph's being a jerk, Don's being condescending). By the end of the movie we're left to assume that all is well - but the two of them really never interact at all for the rest of the movie. So what went wrong, exactly, that had them at each other's throats in the first place? And was it really resolved that easily?

Irreplaceable is one of the many fics that tackled this subject and Donny's Boy worked his own story into there as well. Recent oddities in Donatello's behavior have caused Raphael to take another look at his brother and re-evaluate the way they treat each other. It's a nice change from the plethora of fluffy epilogue fics that have Raph and Don just magically deciding they aren't mad at each other anymore. After all - anyone who has a sibling knows it's never that easy, right?

Though Raph enjoyed being right - and enjoyed its corollary: Leo being wrong - he couldn’t completely ignore the twinge of discomfort in the pit of his stomach.

Don had covered for him, and Raph didn’t know why. It’s not like he’d done anything lately to get into Don’s good graces. Quite the opposite, actually, and Don sure hadn’t endeared himself to Raph. And this was a bit worrying, because Donatello always had a very careful, very meticulously-considered reason for everything he did.

Always.

Why this must be read:

Angel is one of those characters that people either like or hate. When she first showed up she was something of a Mary-Sue. She was important to Casey even though he's never mentioned her in the past, she was a badass, and despite being fourteen she was a strong enough martial artist to take down several full-fledged Purple Dragons. She got better in later episodes (In the massively awesome Same As It Never Was Angel led a team of commandos against the Shredder) but she started off kind of annoying.

This story manages to make this two-dimensional Mary-Sue into a sympathetic character with interests and feelings – and those feelings happen to involve a certain brainiac mutant.

Turtle Tot stories are by their very nature adorable. I mean, seriously, little baby mutant turtles? What's not to love?

Problem Solving 101 is a cute little story, set when the guys are seven and they're all still growing into their separate personalities. For the first time Donatello's become so engrossed in a project that he's shut out the rest of the world – and his brothers don't like it.

"I will swear a keppan!"

"Umm... Mikey?" Leo finally broke the stunned silence that this emotional outburst of their baby brother had resulted in, "Umm.. you KNOW That means a 'blood oath', right?"

Mikey, fire in his eyes, nodded fiercely. He stood there, trembling all over, fists clenched, resolve hardened.

"... 'cause you KNOW that means you gotta sign it with your own blood," Leo continued. "And that means you gotta cut your thumb or finger or..."

"I'll get the knife!" Raph shouted gleefully.

Why this must be read:

I believe I've mentioned before that it's fun to throw Raphael and Donatello in a room together and see what happens. Well, that's pretty much exactly what LucyToo does in this story. Raph and Don are trapped, Don is hurt, Raph has no freaking clue what to do so they end up talking about Hamlet. There's a little bit more to it than that, but trust me when I say that Defying Augury is sweet, in-character and just about perfect for these two. The author says it is technically pre-slash, but there's no hint of it at all in the first story. The sequel, Readiness is All is definitely Raph/Don.

"What are you doing in here?"

Raph heaved a breath. "Trying to figure out why your pal Shakespeare didn't write the play about Fortinbras instead."

Don blinked, and his smile grew wider. "That's not what I mean."

"Well, it's what I'm doing. Hamlet's getting on my nerves."

"You'll like the way the play ends, then."

Why this must be read:

This is a cute, fluffy, adorable and utterly pointless little fic about Don, Mike and how being a patient big brother means listening to someone ramble about nothing at five in the morning.

No, it couldn’t be. His little brother wasn’t really shouting at him, he was still dreaming. Subconsciously he knew it was still dark even on the surface, so it was illogical that Mikey would be awake and shouting. Illogical for two reasons; one, Mikey rarely woke before daybreak unless absolutely necessary, and two, he knew his brothers were perfectly within their rights to murder him if he awoke them before six thirty.

Why this must be read:

It's an interesting premise, although one not entirely supported by canon. Raphael and Donatello are on their way home after a night at Casey's when they find themselves in a showdown against a freaked out kid with a gun. Facing off against that kind of firepower throws them and shows them how helpless they can really be against their enemies, even with all their training. Now, they've faced guns in canon a hundred times before, but the kid does have the drop on them, and they are in a tight spot. Raphael's reaction is true to form and very real, but it's Donatello's actions that really make the story for me.

