Why this must be read: Anything by Penumbra is gold, but this remains my favorite Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan of all time. It is quiet, powerful, beautiful, and speaks of the depth of emotion, an unspoken intensity between them. Few fics actually make me believe in this couple like this did. The setting and tone is perfect, believable, and touching. The ending is fulfilling and just right. A haunting, bittersweet story where every word matters; Penumbra is a mistress of prose.
On a good day, Obi-Wan Kenobi could forget that he was a flawed Jedi. It was during the long nights that he felt his failures.
Out on the roof terrace of the Jedi Temple, the air was cool and thick with the scent of exhaust fumes. Obi-Wan watched the pearl strings of light on Coruscant's starless night sky, wondering about these people that were in such a hurry to be elsewhere, never satisfied with where they were now. It was a feeling he knew very well.
"Why are you so restless, Obi-Wan?"
At the sound of the familiar voice, Obi-Wan turned and leaned his hip against the balustrade. "I don't know, Master," he said, though he well knew why. "Because of the mission, perhaps."
Qui-Gon came to stand next to him, so close Obi-Wan could feel the warmth from his body. The thought thrilled him and he turned quickly, grateful that the dim light would conceal his flush. He gripped the durasteel balustrade with sweating palms and cursed his weakness. Attachment leads to jealousy, he reminded himself, feeling both humbled and resentful of Master Yoda's words, though he acknowledged them as the truth. He closed his eyes and tried to push his feelings down; they did go away, but reluctantly so.
"Yes, I share your apprehensions."
Obi-Wan's heart skipped a beat. He opened his eyes and glanced sideways at his Master. "What apprehensions?"
"The Force grows darker in the distant horizon," Qui-Gon said, his eyes narrowing as he stared into the night. "There is something coming, a shift in the balance of the Force."
"Sometimes, change can be for the good."
Qui-Gon turned his head and smiled. "So you have been listening to me after all."
"You can be very... vocal in your criticism, Master," Obi-Wan said, in his most neutral tone.
