One Tree Hill – An Introduction

OK, I’ve never done anything like this before so please just scroll on by if I suck too badly. When I first got the idea to take part in this lil thing I was gonna do it all written from the point of view of Dan Scott…he is my alter ego when I RPG after all…but then in the last episode the writers went a whole new direction and my summary and I got totally JOSSED. This recap has been delayed while I’ve edited, suffice it to say that a lot of the story line all comes back around to Dan and his past and how the folks of Tree Hill are or are not related to him.

I should also mention that although I’m skeptical, as of this writing there’s whispering in the winds that with the new WB/UPN merger thing that One Tree Hill is in danger of being cancelled. I’m not sure if that’s the case, as I understood they were merging so they could actually fill a full week schedule with programming, meaning both networks would keep all their current prime time shows…but what do I know about it. I’m just yer average fangirl who got hooked on a WB program for nostalgia’s sake. See, I played basketball in high school, I was never really very good and I certainly wasn’t popular but I can relate to a small mid-western town obsessed with their high school team.

Because this is a smaller fandom, fan fiction for this show isn’t quite as easy to track down as for other programs. I think because their target audience is younger, it includes a goodly number of Mary Sues who just want to “be with” Lucas or Nathan. Then, there is the predictable het-fic for the various relationships represented in canon. And of course there Slash to be found. Myself, I am a little squicked by the slashing of Nate/Lucas or Dan/Keith as they are after all brothers, but there are assorted friends and teammates for Nate and Lucas which occasionally get slashed. There is also lots of potential for fem-slash with authors choosing between all the teen-aged girls and even Karen/Deb. In canon often the fem-slash is just right there in your face, as most of the girls have been shown on screen sleeping together and one story-line included a bi-sexual character.

One Tree Hill is set in a small town in North Carolina where the most important thing is basketball. High school basketball. At first glance, it may seem as if this show is like all the other WB programs with pretty faces and aimed squarely at the 12-24 market. They've got youth, beauty, brains and... basketball. But, there is also a fully formed adult cast and a history filled with bretrayal that will hold and entertain most any fangirl. So flying in the face of all the other recaps and show summaries I’m starting this thing off with Dan Scott and building out from there.

The story really begins some 18 years before season one. We have Dan Scott, who is the captain of the basketball team. Just your average jock who thinks he rules the school. His girlfriend is of course the head cheerleader Karen Roe. I’ve always believed it was on Prom Night but am not sure if they’ve made it clear; but Karen gets pregnant. Dan, being the ass that he is, refuses to marry her and goes away to college as if it’s no big deal. Karen stays in Tree Hill, has a son, Lucas and raises him alone.

Meanwhile, Dan apparently doesn’t know how to buy condoms because his college girlfriend, Deb, also gets pregnant. Deb comes from a wealthy family and in a switch from his previous actions Dan marries her. After they both graduate they move back to Tree Hill with their son, Nathan, knowing that Karen and Lucas live across town. The boys are only three months apart in age.

Fast forward to 16 years and to Season One, we find: Years in the making, a conflict unfolds as the two boys struggle to come to terms with who they really are and with a father who has chosen to live vicariously through Nathan while ignoring the existence of Lucas, and that conflict affects everyone in their tangled web. Their lives were taking separate paths until the day Lucas is asked to join the basketball team. The half-brothers then battle it out for control of the court.

One Tree Hill is from show creator Mark Schwahn (The Perfect Score), executive producers Mike Tollin, Brian Robbins, Joe Davola (Smallville) and Ann Hamilton (thirtysomething, Party of Five) for Tollin/Robbins Productions and Warner Bros. Television Production Inc.

Here ends my introduction to One Tree Hill...watch for my next post including summaries of the plot lines for the first and second seasons.

ETA: thanks to [profile] callmesandy for correcting me on the state where Tree Hill is located. Sandy also adds that given the large decrease in ratings OTH had this season, it's definetly on the most likely cancelled list. Go hereto show your support of OTH.

Yay for OTH on [livejournal.com profile] crack_van, though I have some corrections.

The WB & UPN are merging because both are plagued with low ratings - as they both air programs Sunday-Friday for two hours, there will be plenty of shows soon to be cancelled because they have too many to air. Given the rather large decrease in ratings OTH has had this season, it's definitely on the most likely cancelled list.

The show has made it clear that Tree Hill is in North Carolina (not mid-western at all. If it had been we might have been spared the actor who plays Tim's horrible attempt at a southern accent in the first season) and much of the filming is done in Wilmington, NC. (When Peyton & Brooke go to the college party where Peyton is nearly date-raped, it's at Duke, which is close enough to for them to drive to.)

I hope CW keeps it - season 3's been awesome!

Thanks hon! Just FYI, you've got some weird formatting in this post that you may want to edit. ♥
