Songs of the Flesh by Sharon Cross (NC-17)

Pairing: Duncan/Methos

Why this must be read: This sequel to the previously recommended Specter is an outstanding science fiction story that utilizes immortals' ability to live far into the future. The story is set on distant worlds where earth is just a legend. I found her take on Duncan's struggle with his dark side much more satisfying than the episode Deliverance. Sharon Cross's ability to create believable worlds and cultures, especially the miner colony of Triton is remarkable.
This had to be the Cave of Light. The cavern was diffused with a bright glow and the cave walls were sparkling with color. Veins of white, red, blue, green, silver and gold, were everywhere. It seemed that all of Triton's raw gems were on display. They hung from a dizzying height above the cavern's floor, and looking anxiously upward, he saw Mica's long-toed feet gripping a rock formation on the cavern ceiling. He glanced over at the tunnel they had exited, and realized Mica had leapt at least twenty feet, burdened with his weight.
"Hang on," Mica instructed, and let go of him, freeing his arms. Grunting with effort, he swung them both upward so he could grip the protruding rock above them. "Move around to my back, Chairman, and wrap your limbs around my body, so I can climb down."
Methos did as he was told, holding his breath as Mica scampered along the rocky ceiling to the nearest wall, then climbed easily down it. It was wonderful to set his feet on the floor again. He gazed in awe at the cavern once more, even the floor was gleaming with jewels and he could see individual rough diamonds littering the ground. "This is amazing," he uttered.
"I spent decades slaving in these caverns," stated Mica. "Years of living in darkness and enduring hunger and thirst, beaten without mercy if I didn't reach my daily quota. I watched so many die at the hands of our masters."
The beauty of the caverns lost their appeal with Mica's words. "I'm sorry."
Mica smiled sadly. "Those days are gone. And you are going to collapse if you do not rest. Triton's mines are not kind to those of your race."
