The Sentinel / The Professionals (PG-13)

I hope I won't get into too much trouble for posting late, but I wasn't able to get to a computer last night.

There are many excellent Sentinel crossovers. It seems to mesh well with other fandoms. When I first started looking through my collection of Sentinel stories for ones I wanted to rec on Crack Van it seemed like almost every one that caught my eye was a crossover. So it wasn't easy to pick one and I more or less ended up throwing darts :-)

Title: You Watch the Hippy, I'll take Goldilocks, by Gil Hale
Pairing: none
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: Gil Hale's Literary Leaflets
Why this must be read:

How could anyone resist a story with a title like 'You Watch the Hippy, I'll take Goldilocks'?

In this AU crossover Jim Ellison, detective, and Bodie, visiting English CI5 operative, have been assigned to work together to find escapees from the Cascade Guide Facility, but they are more interested in working the drug case Jim was ordered to abandon. To their surprise, the two cases prove to be related and they are forced to reevaluate their own prejudices regarding Guides and their capabilities.

Gil Hale writes lively, witty stories with real plots and emotional resonance. As an extra treat, this one has two sequels. I'm not familiar with The Professionals, but that didn't prevent me from enjoying these stories.

Excerpt

Anger with Bodie made Doyle abandon the last element of caution. They needed proof. He thought he knew one way to get it. "Do you think your labs could trace the chemical connection between guide medication and this drug?" Doyle asked Ellison. "That would be a start."

"If they could get hold of any guide medication, maybe. It's only available in the facility and to registered guides. The penalties for possessing it are one hell of a deterrent. And you can imagine the reaction from Kincaid if Major Crimes ask for some to analyse. That would really show our hand."

Doyle looked at the two sentinels, trying to read their emotions and failing. He was going to have to take a big risk if he did what he was thinking of doing. Ellison he trusted, but he would be asking Ellison to ignore the possession of illegal substances, and he wouldn't like it. Bodie, cool and shuttered, he didn't trust at all. But what choice was there?

Slowly he walked over to the kitchen area and brought back a handful of the guide meds. "Here," he said briefly, tipping them into Ellison's hand. "That should be enough. You'll need to get someone discreet to do the lab work."

Ellison looked down at the tablets in his hand and his face hardened. Doyle watched him silently, seeing his jaw clench as he dealt with this evidence of the company he was keeping.

"You know how illegal this is," Ellison stated, his voice cold and impersonal now.

"It's how we survive," Doyle said flatly. "Without these we'd be quite quickly battered into insanity by the emotions around us. They're as necessary for us as medication would be for someone with asthma or epilepsy. With them we can lead relatively normal lives."

"If you can call drug dependency a normal life," Bodie put in smoothly, getting a glare from both of them.

"By controlling the supply, Security One makes it impossible for unbonded guides to survive outside their facilities. Can you imagine the reaction if that was done with something like insulin?" Doyle went on, only talking to Ellison. He doubted if Bodie really cared either way.

Ellison stood there struggling visibly with the legacy of years of conditioning and prejudice, and to Doyle's increased respect, finally nodded. "All right. I'll get this into the labs tomorrow morning. I'll see that someone I can trust works on it and the results only go to me."

PS. Yes, it's that Kincaid.

Other than the fact that "Hippie" is spelled wrong, this is a delightful story.

Finally something that can be really counted as Gen. Gil Hale's work is marvelous.

Sorry, I wanted to say something encouraging, but it didn't come over that way, did it? :-( I obviously haven't seen all recs (I don't use LJ daily), but I found some interesting discussion in the last two(?) - although some comments were a bit harsh. Have to agree though with the poster who said that two naked men, entwined, screaming in ecstasy do not look like gen to her. I found that pretty funny. So, all I wanted to say is that I like Gil Hale and that she really writes gen. Phew! I apologise if it didn't sound like the positive comment it was meant to be.

I only know the sentinel from fan fic, (don't know it it ever screened in the UK) as for Pros this is a really in character story (Cowley too) which is always difficult in an AU. I particularly liked Bodie using the picture of Doyle and Blair in bed to get the girls, that is exactly right!

Thanks for explaining. Perhaps I'll look up the other recs one day if I can find the time. Anyway, my interest in the discussion gen vs. slash is purely academic, as I'll read anything, gen, slash, rape, mpreg, death, as long as it's well written - and provided I've time enough. Thanks again and have fun with the recs.

P.S. Have you thought of reccing something by Hephaistos? She's pretty funny, too.

I just noticed that your rec of this story has been wrongly attributed to me in "Delicious". Do you know how to correct the error?
