The Dead Zone: An Overview

I'm Versaphile, and I'll be your tour guide this month for this small but deserving fandom. The Dead Zone is a TV series currently airing on the USA Network, adapted from the Stephen King novel. Spoilers inside have been kept to a minimum, but do touch on all four seasons to date. It's a slash-friendly series with inventive writing, complex characters, impending armageddon, and one doozy of a love triangle.

The Dead Zone
Adjust one detail and all of life changes.

The Dead Zone is the story of Johnny Smith: high school science teacher, favored son, fiance of Sarah Bracknell, and all-around nice guy of Cleaves Mills, Maine. His life is perfect... until a car accident leaves him in a coma for six years. When he wakes up, the world has moved on without him: his mother is dead, and Sarah has married another man--they're raising Johnny's son as their own. The most shocking change of all is his new and bizarre ability: by touching a person or an object, he can see their past and their future. His doctor explains that Johnny sustained severe brain damage in the accident; in order to function, his brain is tapping into an region humans don't normally use to handle sensory perception: his "dead zone."

Just as the coma took away the life he knew, the visions force him into a new one: the reluctant psychic. Johnny must cope with the invasive nature of the visions, both to himself and others. He must find ways to use them to prevent harm, and adjusting to the changes they wreak on his life. Almost all episodes deal with some aspect of this, as a subplot or front-and-center. The media spotlight, the difficult choices, and the physical effects all cause Johnny to periodically withdraw from the world, only to be brought back to it again through the caring of his friends and the need to help. And help he must, because Johnny also has glimpsed a terrible vision of the future, a world of fire and destruction...

[ The Characters ]

"While the plots we tell may be astonishing, it is his relationships with Bruce, Walt and Sarah that keeps Johnny human and real to audiences."

-- From the official Dead Zone Writer's Guide

Johnny Smith

Johnny Smith (Anthony Michael Hall) is the only son of the wealthy Smith family; his grandfather ran a copper mine in the 1940s, and his parents Herb and Vera owned a great deal of land. Herb built the family home, and died when Johnny was young. In high school, Johnny was a star ice hockey player. When he finished college, he returned to Cleaves Mills to become a high school science teacher. Johnny was always unusually lucky, always seeming to know just what number a carnival wheel would stop at, or where his mother left her keys.

Post-coma life presents new difficulties for Johnny. The injuries he sustained in the car accident damaged his leg, and now he must walk with a cane. His visions and infamous celebrity status prevent him from returning to teaching, though he still tutors the neighborhood kids. Though he grew up in Cleaves Mills, many in the town are now wary of him. When he sees dangers, it is difficult to make people believe him, despite his well-publicized track record and the backing of the county sheriff's office and the Faith Heritage Alliance... but Johnny finds a way, with a little help from his friends.

Bruce Lewis

Bruce Lewis (John L. Adams) was assigned to be Johnny's physical therapist after Johnny woke from his coma. But their relationship quickly developed beyond therapist-patient: Bruce is Johnny's best friend, as well as a continuing source of humor, optimism, and inspiration for Johnny. Bruce is the one person that Johnny can always turn to, and someone he can trust with his own life.

Sarah Bannerman

Sarah Bannerman (Nicole deBoer) has known Johnny since childhood. They worked as teachers at the same high school, and became engaged just before Johnny's accident. After Johnny's car crash, Sarah was told he would never recover, so eventually she decided to move on with her life. She married Walt Bannerman, the County Sheriff, and the two of them are raising Johnny's son, J.J. Sarah will always love Johnny and continue to struggle to find ways to make him a part of her life - for J.J.'s sake - without risking her relationship with her husband.

Walt Bannerman

Walt Bannerman (Chris Bruno) is Sarah's husband and the Sheriff of Penobscot County, Maine. Walt frequently calls on Johnny and his psychic abilities to assist in investigations. Painfully aware of Johnny's long and deep-running relationship with Sarah, Walt has come to respect and befriend him while, at the same time, fearing the consequences Johnny may have on his marriage and his relationship with J.J.

