I dare you to watch this and not laugh hysterically, then hit the replay button over and over. Basically, this vid shows the arrested development case study that is Neal Caffrey, set off against that theme for precocious kids everywhere, “I Just Can’t Wait to be King” from The Lion King. It’s terrif:

Why this must be seen:

This vid uses footage culled from Chuck, White Collar (and a few other things I don’t recognize) to create a video-based AU origin story of a spy/assassin Neal Caffrey who struggles to maintain his integrity and keep the woman he loves safe in his dangerous, underground world. I think? IDK – watch it, it’s awesome.

Why this must be read:

I love the setup: Neal and Peter are on their way to London to consult on an art forgery, and when they meet with Lestrade and his own Consulting Detective, well, it won’t shock you to learn that Neal and Sherlock already know each other. How they met years ago and their interactions then and now are the highlights of this sexy little story. This is one of the most delightful crossovers you will read in these or any other fandom. The characterizations are spot-on, the dialogue sparkles, and about the only bad thing that can be said about it is that it ends!

Why this must be read:
This one’s a painful one, but so, so wonderful, in the end, and with a happy ending, even if… well...

Peter and Elizabeth break up and Neal spends his time making sure the FBI agent is taken care of, because he’s a good friend. Except when he is not, because he has been in love with Peter for a very long time, and he just wants to be there for him. In every way. In any way. Even if it won’t last.

I love this story (and this writer) because the characters come to such life, with real, messy emotions and hot, hot sex.

Fandom: White Collar
Pairing: Neal Caffrey/Elizabeth Burke/Peter Burke
Length: 3k0ish
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] daria234
Author Website: on LJ and on AO3
Why this must be read:

Daria234 is a master of small, witty, and sensual stories that are as clever as they are enjoyable. In this one, Elizabeth is a famous photographer, Neal is the same character (though he’s never been caught), and he’s been sent to try to steal a copy of El’s first art book, which is out of print and is what Kate wants him to get her for an anniversary gift. In order to get an in, Neal offers her his services as a nude model, but when she asks Peter to join in, well… I have this shaving kink, all right?

Seriously, this is a fun and sexy read, and you could do worse than to explore Daria’s other works some rainy afternoon (she writes in many other fandoms as well).

Why this must be read:

This is an amnesia fic – one of my top ten favorite hurt/comfort tropes – and one of the best I’ve ever read. The mood is just so IDK dark and cold and you really feel what it is like for Neal Caffrey to not know who he is – the confusion, the frustration, the fear. You also see the reaction of his friends and co-workers as they desperately try to find him before the baddies do. It’s suspenseful and tightly written and you will love it.

Fandom: White Collar RPS
Pairing: Matt Bomer/Tim DeKay
Length: ~15k
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] angelita26
Author Website: Angelita’s Master List
Why this must be read:

This story is “real person fiction,” which I know isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but if it makes it go down any easier, the characters are placed in an AU where Matt Bomer owns a bookstore and Tim DeKay a customer that wanders in one day and they basically fall in love at first sight. It’d be a typical rom-com type of setup (and the writer is hella-talented, so never a disappointment), but there is an added twist that makes it all the more interesting: Matt is, in fact, disabled. From there, the story becomes a charming depiction of the complications that come out of someone who has never had to deal with a differently-abled person, and the difficulties (and joys) that can bring to them both.

It is a lovely series, and hope you will read it.

Length: 8k-ish? There is no count on the story.

Why this must be read:

Author’s summary: “Caught in the demolition of an abandoned building, Peter and Neal are hurt, trapped, and running out of time. But it's in those moments they realize that it's not enough to know what someone is. To learn who they are, they have to ask the big questions.”

I love this trope because it forces characters who care for each other to show it. And this story doesn’t disappoint on that score. Neal and Peter learn more about each other than they thought they would, and the overall effect is intimate without feeling claustrophobic. The story leaves you with – and, given the tangent the current series is on, reminds you of– a new appreciation for the kind of magic chemistry the friendship between Neal and Peter has always represented. Also, if you’re into hurt/comfort as much as I am, you will not be disappointed by the drama and the pathos of their situation. READ IT, I command ye.

Why this must be read:

Because Peter courts Neal like he’s having his teeth pulled. And because it is adorable.

This isn’t the first negotiating-a-threesome fic you’ll ever read, but it is one of the most delightful. This story is short, but the attention to detail in the character’s movements, and in the dialogue, will make you feel like you’ve read an epic romance. And it’s funny as hell.

You won’t regret reading ANY of Fatale’s White Collar stories – this is just one of many that will make you laugh, make you squirm, and make you want to read the next one.

