Musings and Reflections by Thundera Tiger (PG)

Hi, I'm [livejournal.com profile] nightwalker and I'll be your Lord of the Rings driver for the month. Please be warned that I tend to swerve all over the place, often come to sudden stops and will shamelessly ogle schoolgirls while I'm supposed to have my eyes on the road.

For my first story, something short, dark (literally) and very, very satisfying.

Fandom: LORD OF THE RINGS
Pairing: None (Legolas/Gimli if you really want it to be)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] thunderatiger
Author Website: Her ff.net profile
Why this must be read: Excellent characterization, vivid details - pretty hard to accomplish when the main character spends half the story unable to see anything - and a style of writing that pulls you into not only the story, but Middle Earth as well. Thundera Tiger is a book fan, but movie fans will not be left adrift by her stories. On the contrary, she tends to grab you by the throat and pull you in until the story has finished. Musings and Reflections, while short compared to some of her writings, are perfect examples of this.

Summary: Separated by a cave-in, Legolas and Gimli each find themselves trapped in the dark, uncertain of the other's condition, and unable to immediately find a way out.

From Reflections in the Dark:

Calm, the dwarf told himself firmly, feeling adrenaline begin to creep into his system. Focus and remember what your father taught you. Remember your survival training. Where are you? Do you sense any other cave-ins? Are any with you and unconscious? Can you find a way out?

Unfortunately, answering these queries was far easier said than done. The last question, in particular, was rather difficult, since Gimli didn't think that he could move himself, preventing him from finding a way out. But he could answer the other three questions. He knew exactly where he was. He was about a mile away from the cavern's main entrance. At the moment he could sense no more imminent cave-ins, and so was safe from that threat for the moment. And as for companions, Gimli was coming to the conclusion that he didn't have any. It had taken a while for his scattered thoughts to settle, but now that he was thinking clearly — or rather, as clearly as circumstances would permit — he had realized that he could hear no one else in the cave with him. And had anyone else been present, he should have heard them breathing. Even Legolas could not completely silence the whispers of his breath when deep underground, for the echoes amplified all noise. Thus, if there were others in the room, then they were dead.

That thought didn't exactly sit well with Gimli.

From Musings by Torchlight:

Where had that dwarf gone?! He had been standing next to Legolas just before the rocks began to fall. He could not be far away, yet Legolas's sharp ears could not hear him. The elf was beginning to hear a slight groaning to his left, but he identified the maker of these sounds as Bergil. Of Gimli, there was no sign. Legolas could hear nothing that might indicate the presence of a dwarf in the caves, and this was beginning to frighten the elf greatly.

Legolas did not like to be frightened.
