A Quiet War by Merry (R)

First time rec'cing for The Sentinel, but I really believe [livejournal.com profile] crack_van provides a great service for fandom and it's a blast taking a turn at the wheel. I've just gotten to see the show for the first time this year (showing on Space in Canada), and the great news is it's also scheduled for release on DVD this spring! Yay! Now on to the fics ...

Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: Jim/Blair
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] merryish
Author Website: Any Road
Why this must be read: Each time I begin this story, it takes me a little while to embrace it. It's a quiet story in some ways, which makes perfect sense given the title. It's about misunderstanding and lack of communication, but not in a light-hearted humourous way, although the story has its moments. It's about silence and fear and the things people do when they're afraid of losing everything. When they're too afraid to say what they're even afraid of. This is Blair pushing to finish his dissertation and Jim pursuing a relationship with a woman (who is actually likable and good for him) while on some level he waits for Blair to leave him. In the midst of it all is this intense thing between them that they won't talk about and can't give up. Merry's portrayal of their relationship is real and messed up and so beautifully crafted you'll find yourself aching to help them fix what's wrong. It's told from Blair's POV, and it works exceptionally well.

It wasn't the touching, though there'd been enough of that. It wasn't the looks or the silences. It was the way all of it fit together, a slow and basic change in the way Blair Sandburg got handled behind Jim's eyes. It made me nervous, it scared me, and it made me angry in a weird, mind-fucked kind of way. I liked the time before my dissertation turned into a wall between us, the time when it was just us doing the stuff we did and doing it great. The time when being together wasn't work.

I wanted it back.

He didn't move because he couldn't, because I was right in front of him and to move he'd have to acknowledge my existence by detouring around me. On a better day I might've had a little fun waiting him out, but this wasn't a better day, it was this day, and I wasn't in the mood. I had a deadline.

I didn't need this.

So I shoved him.

Read the story: A Quiet War, and don't forget to feedback the author!
