Subcutaneous and Splinter by Maria Nicole
Fandom: X-FILES

Why this must be read:
Maria Nicole's work is, to my mind, somewhat unjustly passed over during discussions of the best writing in the fandom. Her plots are interesting, her prose is consistently smooth and creative, her dialog excellent, and she has a particularly good insight into Mulder. The characters in her stories are adults, and it's clear she cares for them, but they also get to be fallible human beings. She shows a special awareness of family dynamics and the complexity of human relationships.
Subcutaneous and Splinter comprise a story series set during season 6, a mytharc story involving, as Maria says, Lies, betrayal, malfunctioning implants, functioning nanotechnology, a warehouse, a funeral, a threat, a job offer, and spackling.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.
