Panik at AO3
Why this must be read:
Fluterbev and Panik are both known for their love of angst so it's no surprise that this is a dark, angst-ridden story. I'd recommend noting the authors' warnings for dark themes and violence .
Set ten years after TSByBS , Blair's life is not a happy one; he is socially isolated and haunted by his past and then things just get worse. We gradually learn the horrors that Blair and Jim have been through over the years and there are lots of misunderstandings and lashings of angst and suffering for them both. I found this is a totally absorbing read and was on edge right until the end. I hope you enjoy it, too.

Why this must be read: This story was written for this year's Sentinel Big Bang.
Changes at the PD have torn Jim and Blair's partnership apart and thrown their future into doubt. In the aftermath, they become involved in a dangerous attempt to expose a human trafficking operation in Cascade.
This is a gripping, well plotted case fic which keeps the reader's attention right to the end . The tension remains high throughout, both in terms of the angsty relationship stuff and the perilous situations they find themselves in. A very enjoyable story from a fairly new writer to The Sentinel.

The story has lovely illustrations by [livejournal.com profile] stargatesg1971

I have a few extra days posting access so while November was all about old favourites I'm glad of the chance to rec some new stories. It's great that we not only have ten solid years of Crack Van recs to look back on but we still have wonderful new stories being written for The Sentinel.

Why this must be read: This excellent cyberpunk novel was written for this year's [livejournal.com profile] sentinelbigbang. Set in a very different, future Cascade, Jim is a sentinel looking for cybernetic modifications to control his senses and Blair is a cybernetic surgeon entangled in the underground world of the criminal "Wolfpack gang". Morgan has created a very detailed, believable world with lots of intriguing sci-fi ideas. The story is full of drama and action and is an enthralling read. A treat for us sentinel fans but I also think it could be read and enjoyed as an original work. The delightful cover art was created by [livejournal.com profile] luna_61

Set post TSbyBS and told from Jim's pov the story has a strong, resourceful Blair picking up the pieces after the diss disaster. We see that Jim's perceptions of Blair are perhaps not the whole reality. The story has angst, romance, a case fic and my favourite 'who's Blair's father?' backstory. I also love the hint at the end of how things might develop in Cascade with the sentinel/guide business.
The story was written for Moonridge and The Sentinel Big Bang 2010 so there is some lovely art to enjoy with it as well.

Why this must be read: In this warm, funny, different meeting AU, Blair has got his Ph.D and is a professor at Rainier. He has accidentally ingested some golden and is picked up by Jim who mistakes him for a hooker. Fun and games ensue before things get straightened out. This line has stayed with me since I first read this story:

"My money?" Blair puzzled over that for a minute, then said indignantly, "I told you last night I wasn't a hooker."

"Yeah, right, Professor. You were hanging out on the street corner with all the other whacked-out Ph.Ds."

Why this must be read: This story takes the lack of trust shown by Jim in TSbyBS and runs with it to a painful conclusion. It starts a few months after TSbyBS and Jim and Blair's relationship has deteriorated to the point that Blair moves out of the loft. It becomes apparent that Jim believes that the dissertation disaster was just part of a larger betrayal on Blair's part. This is a very bleak story with no happy ending but sometimes what I want in a fic is a story that gives me a jolt and makes me think. This story certainly packs an emotional punch and although a very sad tale it's definitely worth the read.

Why this must be read: I just love "what if's?" What if Blair never got the message from his nurse friend in the pilot? This AU starts a few years after Jim's senses have come online. He has had to give up his job and uses drugs to control his senses. He is barely able to leave the loft and depends on Simon for his survival. At this low point he encounters Blair in a gay bar. There is rough sex and some non con elements but all ends happily.

Why this must be read: It’s a Halloween treat that’s only a little tricky.

Post-series, Jim and Blair are a successful crime-fighting team, which means that the mayor wants to show them off at his annual charity event. This year, it happens to be a Halloween masked ball. Jim puts up his usual protests, but is coaxed into good humor (and a tuxedo) by Blair.

At the ball, Jim is approached by a guest who seems to know more about Jim and Blair’s covert relationship than she should.

Why this must be read: It was a dark and…monsoon-y night (because after all it is Cascade). It’s Halloween and Jim and Blair are driving home in a dreadful storm. They both agree that rainy Halloweens suck because it makes trick-or-treating miserable. This leads to the sad confession that Blair never went trick-or-treating when he was a kid.

