The Secret Adventures of Jules Verne - Fandom Overview

What if the great author Jules Verne had not just written stories of what would be? What if he had actually seen the future technologies he described in his books, traveled on the Nautilus, gone around the world with Phileas Fogg?

This was the idea that led to The Secret Adventures of Jules Verne. The series could hardly be taken for historical fact (very much a 'steampunk' world, set in 1861 - the real Verne was then in his forties, married, and about to have his first book published), but was a very interesting 'what might have been', none the less.

Jules Verne (Chris Demetral)Jules Verne (Chris Demetral) - A young man, studying law in Paris and writing plays that never last onstage more than two days. A dreamer who imagines the future with its impossibly tall buildings of glass and steel, the technologies that seem pure nonsense from the view of his bohemian friends.

Phileas Fogg (Michael Praed)Phileas Fogg (Michael Praed) - One would be forgiven for taking this Victorian gentleman for what he seems; a gambler, rather disaffected by the world in general.

However, one would not realize this man to have once been a agent of the British Secret Service. At some unspecified point before the series, Phileas and his brother Erasmus undertook a mission that had been compromised from the beginning, leading to Erasmus' death. It also led to the estrangement of Phileas and his father, Sir Boniface - who, as the head of the Service, had been the one to send his sons on that mission.

Rebecca Fogg (Francesca Hunt)Rebecca Fogg (Francesca Hunt) - A distant cousin of Phileas, taken in by Sir Boniface after the deaths of her parents when she was younger. Beautiful, intelligent - and the first female agent in the Secret Service. On occasion, her assignments require her to work with her cousin Phileas, and on occasion, this causes some friction between the two. At times, her assignments also cause her to run independent of Phileas, but somehow the two cousins always seem to wind up helping each other out anyway in the course of events.

Passepartout (Michel Courtemanche)Passepartout (Michel Courtemanche) - Valet, gadget man, and mangler of the English language (and 13 others, if Fogg wasn't just being a smartass). Came into the employ of Mr. Fogg after a game of cards where the gentleman won an airship called The Aurora. The Baron who had wagered the ship informed Fogg that he would need a navigator for it, thus making Passepartout part of the bet (and leading to the fanon theory that Passepartout either designed the ship or at least had a hand in its construction).

The Aurora in flight The Aurora on the groundThe Aurora - the main method of transportation for our main characters. Part home away from home, part traveling lab/workshop.

Count Gregory (Rick Overton)The League of Darkness - The reoccurring villains of the series, trying to keep the world under the rule of their 'aristocracy' by whatever means possible. Led by Count Gregory, a Crusader who had been drawn and quartered (then restored - though not reassembled - by some monks), they would have Verne's ideas for their own purposes, willing or not.

There were 22 hour-long episodes filmed in high definition widescreen (the first series ever filmed with state of the art digital cameras in full HDTV format, actually) in Canada and originally shown on Canada's CBC from June - December 2000. Sci-Fi Channel started showing slightly edited versions of the series in January 2001, first as part of their Friday night lineup, then for some unknown reason, dumping the show in a late Saturday night/early Sunday morning spot. Afterwards, there was a syndicated release of the unedited episodes, though often with equally horrid timeslots.
