Fandom: HORNBLOWER Pairing: none Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: Archived at SailslashWhy this must be read: Hello! I'm Nige and I'll be dealing Hornblower this month. My taste runs mainly towards Horatio/Archie, but I hope to bring a little variety in and so today I am reccing one of my favourite ever gen stories. The Mr Pipps series is one of the funniest fics I have ever had the pleasure to read, and I return to it whenever I feel like a laugh. Inzevar hits her stride a third of the way into the first story and just doesn't let up from then on. The series is of the sort that delights in exploiting prevalent character cliches, but a lot of humour also lies in its pokes at 18th century life, and, especially, naval life. Marvel as Horatio thrashes Frogs, Dons, and the Mrs Bowles and Bracegirdle at the Naval Wives Whist Drive! Gasp in horror as Archie has fits of the Shakespeares! Wonder at the sheer amount of trouble Mr Pipps can cause! And will Captain Pellew ever have the most tastefully decorated Captain's cabin in the fleet? ( An excerpt or two )The stories are in order: From Here to Profanity, Mr Pipps and the Prize Ship, Mr Pipps Saves the Day, Mr Pipps and the Examination for Lieutenant, and Mr Pipps Visits the Doctor.

Fandom: QUEER AS FOLK USA Pairing: Brian and Justin Author on LJ: severina2001Author Website:Here and NowHeya! I'm Jaymalea and I'll be your guide for the month of March. For my first rec, we'll visit Severina, and a First Season look at Valentine's Day, Brian and Justin style. Why this must be read: Building a relationship is never easy, and for Brian and Justin it is even less so. This story encompasses the dichotomy of anxiety and uncertainty that overlays their relationship, and the instinctive connection and understanding of each other that underlies it. It illustrates concessions that they each make consciously and unconsciously in order to accommodate the other. All while maintaining the humor we see in the show and while staying true to the characterizations. ( Excerpt )Best Laid Plans

Fandom: ROSWELL Pairing: Max/Kyle Author on LJ: N/A Author Website: N/A Why this must be read:"But he told himself that he couldn't take his eyes off the two of them because he was attracted to Tess. And he had to be. Because if he wasn't attracted to Tess, he would be attracted to Max."That pretty much says it all. This is a Season one Kyle characterization that I just love. Aware of his own conflict and yet, refusing to deal. This story is short, sharp, and has a thread of slyness running through it, a smirking tone that makes me smile. It also leaves me saying "lots of girls, lots of girls" in head every time I read it. Lots of Girls

Fandom: BLAKES7 Pairing: None Author on LJ: ? Author's Website: ? Why this must be read:The Way Back, the first B7 episode, gives the impression that there'll be a lot more politics in the show than actually panned out. Nor has this been a preoccupation of fanfic writers, so this would be worth reading in any event for its dual glimpse into both the "opulent" post-Federation world and the pre-TWB revolutionary movement, where the Freedom Party and the Alpha Revolutionaries didn't exactly play nicely and share their toys: He was FP, I was AR. They hated us; well maybe that's a little harsh; they DESPISED us. [...]They believed us to have elitist credentials, argued that even the phrase 'Alpha Revolutionary' was an oxymoron! We were just a great deal more honest than they, about what we hoped to achieve. In addition to being an excellent entry in the annals of Political B7, this story is formally very sophisticated and handles its shifts of time and voice beautifully. It's also a kind of B7 noir, because its narrator, although formally a historian, really serves the function of an LA private eye: wandering around being told things (many of them lies) in order to wind up learning something she really would prefer not to have known. The secret at the heart of the labyrinth? Well, it's a properly disheartening idea of what the throughline of the series really is. The Real Life of Roj Blake

Fandom: THE WEST WING Pairing: CJ Cregg/Toby Ziegler Author on LJ: pene has an LJ, while Author Website: August has a website ( the archipelago of angst) Why this must be read: This is history and angst and the ultimate, ultimate "How CJ and Toby met" story. Sorkin et al. have been kind enough not to contradict this version of history, and even if they should, I'd personally never believe it. You should read it for lines like, They can only ever afford to acknowledge the edge of things, which has stuck with me from day one. You should read it for the banter and the twenty long years, Vietnam and Springsteen and Andi and the campaign and Rosslyn. For the handle these two fine ladies have on the critical voice of the West Wing characters, and the heartbreaking, breath-catching language. Read it for quotes like: ( the meeting, put succinctly )And for quotes like: ( this unending catastrophic thing )Because at the heart of it, CJ and Toby and their maybe-maybe-not romance is just one of those things you can't turn away from. Because I can hardly believe my luck that no one has recced it before! It's one of my favorite stories, anywhere, fanfiction or professionally published. It's phenomenal. It's Retina Burn(By the way, I'm Shaye, your March Crack Van delivery driver for The West Wing. It'll be almost-all CJ and Toby, almost-all the time 'round here, but I've got some other treats headed your way, too.)
