"Lay Down Your Sword" series by Sandra McDonald (PG-15)

Fandom: HIGHLANDER
Pairing: various relationships are within the story - Duncan/other, Methos/Ceridwyn, Richie/Felicia - but none of them are the particular focus.

Why this must be read:

And for my last HL rec, I give you the mother-epic, fic-to-end-all-fics, post-apocalyptic, Gathering, make-you-cry-for-all-the-pain-sorrow-and-hope, "Lay Down Your Sword" trilogy.

I've mentioned Sandra is a fabulous writer, yes? Good. The series takes place several centuries in the future; global warming has melted most of the ice caps, an inter-governmental group called SIDI is hunting Immortals down, and Methos is leading a small group of Immortals to withdraw from the world. And Richie? Well, there's a lot of interesting things going on with Richie.

I'm not sure what else to say without giving many of its surprises, but take the "epic" description seriously - it spans centuries, employs many flashbacks and ancient memories (as any fic that has Methos in it should) and digs deeply into your emotions. This was the fic that convinced me that Sandra knew something about Immortals that the rest of us didn't - that maybe she was one in disguise, or knew one herself - so wonderfully did she capture the feeling of Immortals - the weariness, the wonder, the joys and the tragedies.

Listed below: the main trilogy, the prequel, and a brief outlying chapter (think of it as part of the director's cut).

Epicenter - the prequel. Not necessary to enjoy the trilogy, but it adds a hell of a lot. Methos, Duncan, and Richie take on a mind-controlling Immortal.

Come to Dust

Rain Must Fall - the extended edition, or director's cut chapter from "Come to Dust." Like "Epicenter," not necessary, but it adds something.