"I said, put down the gun," Don repeated, his voice still calm as he spoke, although Raph could tell he was anything but calm; his entire being seemed to tremble with fear.

The boy turned back to look at Raph, the desperation in his eyes having transformed into panic, the tears running down his face gone dry.

"I'm serious," Donatello urged, raising his hand a little higher, holding the gun a little tighter. "Put it down."

The pile of human parts in the corner shifted but didn't move. Sideswipe stuck his hand in the doorway, tapping the floor to get its attention. "Hey, you! You all right?"

Another shift, and then a head poked up from behind an arm. A green arm. Sideswipe blinked. The head was green too. And lacked a nasal structure. Sideswipe was not a leading authority on earthlings like 'Bee or Hound, but this didn't seem right to him. Did humans even come in green?

"I must be seeing things," the...it said, somewhat thickly. "I'm being rescued by a giant robot. I think I hit my head harder then I thought."

Length: 8, 382 words

Why this must be read:

Because it's the funniest goddamn thing in the entire fandom, I kid you not. Leo gets hit by a drugged dart but instead of getting knocked out he gets – well, kinda dopey. Serendipity manages to work most of the clichés in there while still keeping it all delightfully relevant to the guys – Leo's favorite topic while drugged? What a total jerk that Raph guy is.

"Is the air conditioning broken, too?"

"Huh? What? Oh… uh… yeah."

"Thought so. Bet it was Raph," he said, sounding absolutely sure about this, as he nearly stumbled against Michelangelo in his attempt to make his point, "Because… when someone’s being an asshole facing near the West, the luck goes bad because of negative… chi… and it all goes into the AC and clogs the vents. And then it, whatsit, breaks and starts snowing because it’s too cold."

This statement was met with the absolute silence of people struggling with the desire to fall on the floor in hysterics.

"I think… it probably doesn’t, actually…" Donatello said quietly.

"It’s really rude of you to clog up our AC with your jerk behavior, Raph," Michelangelo said, grinning like an idiot, "I mean, if you must be an asshole, at least face the South."

When you've finished Misadventures, check out A Series of Unfortunate Events, the sequel, in which Leo's brothers get their revenge for what he put them through. (Chapter one has nothing to do with Misadventures, but the subsequent chapters do).

Why this must be read:

The idea that one of them may not come home one day is something that the guys have faced in canon a half a dozen times, but every time they face that possibility it doesn't get any less terrifying. In this story, Sewer Slider takes that reality and combines it with Leo's own personal nightmare – being the one to chose who lives and who dies.

The bastard's had it in for Leo ever since the last time we fought. It was Leo then, the one who caused his downfall. And it's Leo now. Leo, who he's had it in for ever since. But breaking his body isn't enough for this guy. He wants to break Leo's mind... to break his heart.

Trouble is, he might be succeeding.

"Choose," the guy says, like Leo's picking a meal and we're the menu. "One of your brothers stays with me. The others are free to go. Which among them is expendable?"

Length: 4657 and 8671
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: Calliopechild on ff.net

Why this must be read:

Donatello and Raphael are awesome, they really are. They're basically polar opposites. Don is the pacifist, always thinking and Raphael is the fighter, always struggling against the world and usually willing to take things at face value. But underneath that, if you're willing to poke at them long enough and put the effort into keeping them in character, they actually have a LOT in common. (Plus it's just fun to force them to put up with each other.)

Calliopechild put the effort into these stories and came up with a cute, sweet and very realistic little character piece showing that it's not smart to ignore Donatello when he tells you something – and also, that he can't resist a challenge any more than Raph can. And the sequel, while not nearly as cute, picks up the challenge from the first story and shows it through to its conclusion, while also giving us and Raph a good look at just what it means for Donnie to be the one who always has to treat the wounded.

A sharp blow shot across Raph’s head, snapping it to the side, and vague stars danced a quick little jig behind his eyes. Pain and shock wrestled for control, the respective thoughts flitting across his mind; ‘that hurt like a mother!’ was quickly followed by ‘I just got bitch-slapped by Don!’.

