Hi. I'm Irmelin, and I'll be your Horatio Hornblower reccer this month. I hope my recs will bring you much enjoyment.Fandom: HORATIO HORNBLOWER Pairing: Horatio/Archie Author on LJ: widget285Author Website: The WidgeteriaWhy this must be read:A lovely story that portrays the friendship between Horatio and Archie. I love stories that focus on Archie's wit and cleverness rather than the angstier aspects of his personality and this is such a fic. Both Archie and Horatio are very in character, and I especially enjoy Horatio's lacking social skills. ( An excerpt )The Gentlemanly Art of Conversation

Fandom: X-FILES Pairing: Mulder/Everybody Author on LJ: Not that I know of Author Website: `Wombat's FanfictionWhy this must be read:Everybody likes a hurting Mulder. In fact there used to be a whole archive devoted to the fact, called, not surprisingly, Muldertorture. And then there's this story which explores the slash aspect of this phenomenon. Fandom: STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE Pairing: Tucker/Reed, Hayes/m Author on LJ: gigitrekAuthor Website: Gigi Sinclair's Slash Emporium Why this must be read: Because Gigi gives everyone's favorite MACO, Major Hayes, a first name. And, not only that, a wonderfully rich backstory, too which Enterprise's writers have neglected to do for us. This fic is set between the episodes "Harbinger" and "Hatchery", and is told from Hayes's POV, with flashbacks to his past, the events in his life that brought him to this mission--his lifetime of being a soldier, and falling in love during unlikely circumstances. Gigi weaves the threads of the past and present together effortlessly as we find out how Hayes and Reed finally come to a sort of understanding. Fandom: STAR WARS: THE PHANTOM MENACE Pairing: various, major pairing Maul/Obi-Wan Why this must be read:Well, I... it.... you.... How do you sum up the Sith Academy? It has single-handedly pulled in a large number of M/O shippers. I know it's where I started with the pairing. It's hysterically funny. It's sweet. It contains 181 stories, not counting the 17 wonderful NC-17 stories, and the 16 stories that are, for one reason or another, non-canon, but still good enough to be hosted at the site. It contains perky!drugged-up!Obi, and lecherous!Qui-Gon, lines like "Let your hate flow through you, wait for a tiny opening in traffic, then pass her illegally and flip her off", and it has something for everyone. Even if you're not feeling the M/O love, a large number of the stories are entirely gen humour. "All right, my new apprentice, this is my apartment. You are not allowed on the couch."
The porcupine waddled across the floor and took a whiz on the leg of the coffee table.
Maul growled and thwacked the spiny mammal on the head with a rolled-up newspaper. The porcupine puffed up aggressively, spines sticking out in all directions.
"Ah, good my young apprentice. Use your hatred and strike out at me."
The porcupine didn't move.
"Strike out at me."
The porcupine continued to not move.
"Feel your hate! Strike out at me in anger! Use the power of the Dark Side and strike me down!" Maul frothed maniacally.
The porcupine curled up in a ball and started to shiver.
With a sigh, Maul realized that this might take a while. If you're not up to reading the whole thing, I will probably, when I run out of ideas for other recs later in the month, be reccing a few stories by themselves. I feel guilty about cheating like this, but there is at least one that I think really must be singled out, and a couple of others that I would like to. That all said: Welcome to the Sith Academy

Fandom: BLAKES 7 Pairing: None Author on LJ: Unknown Author Website: Unknown Why this must be read: This is categorised on the Hermit Library as Hurt/Comfort, Angst, but I'd disagree with the former (since much of the hurt occurs before the story), and possibly the latter too. There's definitely enough action/adventure in it to keep me reading. Set two years after the series' end, it begins with Avon and Vila meeting on a prison ship. Vila has gone back to thieving and Avon has been held prisoner by the Federation ever since Gauda Prime. All common features of a PGP. The Avon-Vila relationship in this reminds me of a Robert Holmes script, and there are references to his episodes scattered through the narrative. Of course, as is common with PGPs they rejoin the rebellion, but it's not initially Avon that the rebels are after. There are some original characters amongst both rebels and Federation, but also canon characters on both sides to keep everyone happy, and there are some delightful snippets of characterisation in there. Fandom: FARSCAPE Pairing: John/DK Author on LJ: whitelight1Author Website: none Why this must be read: Audacious and deft, this story grew out of a "five things that never happened" scenario. While the characterization is argueably beyond the pale of canon, the relationship between John and DK is compelling and presented so skillfully that it catches the reader up. Even one, like myself, who has an irrational dislike of DK. I re-read fic very rarely, and this is one of the select favorites I've come back to enjoy repeatedly. Empty Pools

Fandom: BABYLON 5 Pairing: Londo/G'Kar Author on LJ: kakodaimon, fic LJ at pausaniasAuthor Website: pausaniasWhy this must be read: Curse Kakodaimon's sudden but inevitable talent! She's also got a very touching Londo/Vir ( The Third Way), and an appropriately funny Londo/G'Kar ( Vision), but I'm reccing "Safety in Numbers" because it does a damned fine job answering the age-old question of how our favorite Centauri and Narn might react the morning after. It's solid, desperate and sexy at once, and pays as much attention to the historical relationship between Narns and Centauri during the war as it does to Londo and G'Kar's semi-enlightened, semi-heartbreaking love affair. Londo’s lungs worked on a second laugh, disbelieving. "Hero! I find that somewhat out of character. Hero?"
"Rest assured, Mollari, it was the heat of the moment. Don’t flatter yourself by giving it a second thought."
"Hero. Great Maker. You, my friend, are slipping."
Then they lay back, each smiling and content, each silently cursing themselves and each other for being such unforgivably good diplomats.Safety in Numbers

Fandom: THE O.C. Pairing: Seth/Ryan Author on LJ: torchthisnowAuthor Website: http://splinter-moment.net/molly/Why this must be read: One of the best things about reading The O.C. fic is that authors tend to bring the Funny when writing Seth Cohen. This story is no different, and features a pitch-perfect Seth voice. There are numerous laugh-out-loud moments as Seth fears that Murphy's Law will strike when his high school English class studies his favorite subject, the Beat poets. Ryan is tolerantly amused when Seth fortells his approaching doom, but when disaster does strike (in the form of a pedantic, poser substitute teacher), Ryan definitely has Seth's back. The light make-out session in the school's supply closet provides a supremely satisfying ending to the story. It's the little details that make this story so great: Seth's knowledge of Beat poets and comics lore, Summer's acidic observations as she polishes her nails in English class, and Ryan's stalwart support of Seth and his obvious affection for his adorably geeky friend. All in all, a very fun read. War Profit
