Why this must be read: Rhoddlet is a distinctive writer in HP. Her stories are normally stripped down snapshots in time, leaving an honest and emotive read. Her style seems to be writing around silences, which conversely leads you to focus in on them and what's just under the surface. And even though there's a lack of true resolution, her pitch is right on target, so her quiet stories indicate rather than tell but suggests enough to glean, so you're not left reading something so ambiguous and so vague it's unsatisfying. Waterworld is probably the fic that most people will name in association with Rhoddlet. Cicadas is probably the one that broke the most people. And both are frequently mentioned on most rec lists. However, I want to point to Stand by Me, which I find very haunting. And this is quite an appropriate analogy, as in this fic Harry is a ghost haunting Hermione and Draco at the Malfoy Manor. Draco deceptively breaks your heart in this, as will the end of this story.
