GUTTERSTARS by [livejournal.com profile] poisontaster (PG)

Why this must be read:

First off, I'm [livejournal.com profile] jebbypal and I'm driving the van for Firefly this month. I'm going to be doing a little bit of everything, but it will all be gen fics and mostly by authors that have somehow been woefully overlooked in the recs department.

To start things off, I'm reccing a pre-series fic by [livejournal.com profile] poisontaster. Be sure to comment if you read her stuff because so far I've been losing the battle to get her muse back into Firefly writing. Darn that Supernatural fandom and those angsty boys.

Gutterstars is probably one of the very first fics by poisontaster that I read and it exemplifies everything that makes me so happy that we've won the fight to get her to come out of the closet into fandom. The writing is tight, the words are music, and she always manages to find a unique take on characters that adds dimensions to canon ones and brings her OCs to life. Gutterstars is a gritty look at what Simon may have gone through to get information about River and find a way to get her back. As poisontaster says in her author notes: I was crippled by the image of Simon waking up in a gutter all bloody and calling River's name. Her intro chapter will cripple you as well and force you to read the entire story.

"River--" He wakes calling her name and gets a mouthful of muck for his trouble.

Simon rolls onto his back--too fast--and the world revolves around him. Andnot in a good way. The gritty foulness in his mouth and nostrils makeshim choke and then retch. Another fast twist and he spews thin sootybile into the gutter.

The gutter. That's where he's woken. He wishes it was the first. No, scratch that; he wishes it's the last. But probably not. Why is it that clandestine so often has to be filthy as well?

Sittingup, he pats his pockets, still numb and sickened. At least they seem tohave left him with his ident card this time, whoever they are. Best not to ask, he's learned. He's always been a quick study. Though not, he reflects ruefully, quite quick enough.

Bloodand other best-left-unnamed fluids drip from his straight, fine hair, black in the sulfur colored street light. Simon touches with gingerfingers and finds a gash in his scalp, tender to the touch, but not tooworrisome. He looks at his chrono. Or really, the pale place where hischrono had been.

Gutterstars --- Be sure to leave nice feedback to encourage the muse.
