Why this must be read

I don't do slave-fics. I really don't. So, I started to read Forsaken very reluctantly, ready to drop it. And then, something happened and I couldn't stop reading. Because Forsaken is so much more than just a slave-fic, I was hooked, for good, and I still can't explain why, really. I thought about it before reccing the fic and finally I found out that what makes this fic so fascinating, so extremly addictive isn't the sex (very very hot sex), or the BDSM, or the slave stuff. No. The really amazing, awesome thing about the fic is how palpable, heartbreaking, Methos' pain is here. I can feel it, really. He's been betrayed by Mac -to the point of nearly being killed, and he's yearning for revenge, but revenge doesn't help and even when he wins, he still loses because the wound in his heart and his mind and his soul is still bleeding.

Forsaken leaned forward on velvet-clad elbows, eyes on the young man. Here was a lad afire with youthful idealism and he'd no doubt where that had come from. Now he allowed himself to look at the Highlander again.

"Duncan MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod," he said softly. "It's been a long time."

The Highlander looked exactly the same, damn him. The hair was longer and worn in a thick braid down his back after the style of Arlington. Otherwise, he was the same criminally attractive bastard.

"Your Majesty." The dark head bent, a small smile touching those beautiful lips. The eyes, however, held dismay -- as well they should.

Forsaken was unprepared for the rage that shook him. He turned again to the boy king, who was perceptive enough to know that something had just gone terribly wrong.

"My terms for ceasing the war are as follows," said Forsaken. "You will remove all but a minimum of troops from your borders -- a withdrawal that will be matched by Onyx. I require safe passage for my troops through Arlington in the event of hostilities with Talas. And, as my tribute, you will give me Duncan MacLeod."

It's a very long fic (four parts), and the plot is riveting. It's post-apocalyptic and dark, but hopeful. It's well written. There's a baddie... You'll love to hate him... So go read Forsaken
