Why this must be read: Yes, I have chosen another pairing Sith pairing, this time in the aftermath of ESB. The existence of Luke Skywalker is proving troublesome for Darth Vader, especially in his relationship with Palpatine. The Apprentice has proven to fail his Sith destiny, seeking to return to the glory and grandeur of his early days. Much angst ensues, because Vader does it so fantastically, but how about some Palpatine angst to compliment that?
“He did not join us.”
“I noticed.” So much coldness in only two words. The Emperor paused, waiting before he continued to psychologically torture the other Sith. “Did he die?”
Bile would have risen up his throat if his body wasn’t regulated so well. Yet, he calmly replied with a quiet and definitive: “No.”
As calmly, Palpatine moved closer; Vader could see the defiant yellow eyes, radiating from the darkness shrouding his face. “You promised me he would.”
“He escaped, my Master.”
“Escaped?”
Palpatine snarled, walking away towards the end of the antechamber. He hid the grimace twisting his emaciated features in the shadows of his cowl. Vader knew what the Emperor was burning to say: ‘You let him go.’ And this was perfectly true. Of course, Palpatine would never admit it. Somehow, Vader strangely felt guilty for what was nothing but the truth – he hadn’t felt ashamed in years. Then, he decided to join his Master in the corner.
“You cannot fulfil the destiny of a Sith Apprentice, can you?”
The question needed no answer; Vader would never dare to reply when the Emperor already knew. No, this apprentice would never kill his Master in the true Sith fashion. Alone. Vader was too frightened of being alone, even if it meant the immense power – the mastery of the Dark Side and so much more – would be his own.
