Why this must be read: Because post-Kyoto stories never get old, because suicide has almost unimaginable ramifications, and because Watari's not a mad scientist - he's angry. His relationship with Tsuzuki, strained almost beyond repair, is beautifully described in this story. Watari's fury, Tatsumi's resignation, Hisoka's helplessness and Tsuzuki's despairing guilt seep through a series of quiet scenes in which all four characters come to terms (of sorts) with what has happened. The final part - comprising of a healing reflection of Tsuzuki's past trauma as well as a simultaneous realisation and rejection of the idea that if you love something, let it go - is particularly moving.

Tsuzuki turned his head towards the clock. A small frown touched his eyes.

"It's late. I thought Watari was going to come over." He looked at Tatsumi. "Have you seen him today?"

"This morning."

Tatsumi picked up an apple and began to peel it, something he seemed to end up doing every time he came to see Tsuzuki. It was easier than looking into those eyes.

"How was he?"

"Quiet."

He hadn't quite pulled the blinds down far enough. Tsuzuki's hands, loose on his lap, cupped liquid golden light. It reminded him fleetingly of Watari in Kyoto, all fire and fury, all words and action and determination.

"Oh."

Tsuzuki turned his hands palm down, spilling the sunset onto the sheets and the backs of his fingers. The room was going grey around the edges now. Before long the light winked out.
