The Lodger by Mad Martha (PG)
Fandom: HARRY POTTER
Pairing: Harry/Draco Ron/Hermione
Author on LJ: N/A
Author Website: Mad Martha's Fics
Why this must be read: Another 'After the War' fic, this takes place years after the war and the death of Voldemort (which happens to be one of the best ways of dispatching the evil sod! Hurrah!) where Harry is alone and Hermione decides he should find lodger. Cue Draco. The plot may not sound like a rip-roaring must-read, but Mad Martha infuses the story with telling details of the lives of Harry and Draco, Ron and Hermione, the workings of The Ministry, the wizarding community, the effects of the war on all the familiar, much loved characters, and the fascinating and complex dynamics that come along with that, from the trio's fragile friendship but strong bonds, to a subtle and sweet Harry and Draco, whose positions in the wizarding world mirrored each other whilst being worlds apart. Their interactions with each other is an absorbing and involving read.
However, the best things is the characterisation. Harry is very believable as an angry, melancholy man who hates to overburdening his friends with his problems to the extent that he shuts them out. And Draco is very well drawn; lonely and suffering because of his name, but still proud, vigilance and self-preserving, as opposed to Harry's lack of care of what's around him and disregard for his own life. Both feel like real people and rarely slip into cliched roles. Although it may tend to veer towards angst, the lightly written tone keeps the story from becoming melodramatic, in particular in regards to Harry's situation. Their relationship, compared to most slash, is a slow burn of friendship, and a realistic development. And another standout is Ron, who is clever and much more aware than most fics give him credit for. His affection for Harry just shines through.
This is a really good story.
