Why this must be read:
From The Common People archive (explanation of the project here on that site the the Explanation & Rules page), this is a spooky little story about a girl who notices odd things about a family in her neighborhood. I remembered this tale for a long time after I read it, but I couldn't remember the author or the title, so it took me a while to find it. It's a scene that could happen in a world with mutants hiding among normals, in mortal fear of discovery. This aspect of the X-Men verse strikes at that primal fear created by tales of aliens among us. I also got vibes reminiscent of The Twilight Zone.