Length: 8,700
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] winterstar95
Author Website: On LJ | On AO3
Why this must be read:

I love when an author can inject a bit of science fiction and fantasy, a bit of metaphysics into a story (a talent I lack). Winterstar is one such author – you could say it’s her specialty. This story starts with a premise that Neal is an alien here on Earth on borrowed time, and he is being “called home.” His transition is painful (and kind of icky, so if you’re sensitive you may not want to read this) for everyone involved, including Peter and Moz. But what sticks for me is Neal's experience, because he has come to enjoy being human for the time he’s been here, and has even figured out what love is. The hurt/comfort here is so well depicted, the heartbreak so real, you will weep from it. A terrific premise, handled with great attention to detail and emotion – read it.

Length: 5k
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] sheenianni
Author Website: On LJ
Why this must be read:

This is an alternate ending to the third season of White Collar, one of many in the fandom that posits, “What if Neal didn’t run, what if he fell into Kramer’s clutches in DC?” And WHAT a dark take on that possibility it is (and I love it). Neal decides to pull a con to get out of his new “sentence”: He will play on the obvious attraction Kramer has to him, and use it to ruin the man. Which he does.

God, the contempt Neal shows the man even as he makes Kramer fall for him is delicious. And in the end, Neal gets his way, but the story doesn’t end there (I won’t spoil it).

Read this for a truly interesting take on Neal – yes, he’s a conman, and he is very good at what he does – you won’t easily forget it.

Length: 9,300 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lionessvalenti
Author Website: On AO3
Why this must be read:

This is a rentboy AU wherein Peter and Elizabeth indulge themselves in a special treat for their 10th anniversary: a professional escort by the name of Neal Caffrey. What stands out about this fic – aside from the absolutely smoking hot porn – is just how realistic the entire thing seems. Peter and El are, of course, devoted to each other, but he’s so secure within their relationship he barely flinches when she asks for a threesome. During their evening together, Neal recommends Peter remove his shoes and socks before anything starts happening, because there’s nothing sexy about having to do that once you're naked.

The story is rich with emotional content as well. Though I will not spoil it by getting too specific, each participant in this night of passion gets more out of it than they planned for originally.

“Bought and Paid-for Fantasy” is the first part of a series that explores the relationships a bit further, but is wholly satisfying as a standalone. I can’t recommend it enough.

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] sahiya
Author Website: Sahiya’s Works on AO3
Why this must be read:

This is simply one of the most romantic stories I have ever read in this fandom. It’s an AU, it’s a ghost story, it’s a romance, it’s hurt/comfort at its very finest.

The story features our heroes in a situation completely outside the setup for the show, but not too far off the mark: Peter Burke is the police chief of a small town dealing with the pain of having lost his beloved wife Elizabeth; Neal Caffrey is an artist recovering from a brutal attack, renting a house from Peter for the summer. That the two men find each other is inevitable; what happens along the way is truly remarkable and will make you cry and smile and cry some more. I won’t go into it any more, for I do not want to spoil it. JUST READ IT, OK?! Then read all of Sahiya’s stories, and when you come up for air, send me a note of thanks, because you will agree with me that she is amazing.

Fandom: White Collar
Pairing: Neal Caffrey/Peter Burke
Length: ~15k total for the series
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] hoosierbitch
Author Website: On LJ
Why this must be read:

This is, basically, a must-read for all Neal/Peter shippers, because it is one of the few stories that confronts the consent issues inherent in their relationship head-on. The set-up is from a kink meme prompt: what if Peter thought he and Neal were in a relationship, when all that Neal was doing was giving Peter what he thought he needed to in order to keep from being sent back to prison? What follows is emotionally raw and devastating, as we see first-hand the toll this strategy takes on Neal, followed by Peter coming to the sick realization that he’s not so much Neal’s lover as he is his rapist.

Though it features some very heavy sex scenes (read the author’s warnings, seriously), the story also shows the hard path to healing and forgiveness (as well as a few setbacks), the devastation low self-worth can have on a person, and the redeeming nature of true friendship (seriously, Moz is a total mensch here). Written during the first season – when much of the characters’ backgrounds were unknown – this story also presents a backstory for Neal and Moz’s friendship that is touching and, I have to say, 100% better than what we got on the show.

I can’t recommend this story (or literally anything else written by hoosierbitch) enough.

Pairing: Neal Caffrey/Peter Burke/Elizabeth Burke
Length: 31k

Why this must be read:

I am a great lover of that subgenre of fanfic known as hurt/comfort. I mean, you might even call it an unhealthy obsession (I also mod the fandom’s hurt/comfort community: [livejournal.com profile] whitecollarhc). And this story is epic hurt/comfort at its very finest.