Johnny "J.J." Bannerman

Conceived the night of Johnny's accident, J.J. (Spencer Achtymichuk) was brought up by Sarah and Walt as their own son. His true birthright is an open secret--anyone who checks the dates or looks at Johnny and J.J. together could guess the truth--but it isn't until the third season that J.J. is told that strange "Uncle" Johnny is his biological father. Walt is the one who gives the boy his nickname--Johnny Junior.

Reverend Gene Purdy

While Johnny was in his coma, Reverend Purdy (David Ogden Stiers) became his legal guardian, and after the death of Johnny's mother, he gained control her estate. While Purdy certainly craves power and money, his ability to influence people and bring God into their lives through his university and ministry is his primary motivation. He appears to be a man who genuinely believes in what he preaches; he is a hero in his own mind. He views Johnny as someone destined to play an important role in the world - perhaps even fulfilling elements of Biblical prophecy. Purdy tries to be helpful in Johnny's personal journey, but struggles to keep Johnny's trust.

Greg Stillson

Former Bible salesman, womanizer, and fundamentally dishonest - yet irresistible - Greg Stillson (Sean Patrick Flanery) is Maine's newly elected U.S. Congressman. Johnny's visions have told him that Stillson, Purdy, and himself are somehow linked to the future destruction of the world. Johnny sees Stillson as a dangerous and corrupt politician who aspires to the most powerful job in the land and won't let anybody get in his way - including Johnny Smith. But Johnny is determined to prevent Stillson from igniting Armageddon.

Dana Bright

Dana Bright (Kristen Dalton) is an attractive and deeply cynical reporter. She is a writer for the Bangor Daily News, and since Johnny first went public with his visions she has been avidly interested in his activities, billing him as the local "psychic detective." At first a hindrance and later a help, Dana's relationship with Johnny becomes increasingly complex. She also has intimate ties with Reverend Purdy.

Rebecca Caldwell

Rebecca Caldwell (Sarah Wynter) is a psychotherapist who works with juvenile offenders in Washington, D.C. She came to Bangor, Maine, after the mysterious disappearance and murder of her sister Rachel, a recent graduate of Purdy's Faith Heritage University and a campaign documentarian for Greg Stillson. At first, Rebecca suspected Johnny of being her sister's killer, but as she grew to know him, he became the only person she could trust.

[ Plots, Themes, and Relationships ]

"As the series continues, the relationships between Sarah, Johnny and Walt (her husband, the sheriff of Penobscot County) will evolve in complex and unexpected ways. Sarah will be in love with both men. The guys will come to respect, even like and yet fear one another. In time, they may all decide to have the most unconventional three-way love affair ever seen in prime time."

The Visions
The visions Johnny gets take many forms, but all share one thing in common: they are always true. He sees images of the past and of the future, sometimes observing them as if watching a movie, sometimes living them as if he was the person he had touched. Visions can come through objects, connecting them to the people who have or will have handled them. Sometimes the visions are confusing, barely more than short flashes or lacking the necessary context; other times, they are so vivid that Johnny loses himself in them; and some visions are so intense they can cause physical harm.

In the course of the series, Johnny uses his visions in a variety of avenues, averting medical dangers, finding missing persons, warning of natural and man-made disasters, tracking down murderers, solving mysteries of the past, and more. He can even share a vision with another person with similar powers from the past or future when each hold the same object in different times. Despite the grandness of his powers, Johnny stays very much on a personal level. Uninterested in fame or power, he follows his visions to help others, prevent harm, and sometimes just to satisfy his curiosity. The visions aren't triggered by every touch--sometimes it doesn't work--but on an everyday basis he is subjected to dozens of small visions, from letters in the mail, the furniture in his home, or a brush against a stranger on the sidewalk.

Johnny, Sarah, and Walt: Tangled Threesome
When Johnny wakes up, as far as he's concerned it was yesterday that he was engaged to Sarah, his childhood sweetheart. But while he was in a coma, Sarah discovered she was pregnant with his baby. As time passed and every doctor said Johnny would never wake up, Sarah had no choice but to move on. She married Walt, and the two of them raised Johnny's son as their own. There is a great deal of push-pull between the three of them as a result. Sarah's old feelings are reawakened, and she's torn between her old life with Johnny and her current one with Walt. Johnny loves her and has difficulty letting go of his own feelings. Walt fears that Johnny could take back his son and his wife.