Suddenly, Blair sees something and has Jim stop the truck to take a better look. He goes haring off in the downpour, totally upsetting Jim. Apparently with good reason, because when Jim follows him into an alley Blair has vanished.

Written for a “Spook Me” ficathon, Halloween is a time for the unexplainable to happen, and they happen a lot here. Enjoy.

Length: 40K words

Why this must be read: It’s an engrossing combination of case, angst and friendship. The story begins with an operation gone bad. Jim and Blair are right in the middle of what should have been a routine roundup of penny ante criminals. It’s complicated by the fact that the cop that Jim is working the case with is actually dirty. He’s set things up so that back-up has gone to the wrong location, so Jim and Blair are outnumbered. There’s a firefight and, while Jim has his hands full, the dirty cop confronts Blair, forcing Blair to shoot and kill him.

This alone would be bad enough. But Blair was instrumental in convincing Jim and Simon to give the dirty cop another chance, after he bungled an arrest. So, not only does Blair have to deal with the aftermath of the shooting, but he calls his own judgment and usefulness into question. As icing on the cake, Internal Affairs clears Blair of any wrongdoing, but the higher-ups find him too much of a liability and order Simon to pull his credentials.

This is just jam-packed with personal and professional bits. Blair is trying to deal with the personal crisis of taking a life. Jim, knowing the shooting was justified, is trying to find a way back to normal. With his suspension from the PD, we see Blair dealing with university issues. While Jim is coping without Blair, a horrific high-profile murder takes place. And Simon is facing the reality of having to be the substitute guide.

This was first posted during the hiatus between Season Three and Four and, as a result, veers from canon. It takes place somewhere mid -S3. Incacha is mentioned, but Megan is not and there’s no mention of Blair’s drowning. It was at the Idol Pursuits site for years, but it's now at AO3. Enjoy.

Why this must be read: This an interesting “fork-in-the-road” AU which takes place after Sen Too, changing things so that TSbyBS never happens. Because the Temple of the Sentinels is an unexplored site, the university is going to fund a group to study it and they want Blair to lead the expedition. Its significance means that he can write up his findings and get his doctorate.  Blair is ecstatic; not only will this bring him personal prestige, but it solves the problem of how to protect Jim's identity in his original dissertation.

The only hitch is that he will be away for at least three month and possibly more. Jim, feeling guilty over all the recent problems they’ve had, encourages Blair to go. Within a couple of months, Jim starts to get sick and becomes sicker. Finally, he decides to leave Cascade for the pristine wilds of Alaska, hoping it will make dealing with his wayward senses tolerable. Will it be enough? What caused them to get out of whack? What will Blair do when he gets back to Cascade? Read to find out.

Musical artist: “Every time I Touch You” by The Nails
Characters: Blair Sandburg, Jim Ellison
Vidder on LJ: unknown
Vidder's website: on YouTube

Why this vid kicks ass: Because it's a feast of touchy-feely moments.

In canon, not only do Jim and Blair touch each other a lot, they touch each other in ways most people don’t. “Personal space” doesn’t seem to have much meaning for them. Is it because Jim’s a sentinel and he requires more tactile input and Blair, as his guide, understands this? Is it because they’ve been through so much together; including saving each other’s lives? Or is it that they are lovers and this is the way they communicate, since they can’t do PDAs? Each fan has her own theory, but it’s one of the things we love about them.

The screen clips aren’t the sharpest I’ve seen, but I like how Alfnrns plays a clip then does a capture before moving on. I expect you’ll find some of your top touches here to enjoy.

Why this must be read: It’s one of Brighid’s startlingly lovely “fairy tales”. In this one, she’s woven the episode “Cypher” with elements of Snow White. This seems particularly appropriate, since both the episode and the fairy tale are both darkly magical.

Length: 4K words

Why this must be read: It’s a great combination of hot sex, high anxiety and major confusion.

The first scene opens with Jim tied to his bed; but he isn’t worried…much. Blair has convinced him to participate in some light bondage and, in the flush of their new relationship, Jim agrees. The only worrisome bit is that Blair wants to videotape them. Under Blair’s ministrations, Jim soon forgets his misgivings.