It supposes what might happen to Neal had he decided not to run at the end of “Judgment Day” and to go along with Agent Kramer. For this version of Neal, running would have cost him more than he was willing to part with – but staying almost kills his spirit.

So many things about this story resonate: Neal’s loneliness is like a living thing, though that indomitable spirit of his does shine through at first, despite a Kramer who can’t see how truly misguided and dangerous his treatment of Neal is; Peter and El’s dogged determination and caring in the face of some pretty stringent rules (not to mention their relationship with Neal is a secret); and a very compassionate original character who helps Neal when he’s least looking for it.

In the midst of it all, the characterizations are spot-on and well-drawn, not a surprise from this, one of my favorite writers in the fandom. Read it - you won't regret it.

15th-Dec-2013 07:03 am White Collar/Chuck/Fringe (Teen)
It’s time for Crack Van Collisions!! This one's a real treat:

Title: Intelligent Designs by Auburn
Fandoms: White Collar, Chuck, Fringe
Pairing: Author notes none, but I’d call it Neal Caffrey/Bryce Larkin
Length: 117k
Author on AO3: auburn
Author Website: Auburn’s works on AO3
Why this must be read:

This fic is an epic merging of three fandoms so diverse I wouldn’t have thought it possible in a hundred years – in fact, when my pal [livejournal.com profile] winterstar95 recommended it to me I initially resisted it, citing the fact it couldn’t possibly work – yet it does! And very, very well.

The author’s premise is an amazingly imaginative one, particularly for fans of the actor Matt Bomer, who portrays Neal Caffrey on White Collarand Bryce Larkin on Chuck : imagine all of the characters Bomer has ever played (Neal, Bryce, Luc from Tru Calling, Jay Burchell from Traveler, and more) are all clones based on the same “stock,” an experiment overseen by Fringe’s Walter Bishop many years ago to produce super soldiers, and one that has failed mightily. Imagine also that rogue scientist David Robert Jones knows about the Intersect from Chuck and wants to use it to find the tech that made those clones. Imagine again that Bryce Larkin never died on Chuck, and he’s out to stop Jones at all costs. Now mash it all together. The result is part adventure/casefic, part horror show, part family relationship story, and 100% excellent.

The thing that resonates the most for me with this story – besides the sheer talent it took to write it – is the relationship between Neal and Bryce. They are brothers and yet not; they know each other with an intimacy only two beings raised within a hive-like cooperative can; and they are utterly devoted to each other in ways so touching and inspiring it will make your chest hurt. Theirs is a connection and love that almost defies description, really, and fascinates me to this day, over a year since I read the story.

Now, let me assuage the fears of any reader who might be intimidated by the fact they may not be familiar with one or two of these shows: the author takes pains to orient you in the narrative of each of them – you will not be lost. I guarantee, in fact, that you will be swept away. This is a work of genius.

10th-Dec-2013 07:50 pm The Lesser of Two Evils by Ursula4x, Explicit
Fandom: White Collar
Pairing: Peter Burke/Elizabeth Burke/Neal Caffrey
Length: 17k
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] ursula4x
Author Website:Ursula’s works on AO3
Why this must be read:
While this wasn’t the first fanfic in White Collar fandom I ever read, it was the one that made me sit up and take notice; silly me, the concept of an OT3 hadn’t ever entered my mind, nor had the idea of a prison fic (so naïve, amirite?). This story is filled with super delicious hurt/comfort, a metric ton of angst, Neal being evasive, and Peter being a lovable hardass. The story is also a microcosm of the early-early days of White Collar fandom. Written as a fill for a prompt on the now practically defunct kink meme, it incorporates many of the tropes of the fandom we have since evolved past: pre-series conjecture, Neal's prison experiences, as well as a few that will never go away, like Neal striving to protect the people he loves, and one of my favorite tropes of all time: kidnapping.

I hope you will read and enjoy this story as much as I did the first time I read it – and when I just reread it to write this rec. Its writer (who sadly passed away in early 2012) is one of the underappreciated ones in the fandom, and I just wanted to give her works a little love in this, the last round of WC recs to be featured on Crack Van before the site is retired.

Please mind the warnings for non-con/dub-con for this story.

Hi kids, RabidChild here! Wheee – I finally get to drive the Crack Van for White Collar – hold on tight, it’s gonna be a bumpy ride!

