Why this must be read: Because a horror story isn't really doing its job until the reader is feeling almost as much pity for the monster as for the victim. Lost is a disturbing little creepshow that leads the Kyoto story to a tragic place, not least of all for Muraki. There are impossible choices to be made, and a sense of needless yet somehow unavoidable waste saturates the writing to stomach-churning effect. It's not a happy read by any means, but will resonate strongly with any YnM fan who has wondered what might've been.

The hand that reached out was bare, gloves still waiting on the table with his meticulously-prepared instruments. It was a sort of goodbye, and he needed to feel it--his fingertips hovering over Tsuzuki's shoulder before touching skin and drifting down the long arch of spine. Tsuzuki was warm and relaxed, lying as boneless as if he slept, and he looked so trusting, it made Muraki's breath still in his chest. It was an illusion, of course--not even Tsuzuki was fool enough to trust him--but it was the kind of illusion some part of him would have liked to believe.

Blinking down at his hand, he found it splayed across the small of Tsuzuki's back, as if he could soak up this moment of contact and save it for later. For the second time in his life he was hesitating, but he knew it this time, and he could learn from his mistakes.

"I would have kept you," he murmured as he pulled his hand away, watching a single violet eye that stared insensibly into the distance. Tsuzuki never blinked, not even when he reached for the scalpel, not even when he made the first cut. Barehanded.

If it was as close as he'd ever come to the man, he wanted to feel it.
