Why this must be read: The new incarnation of Battlestar Galactica is much more of an ensemble piece than the original, which opens wide new vistas to explore in terms of possible stories. However, some things haven't changed, and one of them is the incredible hotness that is Starbuck/Apollo, even though now it's a het pairing...
"Something Pretty" is my favourite BSG03 fic to date. This is in large part because it presses my friendship-kink button. I love, love, love friendship fics, and in this story Lee is in trouble, and Kara lends him a hand; and if that sounds smutty to you... well spotted. The other thing I adore about this story is how hot it is. So. Fracking. Hot. And a good part of that heat is due to Kara and Lee not wanting to trip over the line from friends to lovers, so every touch feels like a risk, every look a negotiation, every bit of snark an endearment. I didn't even know I had a kink for denial!sex until I read this story.
Apart from the friendship and the hot, though, is another reason to enjoy this story. One of the things that fascinates me about BSG03 is that it's clear that there's going to be serious social engineering practiced on the survivors pretty soon, because the only way that 50,000 people without adequate resources will be able to go on is if their culture is radically and methodically re-engineered. Kate picks up on one of the ideas raised in the mini-series--that the Fleet's birth rate will need to be significantly increased as soon as resources allow--and runs with it, showing us some of the immediate personal consequences for Kara and Lee. This lends a desperate background to the humour of the story, increasing the tension between Kara and Lee in the most wonderful way.
