Time Flies You Can't (The Da Sou Qiang Remix) by Sabine (NC-17)

Why this must be read:
I can't believe this hasn't been recced. This is, to me, a quintessential Firefly story, and one of the earliest Mal/River stories out there. Written for the 2004 Remix challenge (and thus, pre-movie), Sabine takes Molly's well worth reading post-"Objects in Space" story, Waking Hours and kicks it up a notch with a brilliant River voice, as River is learning to be a girl again, to want and fight and fuck and kill, but she's still not quite right. It's beautifully River, dealing with how she's handling the Simon/Kaylee, and with Inara's absence and what that's done to Mal, and how she tries to help Mal and help everybody, and she just tries so hard to do everything right but she's all askew and she knows it. This story had me on the edge of my seat when I first read it, wanting to know what River was going to do next, and rereading it two years (and a movie) later, it still pulled me along, helpless in its wake. Utterly fantastic, and highly recommended. It's Sab's only Firefly story to date, but maybe we can convince her to write more.

This girl body does what she asks it to, when she asks it, but sometimes when she doesn't ask nicely enough she finds it does what it pleases. She's been teaching it when to kiss and when to kill, though it wants to do both those things all the time. If they knew, if Mal knew, if Simon knew what she knows they would throw a party for her willpower, a zui wu hui for her flesh instead of her presence, for its change and its control. But today she's allowed to kill, Mal told her to kill, and her body's so grateful it wants to leak and bleed.
