Total Grilling Experience by Ellen M. (PG)
Fandom: The West Wing
Pairing: CJ/Toby
Author on LJ:
quasiradiant
Author Website: quasiradiance
Why this must be read:
In Total Grilling Experience, Josh insists he knows how to barbecue, and Sam swears CJ and Toby are having sex while he, Josh and Donna are grocery-shopping. Continued in Cuando tu Conoces, in which we find out what, exactly, CJ and Toby were doing while the others were at the store, and concluded in Playful Banter and Lively Foreplay, in which everybody gets back together and Sam is proved right.
Ellen has a lovely, lyrical touch with prose and a good handle on the CJ/Toby dynamic, her dialogue sparkles without descending into rote Sorkinese, and her CJ is utterly fabulous. In addition to handling the CJ/Toby, we get excellent Josh-Sam-Donna banter; they sound like best old friends or siblings, totally aware of each other’s strengths, weaknesses and rhythms, sliding into the banter like it’s a favorite pair of well-worn jeans.
A quote:
"I mean, I just wish for the days when I looked like an Abercrombie model. I'm getting old here."
Donna lifted her head. She was lying stomach-down in the grass, her shirt pulled up to bare her back to he sun. "Oh, God, Sam. Can you hear that?"
"What?" Sam asked, tilting his head to listen.
"It's the world's smallest violin playing the world's saddest song," she smirked and let her head fall back onto her folded arms.
"Very funny," Sam frowned. "Very funny. Don't hate me because I'm beautiful, okay?"
"And what if I do, Sam?" she asked. "What if I detest you for the fact that you're so, so..."
"I think the word you're searching for is 'full of shit,' there, Donna," Josh said.
Donna burst into laughter, hiding her face.
Sam shrugged and sat up, his legs stretched out in front of him. "That's three words."
"Not if you use hyphens," Donna said.
"Thank you for pointing that out for us, Donna. You're a real pal," Sam said as he threw a handful of grass at her.
