Why this must be read: Yes, the pairing is Vader and Palpatine. Fear not, for this is not the genocidal brooder and the paranoid despot; this is the brilliance of Vader radiating complexity and Palpatine illuminating with his subtlety in and between the flashbacks. I will spare everyone paragraphs of praise, but this tale, with its elegant prose, trapped me into this insidious pair of Sith Lords.
I stand up, suddenly towering over the Emperor. When I spread my arms and stretch my back, I marvel at the new proportions of my body and at the strength inherent in the twined tendon and steel bone of my arms. They are both grotesque and beautiful.
"Only beautiful, my friend," he says quietly as he looks up at me. He touches my chest, his fingers tracing the edge of my cuirass; I feel the touch deep within me and it robs me of my breath.
"If only in the way a lightsaber is beautiful," I say, touching the filigreed steel surface of my new lightsaber grip.
"There's nothing quite as beautiful as a perfect weapon," he replies. His good humour makes me smile, too, and I follow him outside.
