Why this must be read: Another well-researched historical fic. This one focuses on Alice in her life as human and vampire. The writing is excellent and the historical context accurate as far as I can tell, having taken some university level history courses. Really good character development as well.

Why this must be read: It's a well-researched historical fic about the 300 years of Carlisle Cullen's life, beginning in 17th century England and ending in futuristic America. The inspiring story of a man who, even as a vampire, never gave up faith in God. Amazing, the quality of work a talented writer can produce even when starting from something like Twilight.

Why this must be read: Another Twilight fic for people who aren't Twilight fans. In fact, I'm not sure the typical Twilight fans would like this one. The author was inspired by The Picture of Dorian Gray: what if, instead of sparkling, vampires looked their real age in the sun? Interesting concept because in the books, whenever Bella thinks of Edward, it's always about his dazzling good looks and never his other qualities or personality. In this story, her love for him - and she - is deeper than that.

Fandom: Twilight
Pairing: Aro/Sulpicia
Length: 28000 words
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: profile
Why this must be read: The Volturi are among the most interesting characters in the Twilight series, mainly because they are real, deadly vampires who drink human blood and view people as food, not a softened "vegetarian" version. This is the story of their leader, Aro, the unofficial vampire king, and his wife Sulpicia, about whom the books tell us nothing but her name. It's beautifully written, has a complex and exciting plot, and is as dark as vampire stories ought to be.

Fandom: STAR TREK: REBOOT/TWILIGHT
Pairing: Kirk/Spock, Sulu/Chekov, others
Length: 75k
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] rainbowstrlght
Author Website: At AO3
Why this must be read:

Yes, that says Twilight. This story is, in fact, a Twilight fusion, with aliens and crop circles instead of vampires. But the thing is, the story uses the basic framework of Twilight (the book, not the series) while fixing some of that book's more egregious...issues.

For one thing, there's plot all the way through, and it's an engaging plot. It does still have the framework of Twilight, but you won't be able to guess all the turns of the story just from knowing what happens in Twilight. For another thing, Spock is not a stalker. He actually has plot-related reasons for ending up in the same places as Jim.

And you know...Twilight does have its issues, but it also has its charm, and a sense of wonder at the unveiling of a whole new world. Edward and Bella had their problems, separately and together, but the romantic archetype of two utterly different people thinking each other fascinating and working their way to a relationship -- that's pretty timeless. [livejournal.com profile] rainbowstrlght deals with some of the worst issues while still keeping the charm, the wonder, and the transformative reaction of the meeting of two different personalities, which makes this fic really enjoyable for me.

Title: this world's underneath a rocking chair (or five times hermione granger went on a motorcycle road trip with jacob black) by [livejournal.com profile] fated_addiction
Pairing: Hermione/Jacob, vague Jacob/Bella, Harry/Hermione
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] fated_addiction
Author Website: None
Why this must be read:

Chrissy's no stranger to this community. Her fics are recced in more fandoms than I can count, and there is a very large reason for what: She's absurdly talented. This is yet another example of that. The writing is fierce, and the cross is just perfect. I think a lot of people have some natural reservations about crossovers. Some universes just aren't meant to cross. You don't have to worry about that with Chrissy. Jacob and Hermione, the leads in this lovely tale, interact just perfectly, each of them aged by their pasts, each of them helping each other move forward.

And it's just glorious.

Why this must be read:

Okay, so maybe I have a love for five things fics. This is my second one this month and it won't be my last. I love them. And this one is just fabulous. Sara presents us with five distinct scenes -- each one wonderful, and tragic, and complete, but they all fall together into something truly fabulous. I have re-read this fic many times, because it's Sara at her very best -- wonderful prose, great characterization, and taxi cab sex. Everyone's a winner.

Why this must be read:

Oh, I love this fic.
This is a compilation of pain and things that hurt so much it burns. I've re-read it so many times, and every time it leaves me a messy pile of tragedy. Plus, it has references to Sylvia Plath poetry (Lady Lazarus) and Margaret Atwood's short story, "Happy Endings," one of my favorite short stories ever. All of this pushes it over the edge into epic win category. It was nearly impossible to pick an excerpt, because my favorite parts are so many and so BIG and oh, just read it please.

1st-Jun-2008 05:44 pm Five Times Bella Swan Kissed the Wrong Guy by nekare (PG-13)
Hi all! I'm your Lit Recs driver this month -- and we're doing the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer (fondly known as Smeyer).

I'm a pretty intense Jacob/Bella shipper, so that's going to be the majority of fics this month, but I read tons of UC fic, and basically you have a chance of seeing any ship this month as long as it's not Edward/Bella or Jasper/Alice or Emmett/Rosalie or Carlisle/Esme. Because the vamp ships are boring because the characters are boring. Though I may post some Edward/Rosalie, because that's always fun.

Thus, let us begin!

Fandom: TWILIGHT
Pairing: Jacob/Bella, Bella/Others
Length: 2100 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] nekare
Author Website: fic
Why this must be read:

I think I have to begin with this fic because it so encompasses everything I love about my ship. It's humorous, and painful, and pretty, and an emotional journey above all things. It's about Bella finding her way and losing it and finding it again, and that's what Jacob/Bella is about. Thinking you have your life in a need and tidy order, happy and human and in love, and then you realize that what you had isn't all it's cracked up to be, and there's something better waiting, still waiting, at the end of the day.

That's what this is about. And, yes, it's also about various ships and things like that, but the point of it all is that Jacob is circular, he's in this fic twice, and, as it turns out, he's not the wrong guy, he's just the guy Bella said was wrong until one day she realized he was just right. I have read this fic many times -- perhaps too many. It is an old fic, really, back before the Twilight fandom seemed to quadruple in size, back before fics I classify as Classic got buried beneath newcomers. But it remains one of my favorites. Every time I read it, I am full of the flail that reminds me just how fabulous my ship is, even if Smeyer doesn't see it.

And end rant. Have an Excerpt )

Why this must be read: Even if you absolutely despise Jacob/Bella in the series and think that any fic that doesn't include Edward/Bella is blasphemous, you really can't deny how truly awesome this story is. Elyssa does a really great job of telling this story. The prose, the characterization, the angst, everything is wonderful. I adore this story to death.

Why this must be read: There is a very tiny amount of Jasper/Alice fiction in thhe Twilight fandom, and even a smaller amount of those are actually good. This is one of the rare good ones. The fic shows a series of small, quiet moments between the two of them over the course of their relationship, and it's nothing short of lovely. Quietly cute and the characterization is wonderful.

Why this must be read: I have a strong weakness for "Fives Things" fics, and this is one of my absolute favorites. The idea that Bella's life doesn't begin or end with Edward Cullen, but that she can have other experiences is expressed very well here. [livejournal.com profile] chipping fills in parts of Bella's point of view that aren't really even touched on in the books. It's funny and bittersweet and wonderfully in-character.

Hi, I'm Kate and I'll be your Twilight reccer for this month. I'm sorry I had such a late start, but I had more work than I anticipated this month and so I haven't had time to rec until now. I am completely, totally Team Switzerland, so expect a lot of both Edward/Bella recs and Jacob/Bella recs. Hope you guys enjoy the stories!

Why this must be read:
There is a common practice in Twilight fanfic to make Bella an idiot, Jacob a jerk (and sometimes a rapist) and Edward a perfect, sappy hero. This story doesn't do any of that. It's completely in-character and has some nice Edward/Bella moments with actual plot. This takes place right after Eclipse ends, and if this is what happens in Breaking Dawn, I will be very pleased.
