Whisper to the Wild Water by agentjedi (PG)
Fandom: STAR WARS OT
Pairing: Gen
Length: 1,200 words
Author on LJ:
agentjedi
Author Website: agentjedi's Fanfiction.net Profile
Why this must be read:
This story takes place shortly after the end of Star Wars: A New Hope. Obi-Wan has gone from hating Anakin and wanting him to suffer for his crimes after the end of Revenge of the Sith to silently haunting Darth Vader after Vader discovers the name of the pilot who destroyed the Death Star. Obi-Wan does not appear to Vader, but he tries and fails to make his peace with his old apprentice. He now blames himself and his pride for Anakin's fall. Qui-Gon has told him that there is hope for Anakin, but Obi-Wan is convinced that all that was good in Anakin is dead, consumed by the Dark Side. Yet, he still silently seeks for forgiveness from Vader, believing he will never receive it.
This is the second story in my pseudo Obi-Wan trilogy. As I noted in my first
crack_van recommendation this month, each story in the trilogy is written by a different author. In fact, these stories only form a trilogy in my own mind, but it is remarkable how well they fit together and how each story flows naturally to the next. Each story in the trilogy nicely illustrates what I imagine Obi-Wan's frame of mind to be during the time period in which the story is placed. The trilogy as a whole shows the progression of his thoughts and feelings from the end of Revenge of the Sith through to the end of Return of the Jedi.
For the first and third stories in my pseudo trilogy, please see my first Crack Van entry here and my next entry here.
* * *
"Yes, my Master," you acquiesce to the cold, aphotic creature that flickers above your supplicant form. As his image fades, you rise to your feet and stare into the darkness, lost in thought. I feel the tenebrous memories swirling about you, your anger and accusations toward me. Once you accused me of holding you back, not allowing you to reach your full potential. You thought I had lied to you.
Now you know the truth which even he, your son, does not know. It is he who I deceived. It is he to whom I lied.
Could you believe me if I said I did it out of my love for you?
The sound of your breathing echoes through the empty chamber that has become your existence. Because of me.
No, I wouldn't believe me, either.
