Excavations by Chris C (PG-13)

Why this must be read:

Excavations takes everything you speculated about the beginning of the Horsemen and turns it on its head. It's a tale of honor that begins with a dig on The Discovery Channel – dig that reveals Methos' people, his family, and the reason he became Death. And as Methos reveals more and more of his memories to MacLeod and Joe, they struggle to come to terms with how different the world was then and how they've treated Methos since the Horsemen incident.

"I've often criticized your black-and-white vision of the world, MacLeod, but truth is, even you see thousands of shades of grey, compared with our world. They had slept with the enemy, and it didn't matter at all that it was not their free will, that they had been raped. The fact that they had been dishonoured, and only the fact, counted. Our world existed only in black and white; friend or foe, my brother or my enemy, a faithful wife or a whore, to protect or to kill. These were my decisions, this was my world -- our world. Lots and lots of black, and only very little white. And this little white was forged by two absolutes: blood and honour. This was the solid base of my life. This was how I was, what I was: an honourable man, chieftain of an honourable people."

This is one of the handful of fics that lets me see a Methos who existed in a time and culture completely alien to our own.

Thank you for reminding me of it.
