About a Girl by Molly (PG-13)

Why this must be read:
This story is about River, before the Academy, and then after, and how she's trying to heal, to be a girl again. How Serenity helps her. How she tries to help Mal fill the empty spaces. This story is lyrical, delicate, and heartbreaking, with a pitch-perfect River, ragged and jagged and wanting to be useful, wanting to be loved. Amazing.
She can do anything, really, except the things she wants. In the lab she forgot how to be a girl. They tied her down and tied her up, tied River into a shape not like a girl like a pretzel like a maze. She opened her eyes and saw blue, not people, and she went inside her head and it wasn't River anymore, didn't wind and flow like proper.
They put up a dam and stopped her up and she has been drowning ever since, because girls don't live in labs with whispers and secrets. Girls run fast fast behind their brothers and tumble into the lake and learn to swim like fish so they won't be left behind.
