Why this must be read: It's a rare enough day that Gimli gets a fair shot at being the focus of a fanfic, and a rarer day still when he gets a chance to one-up Legolas. In While the Ring Went South Thundera Tiger manages to do both. Their initial wariness, a dislike that grows into a prank war which sends even Gandalf and Frodo to the end of their wits, and finally a grudging respect, once they are separated from the Fellowship and forced to rely on one another to find their way back.
Set during the early days of the Quest, this fic is basically a very, very long missing scene, covering their journey from Rivendell to Caradhras, and focusing on the growing bonds and tensions within the ranks of the Fellowship.
In the words of the author: "There's a two-week period that Tolkien says absolutely nothing about other than it rained and there were a few cliffs (we're getting to some cliffs, by the way). I decided that these two weeks would be perfect for character introspection. It's a transitional period for most of them, and I wanted to explore that a little by fleshing the story out through a missing scene fic. A rather long missing scene fic, that."
Don't be fooled; it's long and complex, focuses on each member of the Fellowship in turn, and manages to be light-hearted in one chapter, and edge of your seat suspenseful in the next.
"You what?!"
Merry flinched and turned away from the furious demon that Sam had become. Aragorn's announcement about Bill - coming just after everyone had been roused from a rather restless sleep - had probably not been the best way to start the late afternoon. They were gratified to hear that the Warg would no longer trouble them, but the news about Bill... that was something else.
Still, Sam was taking the situation fairly well, at least in a relative sense. The raging gardener had not reduced Strider, Legolas, and Boromir to an odd assortment of body parts. That was something of a victory for Sam's restraint, and Merry made a mental note to compliment him on it as soon as he stopped shouting.
