Why this must be read: I've been quite gratified to see Beaver (Cassidy) getting some depth in S2, and Buffyx does an excellent job fleshing out the character more in this story. The Beaver-voice feels fresh and right, conveying his confusion, longing and a bit of self-indulgent pity as well. I particularly love the detail given to his relationship with his mother, even though we got a slightly different version of the ex Mrs. Casablancas later on in the show.

Her face shifted, everything shifted, the air didn’t feel the same.

"I don’t think..." she started, and her voice had changed. She was pulling away from him already, he could feel it. "Listen. I don’t think that can work. I mean, I have trouble trying to remember to change Gin’s litter box, so how could I--?"

She trailed off and tried to laugh, but it sounded hollow. Beaver’s heart felt like it was made of lead and hardening in his chest.

"Old dog, new tricks." Her smile was tight, like it hurt; it looked like the smiles he’d seen before, the ones in the photographs. "You know?"

"Yeah," he replied, and the word felt flat in his mouth. "Okay."

"Cassidy," she said softly, and touched her hand to the top of his head, "oh, Cass."

And then she grew really quiet, turned and walked out of the room, leaving him there, sitting on top of the rumbling dryer. Alone.