But they come back with a vengeance when he thinks that perhaps Blair might be detailing their love life in a chapter of the dissertation. And when he comes home unexpectedly, he’s convinced of it.

Zelempa wrote this story after being inspired by a screencap of Richard Burgi tied up in bed in his role as Karl in "Desperate Housewives". If you want to see the source of her inspiration, you can check Jane Davitt’s screencaps here.

Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Characters/Pairing: Blair Sandburg, Jim Ellison, Simon Banks; Jim Ellison/OFC
Length: 19K words
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: at the Idol Pursuits site

Why this must be read: Jim is experiencing some strange things. First of all, he’s having inexplicable and bizarre nightmares. When he wakes up, he realizes that his senses are reaching beyond the loft to focus on a new tenant in the building, Abby McNeil. When he finally meets her, he’s struck by overwhelming and conflicting urges: he feels desire similar to what he felt for Laura in “Attraction”, but he also feels overly protective. Discussing it with Blair hasn’t helped, which adds to his frustration. On top of all of this personal stuff, he’s having trouble with a big case at work. He knows he’s missing something obvious but can’t figure out what it is. Yikes.

This is the first non-humorous story I’ve read by Mackie and it intrigued me because there was just so much going on under the surface. Lots of secrets and lots of messiness and lots of emotional turmoil, and it fooled me into going down a garden path. Dare I say “enjoy”? Read and decide for yourself.

Length: 6100 words
Author on LJ: on Dreamwidth (see website)
Author Website: at Dreamwidth and at AO3

Why this must be read: This is a cute epilogue/sequel/missing scene for a Calvin & Hobbes story written by Dolimir, which can be found here. In Dolimir’s story, Calvin and Hobbes, as they grow up, theorize that they can interact with each other (but no one else can) because they exist in separate planes of existence, but occupy the same space. They decide to become brilliant scientists when they grow up in order to figure out how to join the two existences. Starwatcher’s story starts with Hobbes successfully appearing in our universe and, purely by chance wouldn’t you know, ending up on Rainier’s campus.

Starwatcher writes mostly lovely slice-of-life stories that cover interesting subjects. And what could be more interesting (or more improbable), than Blair and Jim meeting the so-called imaginary friend of a little boy? I certainly would not have though this crossover possible, but she makes it work. I like that it takes the talents of both Jim and Blair to fix the situation. Enjoy.

Why this must be read: After the last two angsty offerings, you might need to cleanse your palate with something light and silly.

This story was written to a Sentinel Thursday challenge in 2004 but I only recently came across it when Caro posted it at AO3. The prompt was “game” and Caro hid the names of 123 games within the story, which is a murder mystery that Jim and Blair must solve. Of course it’s a high-profile, high-society murder, so of course Simon sends his best team to investigate and of course he’s on Jim’s case to get it solved immediately.

Other than that there’s been a murder, there isn’t a bit of angst to be found. So just enjoy this bit of fluff and exercise your word find abilities. Caro has the answers listed at the end of the story. How many will you find?

Why this must be read: “Night Shift” is one of the more painful episodes to watch for those of us interested in the relationship between Jim and Blair. Not surprisingly then, there isn’t much fic about it. Yet it begs to be analyzed: How did two men who have become so close misjudge each other so clearly? How do they go forward? Why didn’t they heed Gabriel’s advice?

In her author’s notes, Swellison explains the ties she has to the episode, but in our discussions she shared the same frustrations with it that I have: some of the canon just seems incomprehensible. In this story, a collection of missing scenes, she tries to make sense out it. With the next [livejournal.com profile] sentinelbigbang set to publish next month, I thought it would be nice to showcase a previous story. “Words With Friends” was written for last year’s TS Mini Bang and I was privileged to get a sneak peek by being a cheerleader/early beta for it. Why this must be read: Gil writes comedy and drama equally well, and I was really torn having to choose between two stories that are polar opposites. Since I’ll probably be recommending some lighter stuff because of Halloween, I’m going with the angst.

It’s been four years since Blair left Cascade, cutting all ties and wandering the world. His health is still fragile; lungs that have never healed from his drowning seem to mirror his wounded soul. Because four years and two weeks ago, while Blair was out of town, Jim left without waiting to talk to him, leaving Simon to explain Jim’s motivations. Now a dying Eli Stoddard, Blair’s beloved mentor, wishes to see Blair one last time and Blair is unable to refuse the request.
