It’s Always Easier to Run Away by Alison Glover (PG-13)
Fandom: Star Wars: Original Trilogy
Pairing: None
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website: Equally unknown, unfortunately. All attempts to search for her webpage have just lead to several different fic archives. The one linked to at the bottom is the most comprehensive I've found.
Why this must be read:
This is just an amazingly insightful fic, concerning a missing scene in ROTJ when Han goes to talk to Luke as Luke heads to confront Vader. The author pulls together many details in ways I'd never connected them (for example, Luke seeing his aunt and uncle burning in ANH, and the scene in ROTJ where the Ewoks nearly eat Han, Luke, Chewie, etc.), yet it feels very natural. The story pegs Han's thought process dead on, and Luke, Leia, and all the others are very much in character. It's a very thoughtful piece, and one that's well worth reading. Be warned it is a bit long for a one-off, though, so you may want to have lots of time available before starting to read it. :)
Excerpt: Okay, Han, you're going to have to think about what Luke just said sometime, so why not do it now?
"You can't stop hearing Vader?" he temporised.
Luke shook his head. "Not any more. Not here."
Han tried, not totally successfully, to squash the thought that Vader might still have better manners than Kenobi, because at least right now Luke wasn't three-quarters dead of exposure, and could maybe be expected to have some chance of blocking voices in his head. Except for some reason Luke couldn't..... or wouldn't?
"Okay. Why not?" Han gave up and asked.
"He's my father."
"Oh f - !"Han just managed to stop himself from vocalising his immediate reaction to that. While that particular expletive had presumably been relevant to Luke’s parentage at some stage, Han ought to be able to come up with something a little more constructive. Chewie was at least managing to keep his expression under control. Han suspected that he himself was doing an excellent impression of a stunned poolfish.
He convinced his jaw to shut, and decided that ‘so what?’ probably wasn't the comment he should make, either.
It’s Always Easier to Run Away (Note: The site asks not to directly link to stories, so I have linked to the Author's page on the Correlian Embassy instead. I did ask the author for permission to directly link, but they have not responded. If they do, I will edit and put a direct link to the story)
A Note on the Rating: Because none was given, I gave one with the best judgement I was able to figure.
