Why this must be read: Written for the Sam/Jack Ficathon last year, this story is a wonderful example of how complicated Sam and Jack can make things sometimes. The writing is clear and resonant, the characterisations lovely.
Last time the Colonel handed her a folder, Lieutenant Stevenson had told his wife about the Stargate, the Goa'uld and the Asgard, the conversation recorded by random surveillance and played before General Hammond.
Sam had read the contents of the folder twice, closed it, and handed it back to the Colonel. She didn't ask him why he'd shown it to her.
Later that day, she'd looked at her feet when Stevenson discussed his wife's pregnancy with Major Saunders in the lunch line. Three days later, he didn't come in to work.
Sam likes to think that he and his family were relocated to some friendly, allied planet because she doesn't like to think about the alternatives.