Johnny and Walt: Partners In Crime
Walt frequently calls on Johnny to help with investigations, and Johnny frequently depends on Walt for help with his visions. From the very first episode, the two develop a close working relationship, and this grows into deep friendship as the series progresses. Walt is one of Johnny's staunchest defenders, trusting his visions on word alone but always looking for evidence to back them up. Walt's is the first number on Johnny's speeddial (as seen in Grains Of Sand!).

Johnny and Bruce: BFF
Bruce and Johnny bonded while Johnny recovered from his coma, and when it came time for Johnny to leave, Bruce tagged along with him. The two are inseparable (at least, when Johnny isn't totally avoiding human contact) and Johnny considers him family. The importance of Bruce is especially highlighted in two episodes, (Zion 2x12) and (Shadows 3x11). Bruce is the son of a preacher; he rebelled by running away as a kid, but even after rejecting his father's calling he remains a very spiritual person, interested in many different cultural beliefs. He is also the one person Johnny trusts above all else. He's the first one to find out about his vision of the Apocalypse, and to be shown the Boards of Doom. Bruce is caring and lighthearted, and always tries to get Johnny to be more healthy both physically and mentally.

The Faith Heritage Alliance
Reverend Purdy runs the Faith Heritage Alliance, a religious organization dedicated to both the word of god and the rule of politics. The Alliance's right-wing arm supports Greg Stillson's political career. It also owns Johnny's mother's estate, and handles Johnny's media relations and finances. Reverend Purdy was a longtime friend (and rejected suitor) of Johnny's mother. Johnny has become a very reluctant mascot for the Alliance, as Purdy casts his visions into the framework of God. Johnny also has issues with Purdy's relationship with his mother.

Greg Stillson and the Apocalypse
The first time Johnny shakes Stillson's hand, he gets a vision of the apocalypse: Washington DC in flames. Stillson, your standard charismatic slime politician, has designs on the presidency and will stop at nothing to achieve it. He has an assortment of unpleasant associates, from his bullying father to his ex-military campaign aide, Sonny Elliman. Johnny doesn't know exactly how Stillson causes the apocalypse, but keeps looking for any way he can to bring Stillson down in an effort to change the future. This is the mytharc.

The Novel & The Film

The Dead Zone series is based on the Stephen King novel of the same name. An excellent adaptation of the book was filmed starring Christopher Walken. Many of the visual elements of the series are based on the film, particularly Anthony Michael Hall's interpretation of Johnny. However, the original story and the TV series do diverge in important ways and are not shared canon.

I love my comatose bi psychic show!

I’ve just gotten into The Dead Zone (the series, that is — I am currently watching the season one DVDs; I’ve been a fan of King’s novel and Cronenberg’s film for years), so I was thrilled beyond words to see a crack_van overview. And there's a fic and vid masterlist — YES!

Thank you thank you thank you!

Typo alert: you have some stray closing parentheses scattered throughout.

I've only seen a few eps of the series, but love the book and the movie, and, of course, [livejournal.com profile] cesperanza's fantastic fic! I'll be looking forward to your recs.

That was a great summary of the show!! Only thing is that I believe that the town Johnny lives in is spelled "Cleaves Mills" with an 's'. I'll will show this post to anybody that seems interested in knowing "The Dead Zone".

(oh, and sorry about my flub-up with assigning this fandom out. It seems to have worked out okay, though...)

This is excellent! I'd just finished compiling a smallish list of DZ fic links, and I was feeling sad it was so small, and now here you are, dealing out the crack and enabling me. Yay!

Yep, I'll ask phil to take care of it. :)

What a wonderful overview! I think it's great that you used the writer's guide throughout; it really helps to see how the show's creators themselves see the characters. USA's got such great resources on that page. I'm so looking forward to seeing your recs!
