Transfigurations by Resonant (NC-17)

Why this must be read: 'After the War' and 'What Happens Next' fics are a staple in this fandom. And 'Transfigurations' is one of the better and one of the most popular in this genre. Summary: Five years after Voldemort's defeat, Harry returns to England to help re-open Hogwarts, only to find changes in the lives of his friends and enemies that starts a search for peace.
This is an involving novel-length story, with an original, creative plot that obviously took a lot of work to think through. The details are smart and amazing, from the descriptive imagery, the different kinds of magical theories and spells, a distinct look at wizarding culture, a interesting (and often funny) take on life without magic, to the post-war fates of familiar characters. As their fates are slowly revealed to Harry (and to us), it's a touching and very evocative read; for some your heart leaps, others you feel deserved better. And even though you know some deserved much worse, Resonant writes with such compassion for all the for the suffering that has occurred, that you can't help but feel the futility of such. It's very much a story of remembering, laying the past to rest and re-building for the future.
The Harry/Draco relationship is slowly developed, which is refreshing, adding a touch of sex and romance. And although it's not a story of a big grand love affair and it's not the focus, it has lust and heart that works well.
The characterization is good. Harry is portrayed as a mixed character - a venerable combination of doubt, resentment, angst, bravery, sacrifice, goodness and...stupidity, and interacts as such (which is just how it should be!) Draco tends to veers towards fannon, but is sexy and very likable.
A must read.

I don't really read HP... Never got into it, though maybe that might change ;) But I started reading this one because I liked her Sentinel stories very much. And I'm not even half way through and gotta say... it's great!
Now I wonder.. are there more like this out there? Aah, to have the time to go hunting... :)

There are plenty of excellent stories out there. The HP fandom is *enormous*. I've been reading HP for close to two years and it makes me heart jump to think about how many more good fics rec'd to me that I have yet to read.
Although people tend not to congregate in the same places. It splits into different sites/lists/communities that tend to focus on a particular pairing/character/type of story/writer. Which is a huge pain if you're dipping it. However, Fiction Alley (http://www.fictionalley.org) is probably the closest thing to a fandom-wide site. And they have something called Niffles (http://www.fictionalley.org/fictionalleypark/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=24d0d995034af1710526d7885ec6b7e9&forumid=106), which recommends HP fic. About 10 members recommend whatever they like for a few months, then a new set of people take over and so on and so forth. And because there lots of rec'ers, the stories are varied. A good place for newbies to browse and see what they like. I don't know if that's helpful, but I've linked.
And of course, I'd be rec'ing some more wonderful stories on
