Why this must be read: Because it's funny, hot, sweet, and utterly convincing. And I don't find most Xander/Spike stories at all believable, so I consider this quite an accomplishment.
The structure of this story is particularly interesting. Anna describes this story as "a season in other rooms," and it really does read like a lost B-plot from the show itself. The fact that the banter is utterly wonderful helps with this, of course.