Length: 42,105 words

Why this must be read:

Because it's just about the best TMNT fanfic I've ever read. Nekotsuki won some awards for this in the Stealthy Stories TMNT fanfic contest and let me tell you, she deserves it. Underdark is a survival story at heart and she maintains a tense, consistent level of adventure throughout as the story follows Michelangelo and Leonardo in the aftermath of a collapse that leaves them stranded in the dark in an unfamiliar part of the sewers. Perhaps even more impressive, she does all this while still keeping Michelangelo perfectly in character – irreverent, sarcastic, bemused and underneath it all, a teenager trapped in the dark, trying to get his brother home alive.

Funny thing about explosions. They kinda take you by surprise and don’t really follow any schedule. I mean, it doesn’t matter what crafty ninja plan Leo comes up with … the ground bucking under your feet and a few tons of sewer water landing in your lap are gonna put a bit of a crimp in it. ‘Course, being the perfectionist he is, he’ll take it personally. You almost expect the guy to have this huge flow chart drawn up. With all those little arrows, you know? One that sends us to that little rectangle on the bottom right side of the chart that says “Plan E” in case of natural disaster.

Leo defines his childhood as carefully as he does everything else, so he knows it ended when he first realized two things: 1) that one day, ninjitsu wouldn’t be enough to win and 2) on that day he, as leader, would probably have to choose who wouldn’t be coming home.

If you're going to play in TMNT fandom at all, you're eventually going to encounter Kim's work. Her longer stories, Dark Journey and Soujourn are well-known in the fandom and DJ placed in the 2nd Annual TMNT Fanfic Awards.

Little Trouble is a cute story set when the Turtles are about ten. Splinter's gone out for supplies and they decide to launch an unsupervised expedition to Central Park. There are only two problems: They don't know where they're going and Splinter's going to be so mad when he finds out.

Kim manages to give each of the guys a personality that is childlike, yet still their own. Raph is pushy, but not antagonistic. Don's a bookworm, but not withdrawn. Leo's the huffy responsible one, but he's not yet become burdened. Mike is Mike. ^_^

"Then plot our course Navigator."

"Aye, Cap'n. Course plotted and locked in." Don folded the map for easy reference, and picked up the compass. "Warp speed available now."

"Wait a minute, if he's Helm, then how come he's talkin' like Scotty?"

Why this must be read:

Just before it was cancelled (leaving us with only hints of an awesome story arc which would, sadly, never be) Archie Comics ran several flashback stories showing the Turtles as little kids. Mostly these were silly things like why they wear different colors or how they got their weapons, but the fans loved them, and it's become a popular theme in fanfic.

Rin takes a couple of the themes touched on in those flashbacks and expands upon them. For example: before the guys were old enough to start mugging the muggers – where did they get money? What about food? And how?

Splinter is easily the best part of this story. Too often he's pushed to the background as a nagging teacher, or harsh disciplinarian - or left out of the stories altogether. Rin manages to show Splinter as a concerned, harried, frustrated father of four with no one to turn to for help and very little in the way of options.

Why this must be read:

Because if April and Casey ever got married on-screen, this is how it would happen, with drama, family angst and ninja attacks. The OC is Megan, Casey's cousin, who invites herself to New York for a visit and gets a few unexpected surprises. ("Oh my god, maybe they're aliens!") And then the Foot Clan attacks and it all goes straight to hell.

The writing is a little rough in some places, (some punctuation problems) but overall quite good. I'm usually extremely wary of OC-romantic interests, but Megan's a fun character who spends a lot of time in the story banging her head against the wall and asking Casey how his life got so weird. My favorite character gets tortured a bit, Raph and Casey are almost as dysfunctional as Casey and April, there are some great fight scenes, and we learn once and for all that Casey's five-year-old daughter is the sanest person in the extended family.

Convinced that they were safe for the moment, she turned to face her sister, the decision made. Now was the time to tell her the truth; about the turtles, about her wedding, about everything. She took a deep breath and sat next to Robyn on the bed.

"April?" Robyn asked curiously. Why did she look so serious?

April sighed. "Robyn..." she began. "Do you remember those Italian guys I told you about...?"
