Why this must be read: One of the nice things about The Sentinel (TS) fandom is that even the gen has a lot of subtext. The guys just have an affectionate relationship - even when they don't know each other. This story's an AU, and although I'm not always that fond of AUs, I found this particularly compelling. Jim's a prison guard. Blair's on death row for murder. The circumstances of how Blair got there and what Jim is willing to do to help him are fascinating. You find yourself waiting breathlessly with Jim, longing for his moments when he can meet with Blair.

Ellison glanced from monitor to monitor, but invariably, his gaze was drawn back to the last cell. Sandburg hadn't moved since they left him, except to pick up a calendar from the shelf above the bed. Jim watched in fascination as the prisoner used a finger to count each square up to the 23 circled in red on the second page. Thirty-four days. The warden had said that in about a month the man would be put to death, by his own refusal to appeal.

Jim narrowed his gaze as Sandburg counted again. The camera was in the perfect spot to see where the fingertip landed. One, two, three, skip the next three. One, two, three, skip the next three. With a start, Jim realized that Sandburg was counting out his work schedule. The look on Sandburg's face told Jim everything he needed to know. The kid was scared. Of him.

Taking a minute to reflect on that, he tried not to feel too smug. Then he tried to hang onto that feeling as he was overcome with shame. Sandburg's lips moved, but the angle was wrong to see what he was saying and the sound was turned off. If his hearing had been acting up at that moment, Jim had no doubt he would have heard the words. Then Sandburg disappeared under the bunk.

Read the story: The Long Good-Bye, and don't forget to let the author know you liked it.

There's also a slashy sequel/alternate ending by Nancy Taylor called Do Not Go Gentle (Into That Good Night) if you need more of this story.