Fandom: White Collar

Length: 33k
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] elrhiarhodan
Author Website: Master List
Why this must be read:

I thought I’d start off the month by reccing a story by one of the most prolific, venerated writers in the fandom (full disclosure: she’s a close pal): Elrhiarhodan. This writer has been around almost since the fandom began, and her specialty, to me, seems to be finding original ways to pair Neal Caffrey up with Peter Burke, with or without the lovely Elizabeth, then to tear them apart only to make everything right again in the end (with a side dish of extra-sexy). This story is a particularly good example of that, only Neal's reasons for not wanting to finish what he’s started with the Burkes – not yet, anyway – are surprising and ones that I will not spoil.

The thing I love about this story are the two men’s journeys, and particularly how much Peter is pining for Neal, because I am an angst junkie. Even at over 33k, and with a few tags and timestamps, the reading of this story will just fly by for you. I can’t recommend it enough – or Elr’s other stories – check them out.

Pairing: Gen, Arthur/Eames
Length: 33785, 16712
Author on LJ:
Author Website: windsweptfic, rapacityinblue
Why this must be read:
Arthur and Eames adopt a kid and raise that kid into Neal Caffrey.

A fic (and its continuation -by a different author) Skybird is mostly from Neal’s POV as he’s a pickpocket kid on the streets taken in by (secretly married spies) Arthur & Eames. They feed his hunger for art and culture (and expose him to the sartorial arts and also stealing and conning). Then Arthur’s boss’s wife kills herself and Arthur leaves the family behind to run around taking dream share jobs with Dom Cobb. Only for a month he said. Eames and Neal travel around the world together for years, running cons, stealing art, before the Inception job happens and Neal can see his parents reunited.

In the sequel, Neal’s working for the FBI and Peter Burke, and his parents come to town for a visit. And someone tries to frame them. Nel has to get the FBI to clear his parents’ names.

The fics are mostly focused on Neal’s pov, and it’s a beautiful mash-up of worlds that make you go ‘suits!’ or ‘con men!’ or ‘art!’. It’s an interesting look at how the personalities Arthur and Eames seem to have could mash up and be distilled into the type of classy sophistication Neal Caffrey puts forth.

Length: Over 100k

Why this must be read:

I don’t tend to read many crossovers (though I’ve written a few), because they need to involve fandoms I have at least a passing familiarity with, but this one came at just the right time for me. I was just getting into the Star Trek Reboot fandom last summer when this fic fell into my lap, and, because it involved my primary fandom, it made the Trek ‘verse that much more approachable. The story is a fusion of White Collar into the Star Trek Reboot ‘verse, and while the characters of the Reboot are referred to often, they don’t really play a part. Hope that counts for Crack Van Collision?

Why this must be read:

True story: In August I finally watched season one of White Collar and immediately noted: If I was writing White Collar crossover fic, Neal's impossible prettiness would be a significant plot element: he's a lost Cortexikid, (etc.)....

One day later, this fic appeared on AO3.

So granted, I was predisposed to like it. But the author does an amazing job of meshing the three universes, and it's easy to see how well they all fit: Peter Burke is FBI and could easily interact with Fringe Division! Of course Bryce Larkin and Neal Caffery are related! And it only makes sense that Walter Bishop would have known Chuck Bartowski's father. The involved relationships between all the players are delightful (Elizabeth Burke is a star, natch), and the plotting is utterly engaging.

Warnings: panic attacks, violence, cursing, abandonment issues
Author's Summary: Fifteen year old Neal is caught by the FBI in possession of forged paintings. Special Agent Peter Burke decides to give him a second chance at life. Will Neal take a leap of faith and finally trust someone to be there for him?

Why this must be read:

As the summary says, this is an AU where Peter catches Neal while he's still in his teens. This opens their family/ father-son dynamic up to a whole new level, which is the source of quite a few very cute scenes in this fanfiction. Neal, even though a teenager in this fanfiction, is still recognizably Neal and canon!Peter is very much in character, too. Angst, hurt and comfort are also part of the deal.

Warnings: language, violence

Why this must be read:

This fic takes one of my favorite tropes, namely hostage situation in a bank robbery heist, and keeps it interesting and new by mixing up action with a bit of h/c all the while keeping Neal and Peter so in-character that you could see it play out like that in an episode. (Author's Summary: Neal and Peter get caught up in a bank heist. It comes out that one of the hostages is a cop: Neal volunteers that it’s him.) As much as I like fluff without plot, a well done plotty fic is exactly what I need once in a while and the tension the author creates in this fanfiction keeps your attention until the very end. On top of that, we also have emotional scenes that show how much Neal and Peter care about one another so that all in all we have a nice mixture of character moments and plot, action/tension and moving scenes.
